View Full Version : Ride this Friday 23rd May, who's keen?

Well Shingo and I are planning to go for a blat on Friday probably heading SH16 way and see what happens. Timewise we will be looking at about 10am or 11am kinda thing, not too fussed, and will be heading back to Uni in time for the chiller of course. Banzai has raised an interest in joining us so we thought we may aswell extend this ride too all who want to come.

If you haven't been on a ride before, this is the kind that has no pressure whatsoever! Ride at your own pace and in your own time. If there are a few more L-platers it would be great, it's all about learning, and Banzai needs a crew! Also hope that some more experienced guys are keen to join us too, we are thinking of alternating between leading the learner paced riders while the rest can go on ahead. So everyone who wants to can have a blast up front, and also use their experience to ride a bit slower and show the others those brilliant lines you take.

Completely relaxed atmosphere, most of the organisation happens on the day when we know exactly who will be with us etc.

Just shout out in here or PM me if you're keen or have any questions.

Once again - Ride is welcoming ALL riders, if you're just getting into it then it's all about time on the road and learning AT YOUR OWN PACE.

Oh but a P.S. - Must be at least comfortable on the motorway at the right speed, if not comfortable at 100kph on the open road.

Cool :wari:

EDIT : Time has been moved more towards midday to allow some to make it! Leaving uni for Shell Westgate at 12:15 sounds good to me.

Update : So far it's me, Shingo, Rie, Chrislost, Toto, Glice... Sorry if I've left anyone out? If you are coming on this ride or have changed your mind please post up your thoughts so we know exactly and don't leave people behind.

For those who don't know : Meet at Uni 12:15pm in underground carpark, head to Westgate shell, leave Westgate at 1pm, ride around on our scooters :scooter: heading up towards Wellsford, maybe stop for lunch, but we can just talk on the day and what happens happens! Pm me for my mobile number if you'd like.

There is a big variety of skill level coming along, so don't be afraid to put your hand up and say you would love so much to come and will give me an icecream with a cherry on top, because there will be other riders at your skill level :)

Awesome, yeah I'm sure 11:30 would be fine. Oh by the way, I'll be meeting people at Uni somewhere then we can head out and meet any others at Shell Westgate, where we can fuel up and then head off.

From the other thread

Hey dude, awesome to see you keen to get riding as much and as often as possible, that's what it's all about! Have you hit the open road or motorway at all yet? Me and Shaun kinda wanna go for a blast on Friday as opposed to a slower paced ride (not that I'd say I go too fast anyway haha).

Um a thought though is if anyone else is keen to come and are learners or keen for learner pace, then we would be keen to have everyone along with maybe a slower group and a faster group but still stick together overall, usually works out that way anyway!

Pretty much we'd hate to leave you behind. So it'd be cool as if ya know anyone who'd be keen to do their first open road with ya too? I don't mind leading at a slower pace at all, but as long as it's fine to head off in front maybe too for a bit. Lol now I feel like a dick hijacking your thread haha!

So :

This Friday 23rd May, time will be weather dependant but prob aim about 10am-11am, head out west to do SH16 maybe Woodcocks rd too. Back in time for the chiller at Strata. Calling ALL people who just wanna get some open riding done. Not a "Learner friendly ride" specifically, but various levels are all welcome in terms of splitting the group up maybe. Sound like fun to anyone?

Sounds ok Banzai?
:Punk::woohoo:

EDIT : Check out the thread in the smc forum re the ride.

Hey I'm welcome for most ppl to go off topic lol

I've been to motorway 3times (Under 100kmh) but never done openroads.

If we leave at lunch time, when we will be back? I have to be back at about 3pm...

Umm, leaving at 12 we should be able to be back between 3 and 4 I'd say at the latest. What do you reckon Shaun? How long's SH16 take? 3 Hours MAX from Uni yeah?

Yeah I think from Shell it's only say 45mins up and down.

Banzai - If we are running short of time I will be fine to head back down SH1 back into town with you. Whatever suits you. So you just need to be back around 3?

Google maps says 3hours to go from campus up 16 to Wellsford and back down 16 again. If we come back down sh1 instead then we can save 20mins.

Apparently the Ginge and his mates now have LTSA authenticated speedos hooked up to their gearboxes which they use to follow speeding bikers and match their speed (rather than a dedectable radar). Guy was saying 4 bikers were booked this way last week on 16.

You just gotta keep your speed above 200kph - then coppers aren't supposed to be able to pursue you.

Oh cool! If you get some riding done this week around town and on motorway, then you should be ok, the learner pace will be nice and slow. But then again, I haven't seen you ride or really know how much you have ridden. So yeah what's your opinion Squiggles? With a bit more practise and confidence gained during the week too.

I've only been riding 6days from last tuesday. Only went to motorway when goingo back from Squiggle's place to my place twice and once over the Harbour Bridge to goto Cycletreads for tyres (with Bomma's escort and under 80kmh).

Also my GN probly should do 100kmh MAX coz it does need gasket change and at 6500revs engine sounds like its gonna explode lol

At the day Squiggles rode it back to his place from previous owners place. He told me 95kmh is confortable than 100kmh on that.

I reckon it will do you good Yugi if you take it easy for this month.

SH16 is generally a very nice piece of road and I think they patched up that pot hole which took out that R6 last year when we rode up to Whangarei. The ride out to Whitford and Clevedon is also pretty good.

If I had the choice to ride with somebody Stephen would definitely be one my first bets! He's such a responsible young man :msn-wink:

*Sigh* Farking work stocktake on Friday, so won't even be making it to the chilla, let alone a ride. Gutted. Think of me counting nuts, bolts and lengths of dressed timber. *sigh*

I'm all depressed after walking past the bikes on Symonds street and past two nice Firestorms, with Microns and Yoshi RS3s respectively. If this need-for-noise carries on for too long I'll go insane and take an angle grinder to the VTR250's exhaust to release the V-twin music :shifty:

As for the Ginge - he must swap cars a bit:

Last I saw him was in a silver V6 Accord... your impoverished wallets are not safe up that way if you choose to do any more than 110 = Treat any modern V6 car as a possible revenue gatherer or, just cruise at 100-110ish

And Shingo, for the 6R - ride like you imagine the most anally-retentive, risk averse old man would and you'll score 100% - super-beige stuff like flashing the brake lights when you throttle off to slow down, but don't intend braking.

You'll be sweet.

I have been trying to do the brake light flash thing. Good thing is my brakes have a bit of a sponge to start so i can light up the brake light without the brakes grabbing to much.

weather looks shit

plus i've got ridiculous volumes of work piled up, plus exam study as my exams are all within a week of the exam break starting - after 3 weeks of tests and assignments....

i "wasted" the last weekend fitting fairings and riding with banzai on the pocket rocket for a few hours. now i've got to replace a brake light bulb, tighten a peg before it falls off, fit a tank pad thing to stop me scratching paint, get the seats re-leathered, build a computer for a mate, return my brother's new LCD that has a hot pixel, and then there's the four or so tests and an equal number of assignments plus lectures and labs - which they only told us about this afternoon, after i've been booked to work at those times for almost a month now:Pokey:

oh, and i just got an email where yet again the organisers of my design paper changed the specs of the project that my group has already made alot of progress through - now we're back to square one. so far, this has happened to every project they've dished out, as if they want us to leave it till the last minute to save doing it all twice.:angry2:

think my beer consumption this friday will be somewhat higher than normal

harden up!

just think of the mad dash they have to do, completely unprotected, from their carpark to their office in the rain; atleast we have gear on - if it isn't water/windproof maybe you should invest in some that is. a second pair of gloves is a good idea too, especially if you keep them on top of your hot water cylinder

and in the rain we get to practice our drifting:D

atleast the fairings protect you to a degree. naked bikes offer little/no wind protection at all so you get freezing cold - faired biked offer a sheltered air bubble and my one vents hot air all over your legs/under your seat:D (but only on warm sunny days<_<)

atleast the fairings protect you to a degree. naked bikes offer little/no wind protection at all so you get freezing cold - faired biked offer a sheltered air bubble and my one vents hot air all over your legs/under your seat:D (but only on warm sunny days<_<)

Fairings? What Fairings?

I went tutoring to Botany with GN yesterday and was sooo windy!!! My leg was cold coz I don't have boots and can't hide my EDIT: ANK(C)LE with Skinny draggin jeans and type of shoes I was wearing so wind go throught from there...

Other than that my jacket and overpants did good job :D (well, different speed range. I didn't go faster than 70kmh :p)

If it's raining any more than occasional showers then I will give it a miss and get some study done instead. As in persistent drizzle.

But don't let that stop any of you guys from still going for a ride, I'm just the one who has suggested it! But yeah if I don't go on Friday due to rain, then Shingo and I are keen for Sunday arvo as are a few others.

yeah, banzai has not fairings and 250 fairings don't offer too much protection, especially the gpx screen

but if you ride one bike in the freezing cold in jeans, say an fxr150 with next to no protection, then hop onto a big bike with full fairings and double bubble screen for the rest of you journey, you'll have a pretty good "body-temp-ometer" reading to tell the difference!

WELL.......

I think GN can do 100. But then above 6500rpm isn't good for that engine.

On the way back to uni from Haldanes I hit 95 so I'm just saying 95 is ok todo but not sure about how bad its stressing the gaskets.

All good, well if you come you don't have to worry about anything as at least Rie and I will be chillin' with ya, and we(I at least) wont be going much over 100 anyway cause of the cops up that way. As long as you reckon you'll be ok open road doing at least like 95 on the straights, the corners will be nice and slow so doesn't matter how fast she goes then.

oh you know, the usual story of trying to keep up with a nutter sliding both wheels around the hairpins that have gravel on them from driveways, sheer cliffs either side of a very narrow winding road that should be a rally stage, and oncoming traffic also thinking it should be a rally stage that doesn't slow down nor move from their path up the middle of the road meaning you have to slam the brakes, swerve around their bumper into the 1m of road to the side of their car and then lean back over to avoid going into the slight ditch between you and a cliff face.... such a wuss:laugh:

and the best parts of scenic drive are the quarry end without driveways, and i usually go via the backroads of swanson with optional loops down forrest hill road and up mountain rd

Here's a few photos for you to savour....

Hey - that table you're all on is teh table in my avatar - the VTR250 picnic lunch.

So jealous. Too little time to ride ATM. Goddam stocktake  muggins here got stuck with the prepack screws. 450ish prepack product lines to be precise. Then the various masonry anchors. Bad, wrong, and evil waste of a fine riding day...:crybaby:
