Queens Birthday is on 2/06/08 which means a long weekend, therefore the idea is to do a 250cc three day tour to the West Cape (if you can call it that). Leaving Saturday Morning from Auckland, and coming back to auckland on Monday Night.
This tour is aimed mainly at people riding 250cc bikes. People riding larger motorcycles are more than welcome to attend but bear in mind that the main group speed is going to be 100 - 110k, so you may get bored. Everyone is wellcome to ride the speed they are comfourtable with (faster than us 250cc if you like). To attend this event you must be comfourtable with open road riding, which means that if its going to be your first time on open road then this ride is not for you.
Day 1:

I can't see the bit that mentions sleeping in the wilderness with tents :)
I was thinking about that but I'd much prefer a nice comfy bed. If you are keen on a tent you can bring one and can sleep on the lawn or on the beach. fine by me.

Taken it into account. Surely turangi doesn't have just one place for sleep. Then there is Toupo, Ohakune, Tauramanui, Waiouru...etc. :niceone:

There is another road that goes around Mt Egmont a bit higher up the mountain, it's got lots of twisty tar seal, and is very scenic. The road up the mountain to North Egmont is also worth a look.

Uh, I've never used google maps, so I can't figure out how to do that right now. From Maptoaster: Egmont Rd intersects SH3 at Egmont village. It goes straight up the North side of the mountain to North egmont. Nice twisty road and (I imagine) good views from the top, if you aren't stuck in a cloud (as we were).
Back on SH3 going towards New Plymouth you do a bit of a dog leg through Mangorei Rd and Baker Rd to get onto Carrington Rd, which skirts around the edge of the mountain. We went as far as Parihaka Rd and followed it down to the main highway and the lighthouse.
You guys are just touring too much!
Just wait and see.. I'll do what none of all you guys can! Just wait and see!

Thanks Rosie. Found it on the map. If we have enough time we will do it - looks like a nice road. I'm only concerned about ice on the road as it climbs up to the mountain. Thanks alot.
If someone wants to read about the Cape egmont lighthouse you can read some interesting stuff here. (http://www.pukeariki.com/en/stories/transport/capeegmontlighthouse.htm)

I think that would be cool, to meet up with all the other KBers. I think originally Toto was thinking whether to just join the Bust-a-gut gathering instead of having our own tour, but in the end, being on 250s, decided to have our own tour. This way, we can do both!

bear in mund falks that if you decide to go with the tent option you cant come and cry to me if you freeze your ass off. I need to give definite numbers 1 week before the tour so make up your minds and let me know. Whatever you decide - 5 days before the trip everything goes concrete.

What about going swimming with sharks in kelli Taltons if the weather is crap. You can go into the tank and feed the sharks. Thats what I call fun

The road North from the Raglan Road to Waingaro is metal for most of it. If you want to avoid the metal head North from the garage at Whatawhata and then hang a leftie at Ngarawahia. The road out to Waingaro hot springs is nice. The rest of the road north is a joy even with a few bumpy bits. At Pukekawa as you approach the bridge there is a sweeping left hander going downhill with the worst bump. Chucked my hands right off the bars. Felt like I had run over a curb.

Thanks for the heads up. we did 40km metal on cape reinga tour and about the same on east cape tour so surely 1 km of gravel aint gonna be a problem. About SH22 - YEa. we will be taking it extra easy on that one. no bins needed. Thanks agiain brother.

There's about 18kms of gravel and it was really loose horrible stuff when I last went on it. The km or 2 before the gravel was really good. Right, left, right flicks; peg scraping smooth. The alternate route, the road out through Glen Massey from Ngaruawahia is highly recommended - really nice. That's the way I'll be going.
Heads up wasn't about SH22. That only goes as far as Pukekohe from the Drury motorway interchange. That roads in really good nick. The bit around Pukekawa is great except for that one bump. From memory it is just after you first see the bridge at Tuakau about a km away. A big left hander heading down from the top of the ridge. Went right across the North bound lane. We all missed seeing it and so was a bit of a shock.
.... That's the way I'll be going....
Are you coming with us ? If so you havent signed yourself on the calender event....

Bike: My poor baby is dead I'm affraid. Low sided it on the right side. Right birror, right brake lever right indicator missing. Right hand side fairing scratched and bent. Front fairing broken up. Bike not starting. Exhaust scratched. My baby has seen better days. I'm hoping to go bike shopping soon - already looking on trademe. I'm happy I have full insurance cover.
THE TOUR: All is organised for you guys. You know the route, the places with accomodation, etc...so whoever wants to lead the tour you have my blessing. Hope you guys still have great time.

Thanks for another great weekend guys. The Forgotten World Highway is the best but dodgiest piece of road I have ever been on!
The cops were out in force today - saw 7 highway cars and two speed camera vans. Unfortunately, my great timing from Turangi to Akl was tarnished with my first speed ticket in 6 years. Bloody 37kph over... OUCH!
Bugger man! how long did it take you to get back?
1271km I need to make up in very near future :D
It's a real shame you couldn't have come man. That was by far the easiest lighthouse to get to... ever. Only 5m of gravel!
Great to meet up - next year join in!
Might have to! Thanks for posting the pic too

You mean 50m? Or closer to 100m actually...
It seemed like the least visited lighthouse too, there isn't even a car park or anything leading up to the lighthouse like there is at Cape Reinga, and at East Cape quite a few cars were on the gravel road leading to the lighthouse (or as close as we could get to it). Here? Just a mossy road and that's it.
next time we go that way I'm thinking climbing the Mount egmont too. you guys keen ?
