if not there should be.

Though I am the second most useless person in the world when it comes to actually USING tools, I do seem to like buying them. Its that magpie thing of oooohhhh errrr, bright, shiny, USEFUL stuff.

I have a bunch of multi tools, little socket sets, spanner sets etc that hardly ever get used but I buy on special or because of some perceived use.

I was in the local tool merchant (George Henry) the other day and they had these little socket sets on special: $39!. Ive had good luck with all this Bahco stuff Ive bought, and the justification was "Its just the right size to fit under the seat of the bike in case I need a T25 or M12 socket when I am out somewhere..."

Snap-on and Stahlwille in mine. My favourite tool is a set of 6" Snap-On reversible lockwire pliers. They get used 20-30 times a night, and are perfect.
Others are a 78-tooth stahlwille 1/4 drive ratchet, and a TengTools 1/4 drive ratchet though that is the smallest profile and finest tooth that I have ever seen - I use it all the time.

What he said. After 30-odd (very odd) years in the motor trade (and still pottering) I have to say you usually get what you pay for. DON'T buy cheap allen keys or cheap sockets, they bugger things and drive you to drink. Better to buy a few good tools than a pile of shitty ones. Work out what you really need and buy the best you can.

Tools that will see a lot of use need to be good quality. Good value for money in my tool box has been Sidchrome but the best has been the expensive SnapOn and Stahwillie (sp?) stuff. Koken has survived a lot of use too. Sidchrome sockets, for example: I've only broken a few in three and a half decades (of the 1/2" drive variety) and worn out a few of the more common sizes (in 3/8" drive) but SnapOn ring spanners are much nicer to use than Sidchrome, so hence a mish-mash of tools in the box. I could never afford to have SnapOn everything but if I won Lotto that's what I'd go for. KD also make some good stuff including ring compressors, oil filter removers and valve spring compressors.

For measuring, I like Mitutoyo instruments and their dial gauges are nice to use, smooth action.

I love tools. I have a fine collection of goodies. In fact I'm going to photograph the lot this weekend and keep a picture on file for insurance - I suspect they would doubt a claim if I ever needed to make one.

One thing slightly disturbs me is I have purchased a few throw-away power tools - $15 jobs from Bunnings that I purchased for a single job (ie impact drill to bore into concrete to hang a gate). Funny thing is they are all working very well some time later. I've noticed this trend with a lot of builders, plumbers etc too.
