Built one, its just a hollow pipe
It's essentially the same as a cruiser pipe - you just need to make a fitting so it fits onto whatever is there for you to attach it to.
Here's a bike I did up with similar -

That's why I'm thinking of getting an old original exhaust and chopping off the can.... Leaves you with the perfect bracket and nice pipe.
Any problems with back pressure doing this? I guess I can try by taking off my current slip on and going for a run with just the headers and mid pipe?
Is this a good plan or a complete waste of time? And why haven't more people done this??

it will run like a bag of shit unless you get the bike retuned to suit, preferably on a dyno.

It will run fine, you are adding more air flow to the engine.
Get the carbs re-jetted and you will have more horsepower and it will be way loud

The Moto GP style you refer to is getting popular in the USA.
However there is piss all attempt at baffling in them - ie LOUD
see www.compwerkes.com
Hot Bodies is another brand name (good luck with that search!)

BUT I suspect you will not find them for a 99 model as its a new fashion.
Any decent muffler shop will be able to build you one, and it should be pretty reasonable in price as there is piss all to them.
Or as mentioned check trademe for a stock pipe to cut down.
Did I mention it will be LOUD?

Or get yourself a shorty reverse cone muffler - see picture below - these are available for about $99 in NZ. You may need to get a adapter made by a muffler shop but they do come with different adapters to allow for several pipe inlet diameters.
They are only short - 420mm long.
They are baffled but consider them loud - I've heard them on Triumph twins and Guzzis - no missing that they are coming!
They come in chrome only but would look mean baked in satin wrinkle black.
Second thought - get a muffler shop to make a double adapter so you can run two of these (one above the other) - better baffling with two and it will look very special with two sticking out the right side.
