I bumped in to a ex-GP racer (from the 70's) who lives in ChCh 6mths of the year who has had a bit to do with Gobert. He told me and my friend a sad tale of a great racer who now was involved in some very bad shit and had squandered every chance given to him.

I've met Gobert a few times, and he's a total tosser. Talented beyound imagination, but a tosser no less.

Very sad that such a talented rider could have fallen so far. I'm sure everybody gets down on their luck at times, but robbing the elderly of forty bucks?

Fuck, he really is down on his luck..........

The mans an idiot and is now exactly where he deserves to be...........in the gutter. There's nobody to blame for his situation other than him.

Thanks for that clip - just a reminder, really, of what could have been........

I posted this to the WERA forum today, no point in writing twice:

Apparently his brothers want/have nothing to do with him. It sounds like his Mum is his only supporter, but she must be at the end of her rope.
I worry a bit on another note - my quite elderly, though far from feeble, parents go to Surfer's for the NZ winter. Scum like this preying on the elderly makes my blood boil. I don't care who Anthony Gobert once was, he's a cowardly petty thief who won't do anything to help himself to get free of the shackles of addiction. He should be locked up and kept away from my Mum and Dad - and everyone else's Mum and Dad.
Such a waste of an incredible talent.

Cheers
Barry

unfortunatly for some adreniline junkies..they can't help themselves..always looking for the next fix..no matter what form its in!

The stink think is..he'll hurt alot more people..and turn a hell of alot more people against himself before he will maybe sort his shit out..if he does at all.
But he is by no means a isolated case of a substance abuser..and there will be far far more out there..worse case's than him by far..its just that he is/was in the public eye..so we hear about it. which in someways might not be a bad thing if he publicly humiliated..mite make him do something about it!

Such a waste. Still, maybe a smackhead racing series would be an idea. Great entertainment and if they kill themselves there'll be one less thieving skum on planet earth.

He road raced at Manfield on a zx-6 about 6 yrs ago - he was f.fast for someone who was `just trying' out road racing. I think he won the meeting between all the top NZ riders and the aussies that came over.

Bit of a waste I guess and not good when the crime(s) commited hurt innocent victims.
But...... they are motorbike racers right? What happened to the rock'n'roll lifestyle if given the chance and no-one gets (badly) hurt. Most corporate sport is totally devoid of colour or characters - Think golf - the only actual character that sports had in the last decade has been John Daly. Boring.
Do we want a sanitized corporate sport where riders say or do nothing outrageous or funny? What happened to sex drugs and rock'n'roll? Bring it back.
But maybe hold the kiddie porn.

Where the fuck are you coming from with your angle? :2guns: Ashkenazi?? I'll go for 'boring'

Copied and pasted:
Kim Ashkenazi, 31, jailed for six and a half years at Reading Crown Court on March 17, for possession with intent to supply. He was found with Cocaine with a street value of between £20,000 and £25,000 following his arrest in September 2005.

On 28 April, also at Reading Crown Court, Ashkenazi received an additional sentence of nine months imprisonment, to run consecutively, for possession of indecent images of children. He was also placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for 10 years.

Ashkenazi was arrested as part of Operation Harp, which investigates the use of payment cards for accessing web sites known to contain indecent child images. Thames Valley Police executed a warrant at his address in September 2004, where they seized computers which were found to contain hundreds of indecent images of children. During the search, ecstasy tablets, amphetamines and cannabis were also seized. Ashkenazi later pleaded guilty to possession of half a kilo of cocaine with intent to supply while on bail for the above offences.

Once you are too old to race MX competitively anymore (approx 25yo) you have 3 choices:

1 Coach (Oh god – most of the coaches I’ve seen can ride:love:, CAN’T teach:angry:. “Arr sorta do it a bit more, arr, like, err, like, more”)
2 Race Cars (provided you made enough $ while you were MXing:first:)
3 Deal drugs and kiddy porn:shutup:.

Agree on the current crop being pretty bland, all most PC, but the alternative can be carried to extremes, no? Somewhere in the middle is manageable. Mr. Rossi comes to mind

:jerry:Yeah, Rossi seems to have it about right. Plenty of emotion, personality and antics. Gracious in defeat. No hint of substance abuse, publicly.

You have your supremely talanted road racers that win races at a world championship level (including Gobert, now a useless smackhead). The next level are the Championship winners. To be a great rider you must win a number of world championships. And the greatest road racer of all time has won the premier class world championship on 2 and 4 stroke bikes as well as leaving a winning team for another, and winning with them too (sorry Mick Doohan).

Weird shit.

My kids used to watch a NZ show called THE GO SHOW - its for the wee ones - still on mornings and Saturday.

About the show:

Hosted by Okotai Okotai, Jodie Bate and Catherine Sylvester, The Go Show aims to help young children make good life choices by actively promoting thinking.

Okotai, Jodie and Catherine will also encourage children to participate in various songs and dances. Each week has a theme.

Okotai, Jodie and Catherine will present their own original stories using live music, dance and song. New Zealand children will also share their own stories.

The hosts will suggest different activities to do after the television is turned off. The activities encourage problem solving and thinking skills and will help to keep the children entertained for hours.

Joining Okotai, Jodie and Catherine is George, an animated character, who has to make choices every day. Then there's Billy, Jay and Fizz; three pre-school puppet characters. The three are larger than life kindergarten kids who get through each day with a sizeable slice of humour while offering ideas of how to tackle age appropriate issues.

WTF - The worlds greatest thinkers had miserable lives. These shows promote good (= happy, apparantly) lives through NORMALIZATION.
