View Full Version : What bike for nowhere-land?

I've discovered a new passion; Traveling the most pointless, pothole strewn, cowshit covered back country roads I can find.I don't use a map I just keep riding till I get to somewhere that resembles civilisation and make my way home from there. :scooter:
It's really cool,the nice people I meet,the road kill,the scenery,the retarded Banjo players.Oh no that was a film I watched.
Anyway,I've got a GSX1400 and it's brill on the distance stuff and the long sweepers, wont be giving that up anytime soon but if I'm honest it aint a 50kph gravel track and dogcrap road to hell type of beast.
I got room in my garage and some money on my hip but I don't have a clue what bike would be best suited to these wonderful hideous roads.
Cheap and robust is good, with a decent fuel tank.Lightweight because I'm a realist and I will be pulling it out a cows arse before long.semi knoblies I think.
$ 10k ish . What's your ideal bike for the badlands please?:confused:

A plastic maggot up a moo moo's arse, there's a mental image.
Little to no phone reception where this baby's going so I need to be able to kick a few things back into place and ride on. I hardly see another soul out there, except GI Joe going in circles, so no help either.Need lots of petroleum distillate capacity,no fairing.

Yup the two of them was on BMW sponsered bikes and the camera man was on a shitty old Honda, which was the only one to break down, in Mongolia I think. The other two bikes was BMW R 1150 GS Adventure. Check out the website:

I need to get my DVDs off Kev and you should come up for a gander.

DR650?
Stock tank isn't huge, but they are about $9k brand new, so that would give you spare change for a larger tank.

XT600. Or DR650. XT doesn't have huge tank, but it gets about 250K to reserve, probably 300K till empty. DR is probably about the same.
I also recommend air cooled. Radiators is fragile things.
If you don't have to cover 100km or so of seal before finding those nice back roads, then a 400 is even better.

That's right on the money, can you actually buy a bigger tank ? Are they reliable? Big thumpers eh.I'm quite exited now. :msn-wink:

Thanks Ixion, That's the down side,I've got to do 'normal roads' as well to get where I'm going so it's still gotta be decent enough to hold it's own in the real world. :niceone:

Have a look in the Adventure/Dual Purpose forum, there is lots of info about DRs and similar bikes in there, and people who can answer your questions.

Yeah thanks,I've had a wee look but they all seem a bit,I don't know erm mud biased.I'm a roady really,it all seems a bit rocky river beds and engine mods. When I've narrowed the choice down a bit I will of course consult the muddies.

Ahh.. yet another is seduced by the lure of the dirty side of the force...
Since ya got a nice big road bike in the shed, I'd look towards the dirtier end of the big thumpers, the aforementioned DR650 ticks a lot of the boxes: no fairings or radiators to damage, cheap & reliable, not too heavy, enough power to keep ya happy on the normal roads. Good for about 230km to empty on the std tank, several sizes of bigger tank available (order from the US or Oz), 21" front wheel for stability in the gravel, not too tall...
The XT600, XR650L & my KTM 640 Enduro all inhabit a similar niche to the DR but none of em are sold new here anymore.
Cheers
Clint

My GB400 seems to be performing this particular task quite well using cheap nylon road tyres. Cost a wopping $1400 20,000kms or so ago.

'Dog Rooter.'
general consensus amongst KR staffers is that is the most versatile bike on the market.
My XB12X also excels at same - but is 20K

A good used BMW F650 shouldn't cost more than $6,000-8,000.
They're not a bad bike, though like all big singles there is quite a bit of vibration (not enough to be annoying, but definitely enough to notice).
Edit - I really miss the DT175 I learned to ride on. The bike itself was a piece of shit, but it took me to all sorts of amazing places.

Heaps of bikes to chose from..i personally like the XRs..
but read some good rightups on the DR and DRZ..good value for money.
If you got 10k in your kick,,,you will get something pretty good...
BMW 650...Honda Transalp..
Can get a Honda 650r for just over 5K.....Go like stink and good off road,,,need bigger tank and a few minor mods..
keep posting...intrerested to see what you end up with..

You do seem to get a bit of a raw deal here. There are several models on sale that were discontinued ages ago in pom land. :girlfight:

Hey Marty babe, I know of an almost brand new DR 650 that is in Taranaki. Friend of mine bought it just before Christmas and then got transferred to Melbourne in Feb. It's been to Hamilton twice, to Whangamomona once, and around the mountain once apparently. (The speedo is only reading 123ks because they just changed it from miles to K's).
PM me if you are interested and I'll send you the phone number. His missus has told him that when they come back in three years he can buy another one, but that it would really be more sensible to sell it than keep it for that many years without riding it. I offered to look after it for him, but they said nah.
