Hi all, Guess I am the only active n00b in SMC but I thought to make thread like this would be useful.

The purpose of this thread is for those Learner riders in SMC to post when they want to do practice in car parks with senior members of SMC.

For places to practice refer: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=54559

So, what you think guys? Is it gonna be useful at all?????

Ok, so heres first L-plate rider's request....
Anyone free after 1pm on this Saturday?

im happy to help if you guys need me

i can personally tell ya that three kings is a shite place to practice....if you have come that far, you may as well go a lil bit further down the road to cameron pools parking lot.....generally empty on sundays and has a massive flat area

have you heard about the wednesday night rides? they tend to go practice up in the albany megacentre's massive car parks with empty roads and roundabouts too

try to find somewhere with few cars to dent/annoy. maybe try some netball courts or something like that? (there was/is some good, big ones at my old high school that were empty most weekends)

what are the airport carparks like? last time i was there there was a few big empty areas

then there's subdivisions that are yet to have their immaculate roads opened. just squeeze/push past the barriers and there's a mini neighbourhood to go roving WITHOUT all the mums doing shcool runs in huge 4WDs ripping up the perfect surface and trucks dumping diesel everywhere

Flick me a PM next time you guys and (esp) gals head up there, i'd be keen!

There is an RC car track in Albany which would be great fun on a pocket-bike - we've used it on AWNMR a few times, is certainly fun trying to get a ZX11 around a hairpin designed for 3" long toys!

Think gates get locked at night, not sure about weekends.

As long as gates open you can get to the track. you may be able to get a bike through somewhere but whole place under camera surveillance and security guards patrol. Doubt they would mind, prob give the guys watching the monitors a giggle watching bikes go around it... assuming you behave yourselves I doubt they would kick up a fuss.

Hey dude, awesome to see you keen to get riding as much and as often as possible, that's what it's all about! Have you hit the open road or motorway at all yet? Me and Shaun kinda wanna go for a blast on Friday as opposed to a slower paced ride (not that I'd say I go too fast anyway haha).

Um a thought though is if anyone else is keen to come and are learners or keen for learner pace, then we would be keen to have everyone along with maybe a slower group and a faster group but still stick together overall, usually works out that way anyway!

Pretty much we'd hate to leave you behind. So it'd be cool as if ya know anyone who'd be keen to do their first open road with ya too? I don't mind leading at a slower pace at all, but as long as it's fine to head off in front maybe too for a bit. Lol now I feel like a dick hijacking your thread haha!

So :

This Friday 23rd May, time will be weather dependant but prob aim about 10am-11am, head out west to do SH16 maybe Woodcocks rd too. Back in time for the chiller at Strata. Calling ALL people who just wanna get some open riding done. Not a "Learner friendly ride" specifically, but various levels are all welcome in terms of splitting the group up maybe. Sound like fun to anyone?

Sounds ok Banzai?
:Punk::woohoo:

the testing station near the old council building is nice and large and empty most afternoons (drug dealers/stoners generally clear out when you turn up with more than one car, and security would prefer a pocket rocket to a drug dealer. seriously speaking from experience here)

Maybe not an open road. I don't really know Auckland Roads so somewhere suitable for learners...

i love the assumed plurality of learners when actually i believe he means...me and him. (feel free to correct me though. we may have a few nifty 250s learning to ride)

not to mention the cohort of senior riders he intends to escort the imagined gaggle of L-plate learners across the coro-loop.

giggles aside, i would be thrilled to go for another ride. :)

how are your tight u-turns banzai? i would like to practice those in a safe area where Friends and Riders alike can throw themselves to the ground to protect my fairings in the event of a slow-speed dump.

absolutely the most fun a person can have simultaneously shitting themselves as one rapidly approaches a head-on with a van.

so no, not a good idea. but if i were sensible i would have bought a scooter like my BHS instructor told me to. ("because then you can ride in heels, dear")

mm i looked them up but there are no standard crash bungs available for my particular bike so they have to be custom made.

bit beyond my means at the moment given i don't even own riding pants & currently bind the machine physically to my house disguised as a pile of rubbish in the absence of a suitable shed.

The SMC RRRS day is booked out atm, they do have courses on every 3rd Sunday of the month though. Yes, it is aimed at people who have had some experience riding already but having said that I did it in May or so last year having had my bike 4 - 5 months (and for a good 4 weeks of that it was in the shop out of order) and found it REALLY useful, was able to put the skills to use right away.

So do look at it , and DO practice more low speed cornering etc before going near coro and tight corners and road works etc!

Alright then I think the priority now is beefing up the security of your bike. Do you need help in finding security locks for your bike? Looking at your bike fairings I think you gonna have to drill a hole to mount the frame sliders....

Only thing I ever replaced was tires and one indicator haha, I dropped my bike at speed twice, and five times almost stationary learning to take it off road. Cos of that crack now I do want to know who you are...also cracks about my departed two stroke go only so far, she was a great bike and no one except people I know well can make fun of her without me getting slightly ticked off. So crack away matey but not about betty, cos then I will get annoyed, and then when I meet you on friday if you come to the chiller I'll just think your a dick. Have we met before too, cos dushy bashing is only for people who know dushy I reckon. Robbo I know as well as everyone else so they can say whatever they want and I'll have a laugh about it but you, na you can't me thinks. Nuff said.

Edit: actually you also made a crack about my new bike too which you've probably never even seen, so now I do think your a dick and if you do come to the chiller and say anything about my bike I shall get ticked off, words shall be exchanged my friend. Warning sent.

There is an RC car track in Albany which would be great fun on a pocket-bike - we've used it on AWNMR a few times, is certainly fun trying to get a ZX11 around a hairpin designed for 3" long toys!

Here's the track...

I'm going away on Coro day but my exam should be finished by week before so free JUN30-JUL5.

Say JUN30 and if weather is bad we can postpoun it to next day, if weather is bad on that day, next day, and next day...

Also, Sophie is coming over on Sunday to do some practice, we might do some more cones courses in the pm (I need to practice u turns for my full test!!), txt/ pm if any1 is keen 2 join

Hmm MONDAY EXAM, hmmm hmm........

I think that is a very good idea. I am itching for a ride, but can't spare a whole day for Coro loop and $$$$ for gas. Haven't been out Huia way for ages, so that will be a nice change. Does full licence make me "senior"? Bah, I'm older than all of you anyway.

Yep:yes: You can lead us or chase us from behind

After reading the manual and looking at the cbr forums, I don't THINK my bike has one. There's been a little talk about releasing any trapped air by running the bike with the radiator cap or something, so yeah I assume it doesn't have one :woohoo:

Macstar
6th June 2008, 23:40
Sweetas. You're spose to do a radiator flush annually. Apparently, coolant can become positively charged after awhile making your radiator act like a big battery? If that sounds too far fetched, crappy radiator coolant corodes your hoses and engine...

Ragingrob
6th June 2008, 23:45
Haha yeah, well if I cruise into town from Karaka the temp sits down the cold side of things. Hop off the motorway, sitting at lights for 2mins and it'll be up around 3/4 or higher! So I'm gonna see if new coolant and a nice flushing will help that.

as for a huia ride, i'm keen - but be warned of two things:

rain in the city does not mean rain in the ranges and vice versa, so weather news will need to come from a local like phurrball
rain on huia road makes it dangerous even for an experienced rider; that road is covered with tar snakes in all sorts of dodgy places, so i suggest cancellng if it's raining

more like 40-50kph, depending on tyre pressure, balls (or just plain stupidity) of rider, air temp, road surface, 2 stroke mix ratio, the "mood" of the bike, and wind speed/direction:laugh:

how big are the wheels? at that speed a slight bump or stone would send your car flying...

It's only an 1/18th scale so the wheels are pretty small.

I've hit a few nasty bumps that have sent it cartwheeling for quite a distance, but it's a pretty tough little car some i'm yet to break anything.

The biggest issue when it gets to those sorts of speed is the lack of downforce. The chassis is a flat piece of plastic which turns into a rather effective wing at high speeds and can cause the car to take off.

So far i've only had the front end lift up because of that, but i'm sure with a bit more speed it would start to fly.

I had to visit my friend in Botany today and when I was leaving the rain wasnt hard so I decided to go with GN.

Then on motorway it started to rain really badly...

At the exit of motorway to Pakuranga, there was road patches in left courner to Pakuranga highway and it cought the wheel or something and slipped a little bit.

It was just a little bit so I stayed on road safe but was very scary!

Then on the way back it was raining badly too!!!!

And I just couldnt shut my visor. On the way to Botany I can shut my visor but still can see, but at night theres no way I can see with visor on in that rain.

My jacket was fine except wrists bit and gloves are soaked and over pants is soaked too! Jeans was ok but got moist.

I need proper riding pants!!!

Overall it was good experience...

It was crazy to see that guy in Gixxer (two eyed one, not really sure which one but I saw suzuki mark) was riding pretty fast in rain... He over took me and over took cars in the heavy rain and kept going!!

Hmmm -

I got to work on Monday just before 7am. It wasn't raining then.

That changed...it rained...a lot.

My work roof leaked.

I viewed home time with the trepidation of someone that knows their dry, comfy crotch won't last.

My trusty Placemakers el-cheapo throw over waterproofs were pretty good - except the pants are not designed for on a bike = too short when sitting on seat!

(If anyone wants any let me know - they seem at least as good as most 'budget' bike throwovers, and cost 1/4 as much. Pants OK with proper bike boots, but too short for anything else. Sizes L-XXL fit over bulky gear OK - good to have under the seat or at the bottom of your backpack if you're not sure what the weather will bring)

I knew I was going to get wet, so I wrapped my un-nuggetted steel cap work boots in this small cling wrap we use for bundles of timber - much the the amusement of my colleagues. It worked pretty well, except where it rode up on my gear change foot. I was pretty happy with how dry I was after 25km in the hosing rain. It took my high-vis 2 days to dry though...

At least heavy rain washes the crap off the road and offers predictable levels of grip, unlike showers that just float the diesel and oil to the surface!

I always feel real solidarity with other riders I see in the heavy rain.

*I cheated yesterday and took the car on my mission. The gas bill will punish me*

You'll never do the coro in 6 hours, not even a half coro, taking the perfectly straight roads (SH2) to get to thames and back is 230k....

If I have a new bike by this ride guys, I may be keen to come along with you guys in order to get used to the bike at a slower pace as opposed to trying the Coro loop with the others for my first ride on a new bike! We'll see...

You should ride back through the Hunua's. Great piece of road and way less boring than SH1.
