This is the first year I've begun commuting full time on a bike and its starting to get a wee bit niply in the morning here in Wellywood. What do other people use? Balaclava or just neckwarmer? Problems under helmets? With earphones in?

One neckwarmer I bought was ok, just a $15 jobby from Leather Image

But wasn't enough when wearing a skull cap and sometimes not enough when a full face so I got an Oxford cotton balaclava to compliment it. That went ok and was better but mega foggage on the glasses and helmet visor.

Then I bought a leather neck warm face mask combo.. great thing. Breaths well, bloody warm. Slightly big for me so I'm taking it to a tailor soon to get it brought down around the nose.

Well I've tried them all and the Revit balaclava is the best.

Reasons? Well a neck warmer is hard to keep in place as they roll down when you pull the helmet on. The Revit balaclava (http://www.ascycles.com/detail.aspx?ID=44312) is made of three materials. The skull part is very thin fabric that doesn't stretch or go out of shape and it keeps the cold air off the cheeks and neck. Then there is a wind proof hi-tech fabric for the nose/mouth and then a waterproof neck bib. This combination is just the bees knees. If I wanted anything more it would be a longer bib front that goes right down the sterum but with my new Motoline jacket, that are no longer gets cold.

Christ, and I thought my run of the mill neck warmer bought off TradeMe was neat.

I have one of these

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Helmets-clothing-footwear/Other/auction-156148470.htm

I find it great ... warms the neck and the ears ... up over the nose ..

I find that I don't really like balaclavas much and that the neck warmer on its own is my preference though. Although I do wear a silk balaclava with it in winter ... mainly so it doesn't slip when putting the helmit on ...

I recommend the Icebreaker neck tube. The merino is warm even when it gets wet. I can't wear a balaclava because there isn't enough room in my helmet for me to be able to wear one.

Sounds exactly like the Oxford Chill out balaclava I just bought, I like it, fits really nice and as with yours it could do with being a jot longer front and rear i'd say but otherwise it's a wee ripper.

I use the Oxford "I'll murder your family" face mask. Works well. Tuck it into the neck part of my jacket and it's quite warm.

Meh.
I've tried all sorts of things, but the problem with many of the neckwarmers is they restrict movement a bit much. With my current jacket and helmet, all I'll need once it gets 'cold' in D'Auckland is the silk balaclava I bought last year for some pifflingly small amount ($7? $10? I can't remember). It's thin, warm, takes up no room, and does the job.
With my previous jacket, it had a detachable neck warmer, but I had to add an extra piece to the thermal liner, as cold seeped through in the middle where the zip was, despite it being at least two layers.

Nah, I use one of these, definatley warm but has stretched so I have to re-adjust once my helmets on to get it nice and tight around my nose/cheeks.
I also find it bunches around the neck restricting movement - but you get used to it.

I use a product called "Buff". It is a long tube, about 1 third fleece and the rest and thin fabric. You can wear it a number of ways from just around the neck to a full over the head balaclava type product. It works really well.
I got it in the UK but I'm sure I have seen them here.

Neck tube "thingy".
Helmet on and then shove the end up under the helmet. Toasty warm. Pissing with rain = no worries!

Bought from a ski shop.

Bought my balaclava from Kathmandu but it tends to slip down my forehead when shoving my helmet on. Here in Aucks the temperature is never meant to get cold enough to need anything like that, moderate/tropic climate yadda yadda (yeah right)! If need be I'll most likely be a total granny and knit myself a custom fitting one from a nice fine, but warm, wool.

I use a silk balaclava most of the time although I just got myself a fleece made in new zealand skiing balaclava so that should be good.

Another vote for Icebreaker neck tube...

Used to wear a ski thing that went down yer front and back but it would get tangled as I put my jacket on so tube it is...

I use the Oxford neck warmer when it is dry. It is a really good wind breaker but in the wet the rain just runs down my neck and pools in unmentionable places.

My favorite is a polarfleece neck warmer when wet it holds the water and does not pool. It is not as wind proof as the oxford but more practable for me. Works well for both full face and open face. ( yes I wear the open face during the winter)

I used to wear a balaclava but always had trouble with me specs fogging so I now use a polar fleece neck warmer. A bit tricker to get the jacket done up but warm and also helps quieten up the helmet a bit. Not sure how well it's gonna work with the whisper kit I've fitted to the helmet - hasn't been cold enough for the warmer yet.

I just use a nice thin merino scarf. Its quite wide, so I can tuck it up under my chin, and into my jacket. Toasty, but will probably suck in the rain (havent worn it in the wet yet). :cold:

I have an Oxford Toasty face mask. Neoprene upper and polarfleece lower. I have a Shoei helmet with really tight cheek pads and it slips right past them. Lovely an warm on a frost morning.

I got me one of these:

http://www.damart.com.au/Product_Detail.aspx?ParentCategoryID=43&CategoryID=99&ProductID=24182

The last one I had lasted 5 years, they are virtually indestructible. They stay on tight and don't move around under the helmet. I use a silk balaclava as well if it gets really cold.

I just orderd a neck warmer off tardme. I've been using a silk balaclava that I have had for years and it rocks. We'll see how this is in comparison. I'll post back how I like.

I've been using a polar fleece neck warmer. Best ten bucks I've spent in a long time. Tucks into my jacket and helmet no worries and doesn't restrict movement much at all.

I've got one of those (Warmrider neck warmer), it fits well, not too bulky but on longer trips it doesn't stop the wind enough. I got myself a REV'IT 'Tube Windcollar' from motomail which stops the wind a bit better, but it's baggy and doesn't go down so far. I had to cut holes in it where it goes over my mouth/nose so I could breath. Most of the time I wear the Warmrider by itself, but on longer trips I'll wear the REV'IT thing over the top of it. It gets a bit bulky though and is a pain to put on and take off. And it's still not as wind proof as I'd like.

A few weeks ago I got some of the chillout inners and at the first shop i went to they didn't have them but had access to the importers and could order me some on line and the second shop had them in stock. Ring around i am sure they'll be easy to get at the bike shops in Welly.

I've got a buff. Very good., fairly warm even in this chilly air, LOL.
Cycletreads sell them too, and also the oxfod neck warmers.
I noticed on the lates BIKE RIDER or KIWI rider mag that if you subscribed to them you got a free neck warmer.
