Ok, so as many of you know now I was in a BAD accident about 11 days ago. http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=73213

Injuries include:

broken jaw
broken nose (more like shattered into dust really but rebuilt with metal plate)
partially severed tongue
2 missing teeth and 2 teeth broken in half.
broken face (shattered most of my face including eye orbits, cheeck bones, upper jaw and upper sinus cavities)
huge gash in my face running from my forehead down between my eyes and ending at my upper lip just to the right of my nose.....

Shoei Tempest TZ-r TC-1: didnt work so well as all my injuries were neck and above. Face shield came off right when my head hit the ground and just before my face impacted a street sign and did all the damage. Face shield was locked down too. If it had held up as it should have......I'd have prolly walked away from the accident with nothing but a very sore neck and a bruised hip. On the plus side for the Shoei it did save my life.....but I honestly think that ANY of the top helmets from HJC, Arai, Nolan, Shark, etc would have performed just as well in that regard. What Im less sure of is if these other brands face shields have better attachment systems that wouldnt have failed so badly in my accident.

Jacket
Fieldsheer "Corsair" jacket. This was the second Fieldsheer jacket I've owned, the first being a "Tour Temp" which I also liked. "Corsair" jacket was VERY good to me. Comfortable as all hell, came with a removable liner, CE armor with back protector, and it was cool in the summer. Not as good in the winter as my "Tour Tempt" due to the collar design directing freezing air right down my neck but this same "flaw" was a godsend in the summer when its a million degrees outside. The "Corsair" held up perfectly in the accident. Not a scratch on my upper body despite sliding a long way on road, through mud, rocks and debris, and accross a grassy field. Not only did the thing function superbly in terms of protecting me but it doesnt look so bad even after taking that beating. The most noticable "damage" to the jacket is the fact that the entire front of it looks like its been soaked in a vat of blood.....which came from my face. So overal I give this jacket a 5 out of 5. As long as the blood comes out, I'll wear it again. I really dont care about blood but, really, its an insane amount of blood Im talking about. It would scare people if I wore it heheheh.

Gloves
Gloves were Joe Rocket "Speedmaster 6.0" and they worked exactly as I would have wanted. I low sided and my hands hit first. My head, hands and arms took the brunt of the intitial impact (and it was a hard impact let me tell you) and the gloves had my entire body weight (182 lbs.) sliding on them accross road, gravel, rock, debris, and sand for a LONG slide. As was the case with my jacket. Im planning to use these very same gloves again. Only significant damage besided scuffing is that they look like they've been thrown into a lake of blood for a week. No damage to my hands at all. Not even a sprained finger which is simply amazing. Also they are VERY comfirtable in general and fit perfectly. Icing in the cake is that they look hot as shit too when matched to a black jacket hehehe. 5 out of 5.

pants

Pants were Alpinestars "Stella" track leathers. These held up great. They were scratched up pretty good but they did thier job as advertised. I've got some bruising over my left hip and some soreness there as well but other then that Im prefectly fine. No road rash and no borken bones. In general I'd say they arnt the best for summer. Way to hot and not enough ventilation. Personally, Im looking for some nice kevlar lines jeans for the daily comute in the future and full leathers for the Tuesday rides and track days. 4.5 out of 5 for the pants....losing points for not looking like new after the accident like my jacket was kind enough to do. They also lose points for not being so obviously cool that the EMT's were afraid to hurt them. They had me take off my jacket because they didnt want to cut through such an expensive and cool looking bit of kit. Not so my Alpinestar leather pants. They cut them right off me in the ambulance....thats $350 (on sale no less) worth of pants!!!!! Bastards. Clearly Alpinestars needs to work on making thier pants LOOK more expensive so as to avoid this sort of thing in the future.

Boots

Boots were Alpinestars "Stella SM-X 4" racing boots. They sustained some damage as well and, unlike my jacket and my gloves, they LOOK like they've been in an accident (not just blood all over 'em but scuffing too). No damage to my feet at all though. Not so much as a sprained ankle or sore toe and I did tumble at one point as I slid into a ditch and bounced off the lip so I could easily have broken an ankle if not for these boots. Also they STAYED ON MY FEET which is nothing to sneeze at. Everyone knows how often lesser footwear comes right off in an accident and toe's/ankles get broken and ground down into mush. 4.5 out of 5 stars....losing points for not looking like new after the accident hehehe. Hey, I have high standards.

LOL, no pics of my gear taken yet. So far I've only posted pics of my trashed R-6 (in the main thread abou my accident).

I threw away my pants as they cut them off so they are useless. My boots are somehow missing. I had them with me in the hospital and looked them over but somehow during the surgeries and visits to specialists and such they went missing. I have to contact the hospital to see if some nurse or orderly has turned them in. Should have thought of it as they wheeled me out the car on that last day but all I could think about was escaping the hospital!!!!!

I do have my helmet, jacket and gloves and I can take pics of those if you want (still covered in dried blood). As for my face I have pics of that for future use but not to post up on this forum and end up as you fuckers' avatars! haha.

I have TWO Shoei helmets (which fit-wise are better than any Arai I have tried on) and am thus REALLY keen to see if you've followed up with Shoei at all, and to see pictures of the helmet.

Given you are in the US, land of personal injury litigation, you might have to expressly waive any claim before they'll even talk with you, (their lawyers will be all over that like nappy rash) but it would be interesting to hear their input. What you dont want is them to say "No helmet can protect from any conceivable impact blah blah". and address the question of visor detachment and shell damage.

Are you sure that the impact on the pole was on the helmet, or was it direct to your face, ie. if you hit the pole sliding sideways the first point of contact might have been your nose? I'm speculating, obviously.

Good luck with the recovery.

That's a really strange crash. It must be the ultimate in bad luck to get the injuries you did (but then again pretty damn good luck to be able to post about it).

When I came off my helmet took the brunt of my fall on to the road. The chin bar was cracked, the right side was flattened, and the visor was almost gouged through, but I had no head injuries other than concussion. (I still wear HJCs).

I'm glad to hear that you are healing so well.

UK bike mag superbike (superbike.co.uk) runs a monthy feature called 'through the grinder'.

Bad taste, to say the least, but....

If you send them in a photo and a wee description of your off and your damage, and if they use it in the mag, they'll send you a free new back protector.

Why? :blip:

Of course I would never do that, bad taste and all that stuff, mind you a pic of a munted helmet would be a cool avatar...promote ATGATT my favourite rant

Heal well FkNAmerican. Bike riding can be hazardous to life sometimes.

How does insurance over there work as regards to payment for treatment etc? Does your health insurance pay for treatment, or do they have to sue the street sign for compensation? Do you have to pay?

I am Canadian eh? :2thumbsup

Just curiously... What kinda clothing did you have underneath your leathers? Apparently wearings a few layers makes a big difference too.

dude heal up well, it was a real funny read, (probably a bit funnier than the crash itself):)

You'll probably find that your pants are so scratched up as usually when you low side you tend to go sliding down the road on your arse.

Lots of people wear just jeans and a leather jacket, but in reality you're better off to wear leather pants and just a t shirt!

The helmet visor thing puzzles me.

How did the sign post get past the chin guard is what I can't figure. Clearly your face and bone structure took an incredible whack but it sounds as if the chin guard disappeared along with the visor. Had the visor only gone then it just sounds incredibly bad luck that the road sign got itself inside your helmet to beat your face up.

Do you have any rrecollection or knowledge of that part of the crash?

because I slid on my side facing forward exactly into the street sign. So it basically fit right in the gap created when my visor popped off. Trust me, if it werent for the full face helmet the street sign would have taken off my head from the jaw up.........basically the side of the helmet kept the post from going all the way through my head.

The helmet was not damaged much because my FACE too the impact. Go figure. But yeah, the docs were surprised I had on a full face helmet because of the extent of my head injuries.......bad luck I guess.......but I still feel damn lucky as I came within an inch of breaking my neck. For awhile they thought I had a broken neck so I know what it feels like to deal with the thought of being paralyzed for life. NOT GOOD.

I posted pics of my gear in the main thread by the way:

My mate is the accessories manager in 1 of australias largest chain of shops and just last week he was telling me that even the best helmets will only protect your face on an exact square on front impact of up to 10kph! you seldom ever hit square on as its on a slight angle or something but that .01% of the time its gonna hurt....
