View Full Version : Leather suit tailoring in Wellington?

Does anyone know where I can get a Alpinestars 1pce suit custom tailored for my specific size?
I am about 190cm and pretty much consist of skin, bone and a small amount of muscle = P (weight reductions:lol:).. but seriously, I am skinnier than your average jo-blogs and feel like a fish in my current Shift suit. I want something that feels like a second skin, something that is uncomfortable to stand in but is perfect in the riding position.
I am fairly set on Alpinestars as I have read only great reviews on their gear and the current items I have of theirs, I have been very impressed with..
So, does anyone know of a NZ retail store than can arrange this sort of request for me? If not, anywhere online that can do this?
If worst comes to worse, I will need to buy the suit and take it to a leather tailor to see what they can do for me.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Why don't you go and see Dusty at Leda Leathers...think he is in Lower Hutt. You will get the best custom fit race suit you ever did see. You will not regret it.

Lol.. what are your opinions?
If I am after the absolute best, are there other brands I should be considering?
Does anyone have contact details for Dusty? I have searched Leda etc on Google and the whitepages but couldn't find anything.
Thanks for the suggestions btw

I have a jacket made by Dusty and i'm pretty happy with it, I did'nt quite get what I was after but that is part my fault anyway so yes that's a recommendation but also consider Celtic Leathers in Pahiatua (I know Pahiatua is'nt Wellington) this guy I believe is top notch, he does alterations and builds from scratch.
He's not as cheap as Dusty but he has a fair few more strings to his bow if you will.
He's a decent guy and very interesting to talk to. Some very interesting stuff.

That's his current details.. I'm getting some TradeMe leathers adjusted now.
Ring him first - he works from home. Several top NZ racers use his leathers and he'll repair any leather including bondage stuff. DAHIK.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will certainly check out these options.
RE Quassi: I have heard that the leather on the Quassi gear is a little stiffer than other top brands. To be honest I'm not sure if this is fact or myth... What do you have to say about this? I would appreciate anyone else's input who own or have used Quassi 1pce suits on this question.. No disrespect or discredit to Quassi intended here by the way, just investigating my options.
Also, what sort of price should I be looking at to have a suit tailored?

How much were you going to spend on an Alpinestars suit? They make budget gear as well as the good stuff too.

I was eying the MX-1 suit for $1.4k US.. so I would be expecting to pay over $2k for it..

You should go close to getting into a top grade custom made suit for that money I would think.
I know you could get a suit for less but most of the you get what you pay for.

We use 1.4mm A grade cowhide (the best we can buy), treated in skin friendly processes, the leather softens up very quickly and after that process they are very soft and more comfortable. I know alot of brands have soft comfy leather to start with and to be honest I dont know how they achieve it, however based on our product performance on and off the track im reluctant to change anything in this regard.

Tanners oil perhaps? I gave your pants 3 applications with this and they certainly softened.
There is also www.tigerangel.com.au
I have just ordered a set from them, will be about the same price as you say for your alpinestars. I have a similar problem, tall and skinny. so nothing fits me properly off the shelf. Good luck.

I've got a Leda one piece suit that is about 35 or so years old. I believe it's the first one piece Dusty made It's still in pretty good condition after 16 years of speedway and other use. Been patched on the left knee a few times and the zip replaced once. The guy makes really good gear. (it cost me $100 new iback then, prices may have moved since)
