alright guys the time has come!
we are a week away from the CC Challenge and im excited! so for all of you out there here is a re-cap
WHAT: CC Challenge
WHY: To raise funds to be donated to the running of this site and a donation to Outward Bound, also as a personal challenge THIS IS NOT A RACE
WHERE: Auckland to the Cape
WHEN: Friday 6th June 2008 due to be back in Auckland on Sunday 8th June 2008
MEET POINT: The bottom carpark (next to the outlet stores) at Westgate shopping center. We will be meeting at 6am SHARP, with a brief before we DEPART at 7am. we dont need typical late bikers.
ENTRY CRITERIA: This is open to anyone who meets the following criteria.
Bike must cost no more than $1000, have a current warrant and reg (or be completely unsuitable to the journey at hand). Your bike MUST be ROAD LEGAL
The bike must have less than 200cc or a flat out top speed of less than 120.
The bike must not be capable of cruising at 100.
If you are unsure if your bike meets the criteria feel free to PM one of the organizers to verify, either BigDog or myself, it will not be discussed in the thread until a ruling has been provided please PM one of us if you are unsure.
ROUTE PLAN: At this stage Ixion's route seems a suitable one, but any suggestions are welcome. a map will be attached once the route has been marked out and finalized so watch for that.
RISKS: As you are all aware this is ENTRY AT YOUR OWN RISK we will be on open roads in all weather conditions, you are responsible for your own safety. ALL RIDERS MUST HAVE the appropriate clothing for the ride and be wearing a HI-VIS vest, this is for your safety. As we are riding in a group there shouldnt be to many issues out there with traffic.
If you have first aid certification please let me know.
also it is a recommendation to carry a first aid kit and a puncture repair kit as we will be on gravel roads.
COST: There will be an entry cost to this event this is yet to be decided on the amount and all funds go into the kitty to be donated, also at this stage we anticipate some costs for food (beers and BBQ) and accommodation for both nights or if there is a friendly biker out there that doesnt mind letting us sleep on your lawn or paddock for a night drop me a line.
SWEEP VAN/TRUCK: We need a volunteer/s to drive behind as a safety car and a sweep vehicle. WE CAN NOT RIDE UNLESS WE HAVE ONE this is also for safety reasons. So drop me a PM if you can provide your service.
what i need now is a yes no answer only if you are attending the ride as i have noticed you guys suck on signing up on my calendar link!
also final costs are $100 entry this includes accomidation and food only this is to be paid to me either before or on the day of the ride. i know its short notice but PM me if you have a problem paying and we xan sort something out im sure.
i still need a sweep/fuel truck to come along so if you can be there PM me now!
any other questions just ask ill do my best to answer you ASAP
cheers guys may this event be fun safe and successful!

So who's coming, anyway?
43 people voted "Yes - I would love to participate" on the poll, and there are only 12 people signed up (of which 2 have said they're out)??
Where are the other 30 or so people that voted yes??

Something tells me you have limited your market somewhat. I would be in, but a decent GN125 both exceeds 120kph and exceeds $1K.

 A GN125 can exceed 120km/h?? My GX125 (basically the same thing as a GN125 except different styling) struggles to get up to 100km/h! Maybe I'm too fat for it... :weep:

I am negotiating with the War Minister to be allowed to shadow this ride part way up. (Albeit on my "big" bike.)
Aside from that, I will be on standby with car and trailer for recovery purposes.
Gijoe1313 will have my contact details, available 24/7 during the ride.

Okay, once again. If your bike meets the spirit of the adventure it does not matter if it does not comply on up to half of the criteria.
Please submit a case to Fireball or myself if you wish to bring something outside the rules or if you are in doubt.
Did I say I'm in?
I'll go if I can go :)

Hope to ride up and meet ya part way on the return though...

Rofl, Justin.
Nice to see Pippi out in the countryside.
If I'd got my Cub a little earlier I'd be joining you lot :D
Yes thats a bomb belt + a rocket launcher backpack ;)
But unfortunately the rocket pack is now out of order since GIJOE dropped it just before the ride  (yes, really he did)
P.S. Bobafett? Pikachu? Countryside? A100? Hmmm none of them seems to make a harmony.... Well thats what GIJOE is, isn't it?

The bodies are sore, but the biker spirits are soaring. Sooooo many good times had so far, and still a whole 'nother 12 or so hour day of riding to go!
I think we have some new GN feats to outdo even you Chocco! :shit: Lavaa took his GN up ninety mile beach, then plowed up the river at full speed. Got a couple of good photo's that'd put the shotover jet to shame!

Correct, arrived back in Whanga's at about 5.15 and shoved Pippi into a trailer so she could continue the trek! The other 5 had gone down the Darg- Maungaturoto track so would have been in approx Maungaturoto at that time. LOTS of fun had by all and will post photies later.

That was an AWESOME trip, thanks to Big Dog and Fireball for organising it! :first:
Highlights:
Riding up 90 Mile Beach
Riding up Te Paki Stream
Average moving speed of under 50km/h over the three days
Seeing a LONG chain of car headlights behind us coming back from Wellsford -> Auckland :scooter:

Well I gots homes around 2100hrs and Pippi is being nursed by Daisy .. :sweatdrop
What an experience! 'Twas awesome, am tired (this will be a shock for those who know what I am like )
Donor and zeocen met Laava and his partner up in Whangarei and we loaded Pippi into the trailer. Stopped off in Orewa at the golden arches for the major food grouping of fat, sugar and salts.
I rung the olds to inform I was safely home (I think mum got the jitters when Donor turned up to take the bucket o'tiedowns) and then Jeaves to see how he was after his unfortunate incident with a cage.
Guess I will have to do a proper write-up later on as there is gear to sort out and other things!
Donor and I were trying to spot the crew riding back home, but it appears we got ahead of them?

Yeah, it's great! But you must realise, it has a single cylinder 125cc 4-stroke engine, which means top speed is about 105-110km/h (indicated) at which point it reaches redline in top gear and feels like the engine is going to explode and the bike is going to spontaneously fall to pieces.
So it's really only any good around town, unfortunately. And on the beach, and up the stream!

Nope, no coppers on the beach, only encountered two vehicles coming the other way the whole time (about 40km of the top part of 90 Mile Beach), and it was FUN!! Basically you just have this big wide road for you to play on, I pretended to be Burt Munroe, lying down on the tank and opening up the throttle, only got up to about 80km/h though, cos traction isn't so great. On some of the drier patches I felt the back wheel suddenly lose power, but oh it was AWESOME. :ride:

Well, THAT was fun!
A leisurely drive to Hirepool, uplifting a trailer, fuel for the beast and then a short wait for Zeocen to turn up on his 2 wheel beast, then a hop up to Whangarei for the uplifting of a sad looking Pippi.
Got to the information centre in Whangarei just on 2, and waited... and waited... and waited some more.
Sure, 3 and a half hours is a bit of a wait, but info centres are great!
Mini bus after mini bus after camper van after touristvehicle, with lots of... errr... interesting people to look at.
Even Angry Chick(tm) from the Info centre cafe was a topic of conversation for a while (well, for Zeocen anyway, seems to have a thing for short chicks with long dark hair dressed in black and surly attitudes...)
After many fervent texts to various peoples, the odd phone call ("How much bloody longer are ya gonna be??") and watching Subaru after Subaru of the Whangarei contribution to the decline of the gene pool, lo! The mighty GN escorted Pippi into town, atop the beast that was The Ute(tm)
Met Laava, the fine young lass behind the wheel of The Ute(tm) and lightly mocked one weary yet well fed looking Asian fellow.
Loaded Pippi into the trailer, and then we were on our way, stopping briefly at McD's Orewa for a quick intake of heart disease before continuing on to the home of the gijoe1313 - WHERE I BACKED THE TRAILER UP THE DRIVE PERFECTLY! :headbang:
Next time - I'm going up that way on 2 wheels dammit... these rescues are fine and good, but nowhere near as much fun!

Cor blimey that's the most fun I've had in a long time.
I've driven in a car to Haunted Kastle Klingon more times than I can remember, but somehow doing it on a bike at 45km per hour accompanied by a bunch of good humoured, rather eccentric, very adventurous people was unlike any other trip!
I was very sorry that Pippi didn't make the distance under her own power. She's a great little machine with a good attitude - she really did her best to take that madman all the way. Never mind, we are assured she will get another chance as soon as the duct tape has set.
I'm not as sore today as I thought I would be. I recommend Bike Yoga to anyone undertaking a long journey at 45kph. I also recommend Dog Turds and Cat Crap - two products that did their job well and helped us to get home in one piece.
My special thanks to Mama Jo for her patience and generosity. It takes a special kind of human being to tag along behind a bunch of mad bikers at a snail's pace for many, many hours and not complain. And even more for putting up with gijoe in the cab! I can't imagine what the conversation would have been like!

so has anyone rang colemans yet?

You should ring Colemans! After all, it was you they almost mashed! Imagine the headlines if a vehicle belonging to a Suzuki dealership flattened a bunch of Suzukis after they had made it all the way to the Cape and back!
That was pretty scary to watch from behind. And totally unnecessary since we were keeping left and giving everyone plenty of room.

Only the one? shit, i lost count of the cagers who nearly took me out between darg's and home. But yeah, that run through the dome valley was pretty nasty. Was a bit hard to tell if that was two bike headlights behind me or a cage at times, but when you started sitting up to the right and owning the lane it was easier to tell, could see the outline of a classic cruiser position from the headlights of the cage behind you. Would've made a cool photo if i wasnt so busy fighting for my piece of road! :D

Righto, I remember some early time at 5.20am getting to Westgate ... riding around wondering where everyone was! Getting a bit worried I rung Big Dog and got the "mwuauhaggrgegghh" anyways turns out he had slept through several alarms and I was his wake up call!
Eventually the crew turn up and we somehow managed to leave some time past the 7am sharp departure time (this would be the format for the rest of the ride!)
The trip up was eventful and I got to see some new roads that even I had not travelled yet! :woohoo: I had several wardrobe failures when my rocket pack decided to launch at inappropriate moments! Once out of Wellsford and the other at Maungatapere! Got some engineers to sort it out once they got past the chuckling and it wasn't a bother for the rest of the trip.
Plenty of gas stops, ciggy breaks and pulling over to let cagers zip on by. Pikachu attracted his usual share of attention and the kids who saw him all smiled (he's so good with kids!) :baby:
The weather was balmy and the skies were clear, borrowing Maverick's Weather-Genie(TM) was one of my better ideas ... the sight of Big Dog's large frame on the smallest bike never failed to elicit a chortle from me - Legendary that be!
It was most funny at Kerikeri when Big Dog looked like he had been slapped with a mullet when he realised we still had to ride to Houhora and ... beyond!
Plenty of photo ops and a night ride on gravel to the Haunted Demesne of Klingon added to the thrill, not least when somewhere along the way Pippi spat her baffle out and allowed herself to be as loud as she wanted! :innocent:
Anyway the crew were well glad that we could rest our weary bones and get some tucker into our bellies. Since moi is a resident short order cook/chef, I doffed Bounty Hunter gear and got down to serious cooking. Steaks, snarlers, smashed potatoes and a smoked out gallery later ... we were all contented.
We all rambled on, I talked about yodelling axe-wielding, homicidal maniacs and jumped at ghosts on the deck. The House was full of suprises. Many nooks and crannies and an Amityville Horror look to it ... I bunkered in the nearest room to the exit and was too excited to sleep ... the prospect of the Cape loomed large in my imagination! :ride:
gijoe1313
9th June 2008, 22:20
Well, Big Dog laid the law down last night and said everyone was to have a lie-in. Me being the usual impetuous fool, got up early as, started Pippi up... and she egged me on to do some more riding! A pre-ride ride so, to speak!
I decided to be totally non-ATGATT compliant and rode sans bone dome, glubs and only had my boots and non-bounty hunter regalia on. :nono:
I zipped motard style around the gravel and explored every single side road I could find. Went to the beach several times and beeped out a symphony on Pippi's horn and I sung "Hello birds, hello beach, hello world ... ad infinitum" and watched the sun come gently over the horizon to bathe us in its glow. :sunny:
I then proceeded to piss off the rest of the crew by zipping around near the hostel and found a walking track at the back of the property. Being the fearless, foolhardy intrepid explorer ... I manhandled Pippi over the small walking track and zipped along at it a goodish pace.
Until the classic minty moment happened and I hit two branches at chest height around a corner and got twanged backwards and Pippi continued merrily on her way before lying down and waited for me!
Anyhow, I rode on for many more kms like that (worked out I could have made it to the cape!) and then I found out that brekkie needed to be cooked, but we needed more supplies! I volunteered immediately, being the sort that needs any excuse for a ride and I fired up Pippi again and pootled off again! Huzzah!
And that is where my journey wound its way down to being a delayed finish. A loud pop, a backfire and poor Pippi lost power and glided to the side of the road. I did what I could, but since I had taken out all my tools from my bag to carry the groceries, another minty moment had overcome me! :slap:
So, there I was slowly riding Pippi like a little hobby horse until I came to a likely looking residence and I made the acquaintance of a friendly lady there. We got to nattering and it turns out she rode a small 120 in her day! We used what tools there were and as soon as I got the spark off, I knew what had happened.
It is a two-stroke and it is what they does, thats why we loves them we do! :msn-wink:
I surmised the material around the cap of the spark meant a holed piston, but had to wait till she was back and the rest of the crew were standing around her going oo-aar, that don'look right dunnit? :doctor:

The trip up was eventful and I got to see some new roads that even I had not travelled yet! :woohoo: I had several wardrobe failures when my rocket pack decided to launch at inappropriate moments! Once out of Wellsford and the other at Maungatapere! Got some engineers to sort it out once they got past the chuckling and it wasn't a bother for the rest of the trip.
Oh yeah... sorry about riding over your bung. Was pretty exciting following you and wondering when the rocket was next going to launch itself in my direction...
Plenty of photo ops and a night ride on gravel to the Haunted Demesne of Klingon added to the thrill, not least when somewhere along the way Pippi spat her baffle out and allowed herself to be as loud as she wanted! :innocent:
Yeah and Pippi made a great 2-stroke alarm clock in the morning, riding round and round the house and off down the track. And then Pippi got her revenge!
Anyway the crew were well glad that we could rest our weary bones and get some tucker into our bellies. Since moi is a resident short order cook/chef, I doffed Bounty Hunter gear and got down to serious cooking. Steaks, snarlers, smashed potatoes and a smoked out gallery later ... we were all contented.
mmmm I think you should be the designated cook for all future cc challenges. Yummy food and plenty of it! We definitely ate well on this trip thanks to Mr Joe knowing his way around a kitchen.

So anyways thanks to Laava and his Ute of Splenderifous Flexibility and Handy Contrivance, Pippi was sped back to the Hostel where many arcane plans of repairing her abounded. Thank god some semblance of sanity sintered in amongst us and we just allowed me to laze in the Ute with Mamma Jo! :woohoo:
Pikachu took this moment to abandon ship and continue on with Fireball! That little guy sure knows how to keep on two wheels of freedom! :wari:
A slap-up brunch later and we made our way to Cape Reinga. T'was kewl to be on such a japery route with Laava and Musicman riding on the beach. My key role from then on was to be support dogsbody and run around and do general duties! Pushing bikes out of sandy ruts, tying up loose Pippis and having a good ol'natter with Mamma Jo about oysters, sealing wax, flying pigs and kings!
I got to see Laava in action with his stupendous riding abilities and I learnt a thing or two about off-road action :gob: Crikey! I was well impressed with the trialling abilities of the little bikes! :niceone:
Anyway turns out the "shortcut" on the beach meant that Big Dog was despatched to find us! All good, we met up at the junction and rode to the Cape! Egads! Our destination in sight, the fists were punched to the sky and the Biker Gods smiled down and were pleased.
Klingon was a mine of information and Laava was well disappointed that the snackage he brought down to the lighthouse could not be consumed. Tapu and all that! :sweatdrop
It was quite nice, we were the only peeps there apart from a young couple who wondered where all these filthy biker scum had appeared from!

Well on the way back, we stopped off for ice creams, I stocked up on more grub and cackled maniacally about "if it doesn't eat its greens, it gets no puddings" I mentally roamed liberally around a menu and what was at hand. I dived into coolers, poked around in freezers, felt up soft spuds, glared at garlic, prodded some cheese and walked out with enough stuff to feed an army.
Oh alright ... enough to feed Big Dog! :bleh:
The trip home was quick and I promptly got down and became Gordon Ramsey
, barking out orders for spuds to be peeled, onions to be chopped and a myriad of instructions to get a proper feed on.
Pots bubbled, pans sizzled and a cooking frenzy was upon the Haunted House of Klingon. I think the ghost ducked for cover as implements and ingredients flew thick and fast with no thought spared for the sensibilities of those not used to cooking gijoe1313 stylin' :weird::drinknsin:apumpin:
It was most relaxing night, most of us parked around the boob tube watching Johhny Depp being seduced by Heather Graham in some Jack the Ripper feature. I half expected a lederhosen wearing, chainsaw wielding, oompah band playing, homicidal midget to be storming through the Haunted House of Klingon.
In the end, there was only Musicman and I to face ... the music :slap:
We watched Cops : Las Vegas and commented on the speedo requirements for the bicycle cops. Bed beckoned and it was said that we had to be up earlyish again to get a good start for the journey home ...
And since others have posted their experiences in regard to this part of the sojourn, I shall digress from writing any more and instead, lean back in my office chair, take a swig of Bundaberg ginger beer and think ...
"Next time, I'll bring TWO small inappropriate bikes to do the CCC!" :stupid::eek:
Thanks to those who organised, brought the Ute, Mamma Jo for her endless patience and putting up with a demented, sponge-bobby type asian character in the cab, the rest of those who were mad enough to be part of this entourage and of course ...
Pikachu! Without that little bundle of yellow fluff, my travels would not be the piquant and Julie Andrewesque adventures that I love to live ...

Day one:
It was with great trepidation I set off from Westgate with six other undersized bikes to undertake the challenge to journey to Cape Reinga on a scooter, expecting 1200 kms in the saddle over 24 riding hours in three days.
Great trepidation because the broken foot is still not healed from a recent crash on the scooter, the tyres are no better scrubbed in and the sky is full of menacing clouds. My confidence is still "shot" in the wet. To compound issues I have developed an exhaust leak causing temperamental power delivery and have not had the time to remedy it.
The contenders:
Fireball - Suzuki Marauder, GN250 based cruiser. Known as "Rawberry"
Klingon - Suzuki Volty, a GN250 based cafe racer.
Musicman - Suzuki 125.
Laava - Suzuki GN200. (A GN250 with customised badges)
GIJoe1313 - Suzuki A100 (two stroke manual)
Badger - Suzuki GN250. Known as "Gina"
Myself: (Big Dog) - PGO PM-S (Registered as a PM-X because the previous owner refused to ride a PM-S) 110cc two stroke scooter. No gears, Auto clutch. Known as "Gordon"
The other contenders and I set off up state highway 16, turned up Old North road to have a look at some more interesting corners and hills to find out who was capable of what. Already it is apparent that this is going to be a slow ride.
At this time I am unsure of the fuel consumption of the scooter, so 4 litres is strapped to the footboards as a plan b this makes for interesting handling given that I cannot move around as easily as I can when there is not a 10l Jerry can bungyed to the foot well.
After rejoining 16 at Kaukapakapa we press on through to Wookcocks road. A much celebrated biker destination for it's tight and twisty corners. What I would not give for a bike with gears at this point. Corners that are a lot of fun on the Hayabusa are suddenly terrifying on a scooter that you dare not back off the throttle too much or you have no power for the next straight and that the new tyres still have a tendency to slide at one end or the other. sometimes both. Praise the lord for a lack or rain.
We arrive in Wellsford with only the smell of an oily rag left in the tank, at least we now have a real idea about the time this trip will take and what the biggest limitation will be. Gordon, my scooter, so named by my old flatmate because she thinks that the scooter is so flash...
She has a range of 100kms under the prevailing conditions, not bad on a 3.5 litre tank. Yes Gordon is a girl.
Now was obviously a good time for a break, a break in a clutch cable... not one of the participants, a tag along on a borrowed bike.
After an hours delay while we fixed his borrowed bike and sent him home we pressed on. Ahh, the Brynderwyns... there Gordon passed a 1000hp monster, an empty fertiliser truck, on the way up. A stop a the top for a little yoga showed who had an who had not prepared for this physically.
From here on in the geography gets a little hazy, having never ridden or driven this far north other than to go directly to Whangarei and we are bypassing Whangarei because it is too direct. Not enough kms for these nutcases.
Next stop Twin bridges. Don't ask me where that is, we were following the guidance of Laava who had ridden down from Whangarei that morning to begin the challenge.
After that much hard riding in that challenging a conditions Gordon needed a rest, the exhaust leak was becoming more prominent and there was a decided reduction in available power... not that there was a lot to begin with.
So lunch at Maugatapere it was.
Two things were quite obvious, the most sensible bike on the ride was a custom GN200 and no one north of Wellsford has ever seen a scooter in person before. I can't say I wonder why. At this point I would have given almost anything for a bike with gears. Many was the prayer of thanks for the fact I was in possession of an iPod to drown out the constant droning of the two stroke 110cc engine with no gears. We have travelled so many marvellous roads that just could not be enjoyed to their full. As an observation though the everyone was saying how nice it was to travel at a speed that allowed the scenery to be enjoyed.
After a wee rest to cool down Gordon was rearing to go again so we pressed on to Keri Keri where we met up with the support vehicle and purchased the food supplies for the trip.
Not surprisingly when we arrived at Awanui for a refuel there was a lot less conversation than had previously been had at other stops.
So it was that we arrived at our mystery location 12:10:00 after departing Westgate.
How great to see the smiles on everyone's faces in spite of the challenges so far. Heart warming to see that even after 9:00:01 in the saddle there were still people buzzing and even some going for short rides just to stay entertained while we tried to locate keys to the accommodation.
The rest of the day (or should I say night) as they say, you had to be there - what goes on tour stays on tour.
Special thanks to my fuel sponsors, Dharmesh Bhana, Aaron Bublitz and the Evans family.

CC Challenge day two.
This was not quite so early a start to the day for some, this was our rest day and our summit day. Many chose to sleep in a little, till 0900.
GIJoe1313 on the other hand felt that 56 kms each way was not a worthy ride for such a glorious day and set about exploring.
Being one who sleeps the sleep of the dead I did not hear most of it, however reports from others indicated that for several hours beginning at 05:00 GIJoe1313 could be heard doing strafing runs on his now debaffled A100. Having lost the baffle the previous night somewhere between Awanui and the mystery destination (as a side note the accommodation is reputed to be haunted and this may account for why he felt the need to go riding so early) the A100 now sounded like a cross between a sewing machine and a machine gun, depending on accelerating or backing off.
A story soon circulates that he has been sent to the dairy for some additional supplies. Not long after we have 6 hungry challengers and our intrepid Sweep Driver (MommaJo) milling around the kitchen in anticipation. Over a period of time the numbers dwindle as people drift off to find something more interesting to do.
Soon the tension builds as the hungry challengers realise they are no closer to being fed. This builds yet further as some receive phone calls with no caller from GIJoe1313's phone.
As we try to locate our missing comrade he arrives sans supplies. Pippi is missing in action.
The support truck soon returns with the wounded Pippi.
The good news? We know what is wrong with it.
The bad news? We do not have a suitable replacement Piston.
It seems that two strokes consider pistons a consumable and the change in pressure caused by the loss of the baffle was enough to fail the piston.
The Irony? The kms covered that morning would have seen Pippi to the Cape under her own steam. But probably not back.
In true biker spirit we set about tearing down to see if there is any possible way that we can do a temporary fix.
After several hours trying to locate the necessary tools or a suitable substitute piston we are forced to transfer Pikachu to a different ride. Pikachu now rides aboard Rawberry with Fireball. Pippi now rides aboard the support vehicle with Mommajo at the wheel and GIJoe1313 running shotgun.
4 kms down the road I come to a sudden halt and am quickly swarmed by concerned looking riders. No need to panic I just forgot to initiate the GPS. Oops, 4 kms of data lost.
We had a brief stop over in Te Kao to separate into two groups (the road going group and the 90 mile beach group) and so the support vehicle could get ice-cream.
Luxury, absolute luxury.
Fireball, Klingon, Badger and I headed on up Far North Road (bit of a hint about its location in that name I think). Musicman and Laava headed up the beach with the support vehicle in hot pursuit.
The "Road Crew" took a leisurely approach knowing we had a few less kms to cover and at a higher average speed.
Hence the many photo ops, stops for pole dancing and a sharing of rations as we waited for the Beach Boys to arrive.
We were of course passed on a blind corner by a black Holden Commodore... we were of course having more fun though. It looked like the passenger had been sucking on a lemon and the driver looked like he had been listening to a monologue of "... Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?..."
Then it got real exciting.
20kms of no straights lots of hills and only about one km of it sealed. Large sections had rather large rocks as substitutes for gravel. these rocks varied in size between golf balls and tennis balls but certainly were not that even.
The result for the majority of this final stretch Gordon was bucking like a bronco stung by a bee and with the steering column whipping round like an agitator in a washing machine, often with only a hope and a prayer keeping her travelling in the right direction. Keeping in mind that the slower you go the less control I had, the only way to get Gordon to cooperate on the gravel was to stay over 65kmph. On one particularly steep stretch a rather large rock conspired with the hill to loft us into a wheelie. A wheelie that I lacked the confidence to put down for fear Gordon would not get moving again on that steep a grade in gravel that deep. Cue about 30 metres of stand-up wheelie on a scooter! It may have only been a foot off the ground but that is a long way on a scooter under those conditions.
I cannot describe the sense of achievement when we finally rolled in to the Cape Reinga car park.
There was of course much patting each other on the back and general frivolity as we ruined our average speed for the day by walking down to the lighthouse.
We had done it. We made the cape. We still had to make it home but most of us felt that this was already mission accomplished and the rest was just gravy.
Whilst huddled around the support vehicle like a flock of seagulls the possibility of repeating the event was brought up. The look on the faces was priceless when it was suggested that the next destination should be Bluff. They think I was joking. I think it is worth considering.
Either way there will be a challenge laid down next year!
36 hours before I had had doubts myself that a 110cc scooter could make it that far. Gordon had proven a mighty steed indeed.
What now? Go surfing in the te Paki Giant Sand Dunes of course.
It was not long before we discovered that you need dry sand to surf... or to find I can come down the hill in about 1% of the time it took to get up there.
Given that we were departing in a gathering gloom we sped off at our top speed of 80kmph to te Kao for ice cream. Absolutely massive ice creams as it turns out. With a little dinosaur lolly on top. I fully recommend this as a stop on the way should you find yourself passing through.
Arriving back at the mystery haunted manor that night were some very happy bikers. This is real biking. The challenge the camaraderie, the good times and no attitudes. This would have been far too easy to have had this much fun to had I done the same trip on the Hayabusa.
By now I was of the conclusion that anyone who does not consider scooters motorbikes should consider Gordon an honorary one for life.
As to the adventures in the haunted manor, you had to be there. Come along next year and join in the fun.
Special thanks to my fuel sponsors and to Mommajo our Support / Sweep Driver.

CC Challenge day three.
Having been queried as to what time I was getting up the night before I had advised that I wanted to aim for a 07:00 - 07:30 departure and I would be up when breakfast was served. I have to say I was a little disappointed when I got up for breakfast call to find the eggs were not yet cooked.
After a long hot shower they were so the world as we know it was put to rights. There was not rip in the space time continuum after all.
Given that I was so insistent that we depart as close to 07:00 as could be managed it is no surprise that I was the last one ready and it was past 08:00. I'm good like that.
So it was that we set off out of the rising sun, huge smiles (including GIJoe1313 to give him full credit) firmly, in place most cases with fresh Cat Crap on their visors courtesy of the Badger.
20 kms into the journey something was not right. Gordon was down on power and losing speed. A long fast sweeper provided the why.
Gordon was losing air out of the back tyre. Fast.
Ironically I had held a puncture repair kit in my hand on Thursday and thought, nah I don't need the extra weight. Lucky we were travelling as a team, Laava was not quite so optimistic and had his puncture repair kit with him. The next problem? Laava did not know how to use it. GIJoe1313 to the rescue. So it was that we had a roadside lesson in how to use these.
This was starting to sound like an adult Dr. Seuss story The Big Dog in the big helmet with the Cat Crap on the visor from the Badger now has Dog Crap on the tyre courtesy of Laava as installed by GIJoe1313. Yes that is what the plug is referred to by the manufacturers.
Update from the GPS at this time shows a record moving average of 65kms, this is soon ruined by a 11 km ride back to the gas station, with a max speed of 30kmph, for air as the co2 only provided 11psi. But wait its not ruined? The batteries have gone flat, we have lost some data, no idea how much but up to 11kms. For those of you keeping score that's up to 15 kms lost data.
Back on the road with fresh batteries in the GPS and at what may have been the same corner that familiar I have no air in my rear tyre is back. this time it is not running almost on the rim but it has definitely lost pressure.
Cue plug the leak take 2.
Bearing in mind that we only have one more plug and only one more can of air on board I make the decision to press on to Awanui. If the plug fails before we have another spare tyre mend solution my challenge is over. If I can make Awanui I can put another 9 pounds in, less than recommended but less stress on the patch and hopefully pick up a can of Tyre Weld. My plan being to press on as far as we can putting a few more psi in at each refuelling until I reach recommended pressure or it fails. hopefully not suddenly.
The team put me in the lead so I could maintain as even a speed as possible without having to brake for anyone and we set off.
With the loss of pressure in the rear Gordon now has a top speed of 62.4 kmph.
The good news? The exhaust leak is getting worse. Gordon now sounds like a diesel. Gordon obviously thinks she is a Harley at this point.
We made Awanui, splashed up and had a coffee break, it has taken 2:30 to travel 64 kms.
Even with the increased tyre pressure Gordon's top speed is only 64.2. This is going to be a long one but the team are committed to making it to Tane Mahuta by now.
There is more than a small amount of excitement among some of the riders circling the snack foods when they discover that the secret Laava and Klingon have been keeping from us is that there is a ferry crossing involved.
About 3/4 or the way to the Ferry our ride was briefly disturbed by a tiny puppy wandering loose.
No one was hurt nor even had an accident but we were unable to leave the hapless chap in the middle of the road.
This brief interlude over we took off at full steam hoping to make the next crossing.
At this point I have to ask, what is it about Gordon that makes it so that when we pass slower vehicles the driver gets a look of grit and determination in their eyes right at the moment they see her? How is it she is so intimidating?
I tell you it got real exciting real fast when I committed to passing this farm truck with 1/2 doz dogs in the back on an uphill right hander. I gathered as much speed as Gordon could muster, changed lanes and started to pass the truck. Not a problem, the truck was travelling at half the speed we were. Then the driver spots the scooter, panics, mashes down two gears and rings the poor engines neck before dropping the clutch and lurching forward, now at the same speed as me.
This is where it gets interesting. Given the exhaust leak I am probably pushing Gordon up the remainder of a very steep section of road that I have no idea how long if I give way. So I leaned right down over the bars, thought small thoughts and muttered encouragement to Gordon.
Gordon the little scooter that could found the extra 5-10 kms necessary to complete the manoeuvre.
On the way in to the terminal I saw a sign saying hot coffee. Would have bought instant at that point but for $4 they had Cuban coffee. Pretty good once I added the sugar that the lady forgot to put in even though she asked twice.
I had a haggle with the boat master trying to get us a discount on the group.
He would not have a bar unless we had 10 bikes... Then he saw and asked about the scooter. On hearing the epic journey we were taking her on he insisted that the scooter was free, joking that there was no class on the schedule of prices for a scooter.
It was easy to tell who the real JAFAS were on the ferry.
How did I spot the JAFAS? They were the four people who proceeded to ask me where I got the coffee even though I told them where I was going when I got it. They must have been looking for a Starbucks... Suffice it to say that the tide went out rather quickly on that coffee every time I put it down.
Some would argue I was one for finding a Latté in Hokianga. I say that just makes me resourceful.
The ferry took another bite out of our cruising average with a top speed of 14.2 kmph but at least GIJoe1313 got to ride Pippi under motion again.
Before the Ferry had even docked we were all saddled up and rearing to go. The boat master held up the other vehicles to let us off first. I'm sure it was just so he could have another laugh at Gordon.
In an attempt to make up time we immediately pressed on for Omapere.
On what turned out to be the last hill before Omapere the little scooter that could started stuttering. Then stuttering and missing. Still had gas in the tank but not enough for a hill this steep.
In retrospect I should have gassed up waiting for the ferry.
Oh well part of the journey. 10 kms further on we stopped for gas in Omapere. Musicman found a lot of entertainment in the local pie delicacy but that is his story to tell...
Another 5psi saw Gordon only down 5 and able to manage 75 kmph.
After a refuel of riders and rides we pressed on to Tane Mahuta. We made our visit as short and sweet as we could and left Badger guarding the bikes.
By this time we were really pressed for time and it was apparent we were going to need to really push to make it to Wellsford before dark. Under this intense pressure the Sweep truck made a dash for it with Klingons' keys and helmet still aboard.
This was quickly remedied.
We pressed on through the Waipua forest. This was scarier than the gravel of the far north. At least that was predictably unpredictable. The slimy moss, moist corners, damp pine needles and random gravel meant at least one end let go on most corners. Sometimes both.
The bigger bikes with their fancy "tyres at proper air pressure" did not seem to have as much of an issue.
We arrived at Dargaville with Gordon stuttering and thirsty again.
Quick refuel 5 psi and change to clear visor and were are on the road. Laava, GIJoe1313 and the support truck left to go meet the person coming to collect Pippi in Whangarei (the end of the challenge for Laava).
Hang on a minute I just added 5 psi and I am still short 5 psi.
Heres' hoping the gauge at Omapere is out!
We raced, down the Dargaville straights as fast as Gordon could manage determined to make Wellsford on one stop. I am told that on the Dargaville straights the Vehicle pulling the Coleman Suzuki trailer had a go at mowing down the remaining Suzuki's and a PGO.
We succeeded but it was still dark when we got to Wellsford. Gordon had been stuttering on hills for some time by now. in fact there was no liquid in the tank when we pulled in to the Caltex there. Where fuel is now 16cpl more expensive than on the way up!
We decided there was as good as anywhere for a debrief and promptly had dinner.
A final 5psi was added at Wellsford. Gordon's top speed is now 87kmph. Situation almost normal. before the exhaust leak she could manage 90-95.
Aside from a homicidal maniac in a 4wd the rest of the ride was uneventful.

Conclusions:
Would I do it again? Yes.
Am I mad? Yes and so am I.
Would you do it again next weekend? No, Gordon needs a service (is booked for Saturday) and it would rob the event of some of its special factor if I did it every weekend.
Would you do something similar to Bluff? Assuming that I did not have an exhaust leak and I had such a great crew coming along, Hell Yeah! (err I might want something with gears going that far though...)
The Myths :
You can't take a Scooter on the open road. - Busted.
You can't have fun on a Scooter. - Busted
It would be easier to do it on a larger cc bike - Busted, my Hayabusa would not have made Westgate as it turns out.
Real bikers ride large cc's. - Busted. How many bikers did we pass on our intrepid journey, and how many of those got as much saddle time or had as much fun as us?
In closing I would like to paraphrase a famous New Zealand born adventurer: We Knocked the bugger off!

Went for a ride on the DL tonight with MamaJo and man did the bike feel like a bus after the GN! Took me a while to readjust! I nearly went right over the car in front at the lights as I took off. Too used to giving the GN a big handful over the weekend! Ha ha!

Haahaha, i know the feeling. it's not so much a throttle as an on-off switch eh?
I will have to re-adjust m'self tomorrow. Just time for one last polish in the morning, and Gina goes back to the shop from whence she came... To be replaced with "White Lightning" :2thumbsup
One hell of a last ride for her tho, with one hell of a good crew. Thanks to all those who came, all those who organised, and all those who made it happen in any way shape or form (be it via sponsorship or nay-saying)
I will definitely be keen for the next one!

20th June 2008, 13:23
Yes I'm still doing an article.
[Deadline is today actually! Eep! Better get writing! :dodge:]
The article will be in the July/August edition of Rush Hour Magazine. If you saw the May/June edition you may have noticed the 'teaser' on Page 17... go on, find a copy and take a look.
I will let you know when it's coming out. There's usually a few weeks between submission of an article & distribution of the mag.

So, who is in for next year?
CC challenge 2009?
Should we go back to the cape?
Should we go to Wellington?
Should we go to Opotiki?
Other?
Should we change the category to automatically include 250 crusiers or stick to the current rules?
Are there any other changes people would like to see?

I am keen in spirit, but will have to see how finances pan out. Have many biking plans in my mind, may not leave room to get a beastie especially for the journey.
I reckon the idea of letting 250cc thumpers (the likes of the GN or Volty) in isnt a bad idea. They could've gone a bit faster, but to be honest they are happier cruising at the pace we had for most of the journey than ringin the tits off them for 105km/h
I reckon the cape as a destination worked well. Got to see the rural northland, which gave a real sense of adventure (rather than never being too far from civilisation if heading through the middle of the island). Also, was very good having something like the lighthouse as a destination. If we went to wellington for example... well... we're in wellington... No offense to wellingtonians, but it's just not quite the same as a lighthouse at the tip of the country :bleh:

How 'bout a repeat of the 250 boy's East Cape ride?
Another light house for those with the fetish, and while I missed it (Really can't remember why right now, think that's when I got t-boned..) it did look pretty hairy at some points.

I think that would take too long for a challenge like this... If I recall correctly the East Cape trip was just over 1400km, our average speed for the last CC Challenge was under 50km/h so if we did the East Cape it'll probably take at least 4 days!

The main riding days were 400km each.
Could be done in three but that would leave no time for bike related japery.

that is brilliant idea Josh. Some awesome roads there. We must carry some gas with us tho.
I strongly vote for the east cape.

that is 1400km including the coro loop. If we exlude the coro loop and we start and finish at kaiaua, we get a distance of 1117km which is fine I think.

Oh true! That's right, we did the Coro as well eh... well excluding the Coro that should be fine then, except we'll need to stay somewhere other than Whakatane for both nights, that middle day from Whakatane to the east cape loop and back was pretty long, even on 250s! Something like 600+ kilometres I think? It was a good 9 hours of riding, anyway.

Sorry, not published yet :(
I talked to the Editor about it the other day and he thinks maybe the next edition. I will be sure to let you know.
By the way by "next" I mean it might be a few more months. Rush Hour is only published once every two months, and contributions for the current one closed this week. Unfortunately general human interest stories are lower down the priority list than bike reviews etc. so we'll need to wait until there is room for the story of our Big Adventure.

Holy shitballs batman! That thing would have to be VERY VERY slow. Looking at the figures for weight & power I would doubt that it can go up hills at anything above a crawl (assuming it has a low enough gear ratio to get up hills at all).
