Defensive driver training?

Where do you go to do a defensive driving course to reduce your restricted licence time?

Are they practical or only theory based?

Yep an AA approved defensive course... Most people do the exact same one as a car. Which pisses people off like me who have already done that course to get their full car licence grrr! Apparently there is an in car lesson based on hazards these days, although they haven't thought very hard because most bikers wont be able to drive the car lol :bash:. Yeah they're idiots. So just sit in the car and make the instructor drive while you casually point out the hazards haha!

There is no bike specific defensive driving course (that counts for the expemption) as far as i am aware. And no you can't use the certificate twice, as in you have to do it once for car, once for bike, same course, twice.

Well yeh, you have to pay to do it again for your other licence. Doesn't matter about time difference or anything. You just have to. Perhaps if you talk nicely to the place that does the course they may have a way of getting around it - like you pay them the basic fee (without their costs) for the administration shit and get a second certificate.

Just so you know, it's an indexed certificate too, so if you try and use the same certificate twice it will show up in the system as a duplicate and you'll get a slap on the hand.

Many years ago when I was a lad.... I sound like my dad.
There was a specific school called the Coca Cola riding school that was run at Western Springs. A 7 week course every Saturday morning. As a result of this I had a full license at 15 years 7 weeks and was regularly riding 1100cc bikes at that time.
They had trouble getting financial backing and support from the government and it basically closed down when Western Springs wouldn't renew the lease.
It's a shame because something like this would be great today.

I did my defensive driving course about 12 months ago now. It was a generic theory course, with a 'bike practical.

The only benefit I got from doing my course (apart from shortening the time to full licence) was that the guy driving with me in the car at the end went through the bike test requirements - so we did a dummy bike test - in my car

I am looking at doing one just to shorten the time on my restricted. I already have full car licence, and did the defensive course for this when i was at high school. sucks having to do it again.

I talked to someone from an AA centre. Cost is $120 for four theory classes (2 hours long) and $45 for the practical part of the test... which is in a car but is about picking hazards.
