View Full Version : Could be in for a move. What is the Horowhenua district like?

Bren

Well, the wife is applying for a job at the Otaki Library, so we could be in for a move (She has the career)...Her family is in Paraparaumu, Kapiti, and she is keen to get back up around her home area. I have only visited Pram and do not know much about Horowhenua...So what is the place like? What are the people like and most importantly are there any good rides there?

there's miiiiles of good roads here mate....

Otaki hasn't got a lot going for it (job wise and night life, unless you like three pubs walking distance from one another) but like Yod said, roads within striking distance are pretty good !
mmmm Redneck in Brotaki ? hehe could be interesting !

yup, but I am the sorta guy that can put my hand to most things and do okay, so am not too worried, although I would prefer to stay with stores or logistics...

I think you are confusing the term Redneck with Bigot, an easy mistake as Redneck is used also as a term for a close minded bigot. I am in no way a bigot, and use the term redneck to describe what it was originally intended for, that is a down to earth blue collar worker who incedently loves beer, nascar, tits and any other unsavoury uncouth hobbies such as riding bikes, farting in public and showing ass clevage whilst bending over.

Awww harsh lol true but harsh ! Biggest prob with otaki now is teens and the american gansta attitude ! Depends if ya wanna live in the town centre and walk the streets !
Warmest part of the lower north island would have to be Te Horo beach ! Has its own micro climate, can be cold and raining in waikanae, levin (always rains in levin) even the highway in Te Horo but the sun will shine at the beach (sometimes)

Mate you must be near (younger ass clevage) a mirror image of meself then lol ! Never meant to imply you were a bigot, hell i listen to hip hop NOT !
Not a long haul to the trucking central Grenada to the south or even better ride, palmerston north for logistics/stores etc !

Go Waikanae!! I've lived in several place's and you would think i like to talk up my home town sadly this is not case. I aint exactly the smallest guy and pretty well known around the town but even i have been subject to a home invasion and a few stand over. BROTAKI is the correct term!:spanking:

Speaking volumns here Ynot fast !

Otaki is cleaning its act up quite well i'd say and it all depends on how much you want to pay for a property ! Prices in otaki have risen sharply in the last few years but Pram and waikanae have been way over the top for donkeys ! All comes down to What RN has to spend on a property ! Be a hell of a lot of mortgagee sales coming up soon i recon !

Bren
20th May 2008, 21:06
mortgagee sales, i love that idea, but with downturn in real estate it will make it harder to sell our house down here...always a double edged sword when u have to sell to buy

If you intend to buy look at say, Tauranga! Lived 43 years in Otaki. what a shit hole. Night life NIL. Job prospects NIL. Future NIL.
DON'T DO IT MAN!!!
Levin's not a lot better. Waikanae is god's waiting room full of moaning old farts. If you are in stores and logistic's you will end up working in Wellington. Another shithole. Cold wet and farking windy.

When did you live in Otaki? could I know of you? you too have a high opinion of the "old home town". I lived there from 1958 to 2001. don't know where my brain was at.:brick:
sadly I have to keep going back because my Mum's still there and my son lives in Pram (marginally better) hate to go there and can't wait to leave that's if you can get round that fucking stupid round about at the bottom of the ramp.

veggies are cheap here with all the market gardens.. it depends on what your looking for rider urban or rural living .. keep in mind it really does not matter where you live scum are everywhere .. however some parts of levin you do not want to live :msn-wink:

Otaki is in the Kapiti Coast District and the Greater Wellington Region. We need more ratepayers. Welcome!

The "Horowhenua" is part of three Districts (Manawatu, Horowhenua and Kapiti Coast) and two Regions (GW and Horizons).

What few stretches of winding road this area once had are being progressively vandalised by Transit.

Think its relevent to the lifestyle ya want !
Party animal? Go to palmy or wellington ! Nothing to do when it comes to nightlife in between the cities !
Coast has become crack central so if ya have any sort of issues with that shit, You'll know you wont be able to help but associate with the likes !~
Kids ! Mmmmm not so good up this way, then where is for teens ?
Beaches and bush? Cant beat the coast !
Riding ? Further north ya go the better !
I personally hate to travell south of here (otaki), Cops seem to spring up everywere, only reason to do so is to hit the paekok hill and loop through the wairarapa, then home via paihiatua track (3 or 4 hr loop), but then still prefer to do it the other way round !
Traffic ? lol will either frustrate the hell out of ya or scare ya shitless after riding the southern roads !~ There is a traffic jam nearly every day in otaki now (getting worse), once you get past say levin it thins out (feul costs dont seem to be slowing the trend)
Ppl in general (excluding riders) ya meet in the street ? well known fact that the further north ya go the less ppl acknowledge ya !
Used to get blown away by the southern hospitallity when i cross the ditch !

Crime ? irrelevent, Doubt ya leave ya doors open at night down there now anyway ! (just so happens i do, wide open, for the dog to go out at night)
Any place is as safe as ya want it, sure there are areas ya dont want to live in lol but the element in every town !

If you and the mrs trip up here for her interview or the like, give us a yell ! Dont have accom. to offer but know of a few affordable options !
If yr fully licenced, bring your gear even if you dont bring the Nij. Spare bike screaming to be riden here ! Will take you guys for a look around, see if we cant con the palmy guys into joining us for a strop round the manawatu !

My husband was born and bred (we chose not to breed) in Otaki and lived there until I met him, sad bastard! I got him to move to Levin a while later, now we're north of there and it's lovely. Away from all the ones who either used to be in Kimberly or should have been...

But I digress - great roads nearby and great cafes in Palmerston North. Otaki has all the outlet shops but Levin is bigger. Depends on what you're after really. Do you like nightlife? Then neither place is for you! Do you like peace and quiet? I'd go for Levin. My brother-in-law lives in Otaki and works in Palmerston North - he even rides to work (pushbike!) in summer.

Its in the middle of everything! Nice weather, close to ALL the best roads, Cheap rent (but starting to increase), increasing number of bikers.

Nightlife sucks ass. If you like to go out, go into Wellies. Palmy has its moments, but Welly is always a good night out.

Levin has few restaurants, little nightlife, and a slight oversupply of P heads.

On the other hand, its only a few minutes from great beaches, good hunting and fresh water fishing, and property is reasonably cheap.

Rates are comparitively low, and so is the cost of living.

You may have N.Zs cheapest electricity, as Mr. Bradfords electricity reforms were snapped up here, and the local community formed a trust which returns profits to consumers.

You can go to the movies and park right outside the cinema, there is a great sports ground, and a good playpark for the kids, or a top class pool and hydroslide if they prefer to get wet.

Wanna decent feed ? When I lived in Karori it used to take me 35 minutes to drive to town, find a park that I wouldnt get towed from and walk through the rain to a restaurent. In 35 minutes you can drive to Palmy, Paraparumu, Foxton, or Feilding and park right outside your restaurent.

So... its what you make of it !

Levin is loverly ! I was down there recently (April) for the national secondary school mountain bike champs, me and four boys

Great town, lovely view over to some big hills, a loverly lake somewhere close - awesome walks around it.

We will be back down next year for the champs (and every year for around the next eight years once all my boys go through the craze!).

Can highly recommend Panorama Motor Lodge - really friendly people, great accommodation, spa, pool, putput, playground, garage for secure parking (for your baby), great spot.

Hey check out these great pics of a mountain bike launching through the crowd - hit my boy on the head (ouch, concussion, lacerations) and broke a woman's neck (or did something to her spine - maybe not broke - horrid though) ...... http://www.nzride.com/news.php?artid=74 In the third photo my son's in the brown shirt with his hands up - my other son (his twin brother) is in the blue shirt - I'm well out of it - you know, save yourself or you remain unsaved hehe .....

There is good fishing all around here. The Manawatu area has some great fresh water fishing, and good rivers.

The sea fising is excellent too. Launch your boat off the beach at Waikanae and go to Kapiti Island diving, crays etc. - just don't stray into the reserve. Or go North if you don't lke beach launching and cross the Foxton (Manawatu) Bar.
