heya,

prior to getting to NZ, i rode a 250cc vespa (exclusively inner-city) back in NY and similarly, am on a vespa (150cc) here in NZ.

been riding around wellington (almost always inner-city) for a little over a year now (on an american m/c endorsement). in feb, i moved out of the city and felt freaked out at riding at higher speeds/longer distances.

i decided to do my class 6 license from scratch here when my 12 months were up, for safety reasons and to build confidence on "opposite" road riding.

since getting my learner's, i ride 25mins each way daily (wellington city to seatoun near the airport) with 10-15 mins on 70k roads. i also do weekend jaunts to lower/upper hutt (90k motorway limit).

i completed my BH test on march 1st in petone and will be taking my restricted when the time comes (early september).

qn 1. there's a 70k limit on a learner's license - does this actually affect me when i get on the motorway? should i stay left on 70 or just get up to speed?

i have not met any patrol cars on the motorway, but each time i go to the hutt i worry i'll be pulled over for going past 70k with a yellow plastic tag.

qn 2. FOUND ANSWER IN ANOTHER POST!

qn 3. what're the chances of passing both the restricted and full license test without using an instructor? are they recommended? what can i do to ensure i get a tester with a headset?

i would ideally like to pass them on each first try. are there routes/centers that come recommended? should i avoid kilbirnie like some advocate?

qn 4. the new rules that come into effect "later this year", how likely would they be retroactive/affect riders already on restricted license?

thanks in advance!

The new laws will scrap the 70Km limit which was largely ignored anyway. As long as your not doing anything stupid you'll be sweet as.

qn 2. will i be able to take my restricted and full test on my vespa or must i get a "standard" motorcycle? (i did my BH test on a GN provided by assessor)

although i completed my test without issues, i have am not comfortable with the clutch on a "standard" motorcycle, so i hope a vespa is okay! (or CVT burgman/gilera/peugeot)

Piece of piss, head along to a few of the Welly Mentor/Newbie rides and get your confidence up. The actual tests are incredibly easy, they just follow you in normal road use.

There's many Bush-lawyers out there. I wouldn't hazard a guess.

thanks in advance!

Best of luck, maybe one day we'll adopt the free left turn at red lights rule too.
