Hello there,

What is the best way to replace a clutch push rod oil seal? This is the one that sits on the left hand side of the engine casing. I do not want to split the engine casings. I am pretty sure this is the culprit. Oil is pissing out at a fast rate of knots, covering the rear mud gaurd and is all over the rear tyre.

Where else might an oil leak like this come from? It is high up on the left hand side of the engine as does not drip out when bike parked. It is definitely not the bottom of the cylinders.

The good news is the bike is back together all nice and painted. It has been laid up a while whilst I sorted a new crank shaft and with some help popped it in. Anyway kicked it over, wouldn't start, swopped the ht leads over and it growled into life, amazing. I have got a new wof and reg as well, so road legal now.

Cheers for the help

Will leaving the clutch push rod oil seal in the freezer make it easier to fit?

Any one got any tips on this one?

You will probably hate this post, Surfer... but from memory the seal has an outer lip, which means....
Motu will probably know for sure, with any luck he will chip in here

Yes but surely that's just the side cover, he won't actually have to split the cases...?

I hear people here on KB talking about half-arsing by trimming some of the lip off and jamming seals in from the outside. And that's with stuff like gearbox output shafts which are spinning a lot faster.

Nup, the pushrod goes through the main crankcase.
Depends on how fussy you are... jury rig it or do it properly

There was no lip on the crank case to prevent the clutch push rod oil seal from being pushed in. In the end I got a socket and placed this over it and then tapped it in with a ferkin big hammer. I smeared a bit of yamaha bond around the edges as well.

So far so good. There is still a tiny oil leak which is no where near as bad as before.

Cheers everyone

Cool, great it's worked out for you, Surfer! I'm certain my TX650 had a recess for that seal, but bear in mind the TX was the 256 series engine, not the 447 series your one will be
