Hi all, looking for some advice here :)
My aging '84 GPZ750 is making some horrible noises and I think it's exhaust rather than engine. I've been told that the engine is making noises and the bottom end could be on it's way out but there's no evidence of that occurring (no metal bits in the oil, bike runs ok etc). I was told not to worry about it, it's a noisy Kwaka and to ride it till it dies. It seems to me that any noises the engine may be making is being amplified through the exhaust system. It's bloody embarrassing at times.
The sound is consistent with the same revs under load, and when idling it sounds like a metallic irregular "tock" noise. The noise comes and goes, it usually kicks in after 5 mins from starting from cold and then will come and go from there, if it gets really hot (stop/start riding in traffic etc) it will usually be ok, for a while then start up again. Sods law says any time I get someone to take a listen it stops.
It sounds to me like it's coming from the pipes running under the bike to the mufflers, although the mufflers themselves rattle when given a thump with a boot. The pipes are looking pretty rooted themselves, small rusty holes occurring in a few places and I tried covering one hole with an exhaust bandage ...
I am looking for the best cost effective option - moneys tight at the moment - and wonder if there's any muffler businesses in Tauranga you could recommend to give me options. Would it be best to patch up the existing or can they make up new headers and cans cheaper? I *could* attempt to get the pipes etc off the bike and take it to them - the config seems scarier than the CX500 exhaust set up was (GPZ has fairings, radiator and thousands of screws lol).
I guess at the back of my mind I don't want to replace the exhaust system to find the problem is not there.
Thanks for listening to the rant, any suggestions where / who to talk to?
Matt
