Hey guys, the 19th Annual Greymouth motorcycle street race is all go for 2008. A newsletter on changes to classes and grid draws along with other information will be going out to last years entrants within the next few weeks. We have pretty much the same core committee as last year but now have a new organizer. The new organizer is a lady by the name of Debbie Collings. Debbie has been on our committe for several years as the club and race day secretary so she knows how things work and with the commitee's help im sure the event will be better than ever. Debbie takes up a full time position as the Councils events coordinator with her main event being the street race. Her first task will be to send out the news letter. Debbie also intends to set up an information website for riders and spectators but untill that happens then im happy to field any Q&A.s on this thread as i did last year. I will post the newsletter on here for those who wont get one in the mail once it becomes available.

only 5 months to go!!!

cheers, Steve Hyde

Vice President / Club Captain

securing TV coverage is a priority for sure. wheels are already in motion for it. The West coast development trust and the council were stoked at the feedback from the west coast promotion during the ad breaks so its highly likely we will have it again. I just hope some of these young guns, and old guns of course come along and give glen a run for his money this year:niceone: cant have him having it all his way again, especially on nationwide TV.:laugh:

Would love to see you showing the guys down here how White Trash does it! :woohoo:

its always the sunday of labour weekend, It gives competitors the monday to travel home. this year i think is sunday October 26th.
We intend to make changes to the classes this year so that the 600s and Superbikes get a bit more track time. the laps at greymouth are pretty short so we hope to give more bang for ya buck, especially for those who travel.

dangerous - im not sure on the Kings hotel package, once debbie sorts out our new email address (old organizer has rights to old one) i can forward those sort of questions to her. Deb has always sorted the accomodation bookings for riders so will have a good idea of whats on offer this year and may include it in the newsletter.

White Trash - Entrys traditionally go out mid to late august. you should be well looked after - those feral racing boys (Eric and Clint) must owe ya for the hospitality during the nationals. im sure they will show ya how things are done here on the coast.....once banjo practice is over of course.:apint::apint::apint:

RE: CHANGES TO FORMULA 2

As explained in the newsletter we are changing F2 to Formula Greymouth which gives us a bit more flexibility when running this race. The whole idea of the change is to give more track time to F1 and F2 spec bikes as we have received feedback from a lot of riders that Greymouth is just too far to come for 3 races and our spectators are noting an absence of big bikes.
This is purely a trial this year and if we dont get good numbers for this class then we will run a normal F2 this year and look at offering more races to the likes of Post Classics or Motards in the future. so if YOU have a F1 or F2 spec machine then this change has been done to get YOU more track time and hopefully TV time. use it well and have some fun!!!

I realise that we now effectively have a double up or F1 but our last few years entries show that most competitors in F3, post classic and buckets bring 2 machines to get 6 or in some cases 9 races for the day. Most guys with a Superbike or 600cc machine only bring the one bike.

any issues then let me know Steven_hyde74@hotmail.com.

cheers, steve

The more the merrier my friend. Would be good to see ya!! BEARS fill up pretty quick. you could enter BEARS, F1 and FG on the 749. However you could get the ass from one of the three to make room for other riders, as mentioned in the newsletter there will be a chance to indicate your preferred 2 classes. and if entries are low then hey you can go in all 3. All good!!

im not 100% clear on the formula greymouth class... so the thous and 600s race together? also with the current motard situation can the likes of that superduke race against regular street bikes?

steve74
25th June 2008, 20:02
F1 has always been an "open" class here in greymouth as we never get enough 600s or 1000s to run them seperately. The feedback we got from a lot of the big boys was that "Greymouth is too far to go for just 3 short races" Glen Williams showed last year that it is possible to win F1 on our tight circuit on a 600/650. We didnt have enough genuine F2 bikes enter last year so have replaced F2 with Formula Greymouth so we can basically run another 3 races for the superbikes/600s and best of the rest. If we dont see better fields in F1 and FG this year then we will most likely throw extra races to the Supermotards or post classics as they are sometimes over subscribed. Nothing is set in stone untill we see the entrys when they close.

RE: Motards. As part of our MNZ permit requirements we are not permitted to run Supermotard with other classes due to the tight nature of our circuit. So regardless of weather mnz change direction on the current motard situation we still cant run them, this is why we dont have an all in race like nelson has for its king of the port race.

as for SuperDuke etc, We had 2 or 3 enter last year and we allowed them to run with road bikes as the riders tend to ride with a road bike style and they dont take the dirt section jumps too well:clap:.

steve74
8th July 2008, 21:03
yup, the pit area is a bit of an issue with the court house extending into the car park. the whole street between smith city and the regent theatre is always underutilised as its out of the main pit area but should fill up this year.

"Entries must be received by 12 noon Saturday 11 October 2008" - at exactly 12 noon on this day a selected few of us will sit down at a table with the rule book on hand and start sorting everyone into their various classes. The Entry secretary stamps a date on each entry as we recieve them so we can apply the "first in first served" policy. Its quite a process. its not uncommon to be still doing it at 11pm..:crybaby:

The acceptances are put into an envelope as we process the entrys and are posted the next day. - so to answer your question, After october 11.

Just a bit of a "Heads up" , There are a few other major events on in Greymouth over labour weekend this year (reunions, Rugby league club Jubilee). So if you are after accommodation then its probably a good idea to book something asap. Kingsgate hotel are doing a Street race package or contact the Greymouth Isite for accomodation info.

120 riders is our record. We normally have half that amount at this stage, lots of guys have entered 2 bikes or more so positions are filling up.
theres a lot more super sport bikes entered already than we had in total last year so thats awesome. Im impressed with the amount of North islands making the effort too!!!

steve74

we dont noise test unless its obvious that your too bloody loud.

The entry Form is a bit dated and needs a bit of a revamp, a lot of the stuff regarding baffles, type of brakes etc refers to classics which were over 50% of the entries when we first run - 19yrs ago.

Plenty of room in F3 at this stage. I better get my entry in too.:niceone:

We will try and fit all entries in which is why riders can enter as many classes as they are elligable for with the understanding that they may be limited to 2 classes to allow others their 2 classes. Just stops the greedy buggers.

Post classic is Full - already turned people away.

looks like we may just have enough to run seperate S1 and S2 motards too.

Well Well, less than 14 hours left untill the entries shut and unless your on a classic, bucket, motard or in F1 then you might be out of luck.

127 ladies and gentleman entered. - best year ever!! 114 last year

There will be some late ones come in too. As explained in the entry/newsletter, we may throw some of those greedy beggers entered in 4 classes out of a class or 2 to give everyone a good days racing, just dont want to have to turn people away.

just a question for you bucket boys - when was the last time you had your own class???? :eek: - no promises but its looking good.

All will be confirmed by 12pm tomorrow.

Actually buckets have their own class at BEARS winter series, and there is around 30-40 in it these days, weather dependant of course!
It will be a some cool racing to watch, at least I CAN watch... next year I'll be back to race! :Punk:

127 entries, that is BRILLIANT!!

You joining us in buckets Steve? 127+ is great.....and getting stronger each year will only help with the future of the event.

127 is great but provides us with a few headaches. its a nightmare when mnz restrict you to 35 bikes per race and you have 47 post classics and 41 bears enter. it makes for some very unhappy campers!! so you can see why there will be a lot of shuffling around to get guys 2 classes. Next year we might have to just say first in first served and if you miss out too bad. but as i said, i dont want to turn people away.

time will tell!! - its going to be a nightmare.

steve74
12th October 2008, 11:56
every event is different im guessing. there are lots of rules that we are forced to run that dont apply to the likes of Nelson or Burt Munro.

Due to the incredible amount of entries in post classic we are trying to get a dispensation to run 40+ as With 35 in F3, Bears, and Formula greymouth already there is simply nowhere to put the excess.
We have never had this many entries and unless we can run the extra im not sure how we can trim the field down to 35 without pissing some people off.
especially when all the entrys were in on time. Lets just say i didnt get much sleep last night!!

we have tried very hard to give as many competitors 2 classes to race in. If you entered post classic, bears and F3 then chances are depending on your bike you will have been pulled from a class.

We are just going to have to employ a first in first served policy next year or maybe charge for extra classes to limit entries.

I know its tough, but thats life. Gaz.

No qualifying here in greymouth man, the spirit of the event is to give everyone a good days racing, no prize money, no championship, no gold watches, just a trophy for your efforts. Its a low key non championship event at the end of the day.

And a fantastic event it is to, having raced Wanganui I'd say Greymouth beats it hands down for value for money and as a event to race at

thats cool Mr D. no worries. just for your information here are the provisional numbers for the classes

Bears = 35 (full)
F3 = 35 (full)
Buckets = 24 - (spots available)
Classics = 14 - (spots available)
Motard open = 33
Post classic = 41 (over full)
F1 = 24
FG = 35 (full)

All classes will hopefully have 3 rounds but motard will run 4 guaranteed or 5 if time permits.

Lower motard numbers has forced us to combine both S1 and S2 and split the classics/buckets in to their own class.

remember - this is not set in stone yet!!

yes, hats off to the classics and buckets:niceone:, too many of you to race in the one class. we can still take late entries in both classes. it was a hard decission to funnel all the motards into the one class but it did free up some room to split classics and buckets and it was a simple numbers thing. If there were 8 less buckets and 8 more S1 motards then it would have gone the other way. There may be more late motard entries but we had to make a decission on the numbers we had at time of entry closure.

A bit of thought will have to go into next years classes, we started sorting entries saturday lunch time and ive spent all weekend trying to shuffle bikes around to try and keep everyone happy:crazy:.

ive just spent the last few hours making up a race order that will best suit so that guys racing 2 or more bikes dont have to race 3 races in a row. impossible but has to be looked at.

yip thats a tricky one, most bucket guys also race pre82 PC, even one other race inbetween makes a huge differance.

steve74
16th October 2008, 20:38
OK guys, as most of you will be aware , the majority of classes are full to overflowing. We are still turning away people wanting late entries. all we can do is put them on a wait list and let them know if anyone pulls out.

if you are forced to pull out of the event or a class, or you know of someone who will not be riding then please contact Debbie and let her know. With the BEARS meeting last weekend and the final round of SI cup this sunday there may be some drop out. please let us know. There are guys who submitted late entries traveling with their bikes, some from the North island would you believe, who are on the wait list. I simply hate turning people away but with this 35 max grid thing there is no way around it.

room left in buckets, f1 and pre63 still - late fee applys

all good,

steve

A great weekend indeed!

Good ride over Lewis going there.
Awesome racing sunday - sun and cold wind -> no sunscreen -> pain & beer. :sunny:
Great ride back monday going over Westport and Murchison - the beast really enjoyed it and so did I.

Between Glen Williams and Hank Randall the F1 and FG became rather predictable - 1st and 2nd places at least. My hat's off to Glen who entered his SV650 into 3 categories (F1, F3 & FG) and went out and gave it all taking first place in all 9 races.
I enjoyed the supermotards the most since there actually was some real intense competition at the head of the field. The dirt diversion was the place to be where the riders' background became very obvious. Wasn't clear cut if roadracers was better or worse than the motorcrossers - but the roadracers seemed more consistent overall, where the crossers sometimes gained immensely and other times fell over, stalled or in other ways were set back. At the end of the day Stephen Briggs took 1st place.
Buckets were great - Bren had quite a challenge in keeping up with the (relatively) skinny lad on the (relatively) powerful CBR, but I think he showed us how it's done! (1st, 1st, 1st and 3rd - 1st overall)

Sadly we couldnt secure tv coverage for this years event, we were trying right up untill the closing weeks but couldnt secure funding. There was a documentary being filmed on the day which looks interesting.

The good news is that because of the high success of this years event, the West Coast development trust have already confirmed tv funding for the 2009 20th anniversary event.

I asked that question again this year

We did a sidecar demo about 4-5 years ago hoping to get on the program the following year

Phil Garret was working with the Greymouth committee on it and told us once MNZ was approached for sidecars to be on the permit they pulled out the stewards report from the meeting we'd done a demo at and which no one else knew about and said it was a "no go" as the track was considered dangerous for us to run at
