View Full Version : How many fingers do you squeeze with?
I was riding a minute ago when I became conchious that I always squeeze the brake lever with only 2 fingers - index and middle.
How about the rest of you ? - here is a Poll.

Always have 2 fingers covering the brake lever - and they're the same 2 I use to swing on the anchors.

Wheres the option for "to busy riding to notice" back in the late 80s i remember talking to some fuck head in Kaikoura during a ride north, this guy was adamant it should be done a certain way because he saw the bike journos from Two Wheels did it that way.:laugh:personally i think use as many as you like as long as it works.

I always ride with my right middle finger on the brake lever. When I need to brake I use two and at times, for added stopping power, four.
My left hand doesn't do much in the way of breaking....

i was taught at a young age not to cover brakes with fingers.
i think i remember a post from the strange one who said the people who covered brakes at the rrrrrrs course were usually slower (please correct me if wrong thy strangeness)........

depends, two for slowly pulling up to the traffic lights, and four for when some retard decides that it would be a good idea to pull out in front of you from a stopstreet on a freshly resealed road :nono:
I feel like i have more control with four in an emergency, not braking any harder just more control.

Two is it for me, enough to give full brake performance and enough fingers around the grips to have a good hold on the bar.

2, I've tried four on the 929 and it made it do a unexpected stoppie and I've never tried it with 4 again... :eek5:
But you get better grip and better stopping power with four, you just got to be very aware at what you're doing!

Personally I use all four and I never cover my brakes - for a number of reasons:
1. Úsing all my fingers gives me more feel and better control with the brakes.
2. If I leave one to three fingers between the brake lever and the handlebar I can get them caught if I all of a sudden need to brake harder - also, if I was to hit anything like that, it's bye bye fingers.
3. Covering my brakes is the last thing I wanna do if I should panic/twitch or anything like it.
This is of course for road riding - I don't know anything about off-road, trials, etc.

Hang on while I go down to the garage .... Three, but I keep the little finger resting on the lever and bring it into play as the lever comes back.

26th May 2008, 22:54
I use all four, but then I have to in my old 1982 1100 and it doesn't do any harm on the others. What can do a lot can also do a little. I guess the designers would send us the message when or if its right to brake with one finger. They would then only put one finger length brake levers on bikes.

Being a fairly new rider I use four fingers. Don't think I'll be changing any time soon. I don't cover the lever, I'm either using it or not.

I agree with this, I tend to use 2 fingers at track day - bit faster and easier. I prefer to have all four on the roads as gives me a sense control for when a twat decides to pull out in front of me :)
I've got short fat sausage fingers, so two is plenty!
so what do ya wear beneath the boots to accomodiate the webbed feet??:msn-wink:
Toe.......its a webbed toe, well two actually...who was that famous actor on Rove the other night that has the same two webbed toes on the same foot as me?....Aston Kulsher?....Demi Moore's toy boy

This is why I do cover the brake with two fingers when riding on the road.
Faster reaction time, almost instant. In saying that I'm fortunate to have a bloody good set of brakes and if I use four fingers then I'd prolly end up in front of my bike

Haha, very true. I experienced this earlier this year with the very 'grabby' (or was it just my overconfident four fingers :P) Brembos on the RS.

I used to be a "four" but now I'm a "two". Covering all the time while on the road.
Modern brakes, instead of '80's vintage, help...
While filtering I try to keep four covering...

I cover with two. Then again I have a later model harley and anymore and I feel like I'm snatching at the brakes. For me it allows for a safer braking with less chance for lockup.

I use two and don't cover, unless I'm filtering when I'll cover with one.
My brakes are pretty sharp and I've had a couple of "oh shit!" moments while filtering when I've hit the picks hard with two fingers and momentarily locked the front. Out of traffic it's less of an issue as 99% of the time there's enough space to steer first, then brake.

I always cover with my index and middle fingers... It's a habit from racing and I think I react quicker then if I'm not covering it.
I use three .. I have little hands so I need all the pulling power I can get .. I find my pinkie doesn't really reach though :pinch:
I agree with you Joilet... My pinky and ring finger won't reach the lever any ways  unless I've already pulled it in quite a bit... Which would be in an emergency situation, So I'd use all four because my fingers are rather weak!

sitting here for ages trying to work out where the "5 Fingers" option was... then I realised... not only is my thumb not a finger, but thats kinda whats keeping the grip while the others are a pullin!

Generally four, but I have found myself using two if I'm doing a lot of gear changing under brakes.

Many moons ago, I used to use none (0).
Then I migrated to four (4).
However (but!) on my last few bikes, two (2) is sufficient. The last time I decided to use four was bedding in the front pads on the FahrtSturm. After it dumped me on my head, I never did that again.
The End.

How does that equate to me not having a ring on? Do rings make your fingers longer  Don't forget the brake lever is on the right side :P and no.. I don't wear rings on my right hand, used to... But then I grew out of the ring I had since I was 8 :(

I prefer to finger with all 4.
means the back can come off the ground and the bike wont fall over.
Squeeze the brake with two fingers during the normal course of riding
Use the lot when I really have to.
Wave to other motorists with one :finger:
Usually shortly following a using the lot episode

Depends on the bike. My old ZXR250 was much easier to haul up hard with all four. On the CBR one is really enough but two gives me way more feel.
First thing I test when getting on a new bike is work out how many fingers and how much squeeze on the brakes is required to get the bike stopped.

lol @ the tags firstly :2thumbsup
And lol @ the thread.
My finger usage changes depending on the situation really, if im in the city/round town etc ill usually cover the brake (front) but more so approaching uncontrolled intersections, I eye ball the driver (ignore the vehicle) & watch for body langauge, you would be suprised how much you can read if you don't do that already. After being taken out I now realise to the full extent what kind of awareness is required on a bike, "spidey sense" someone rightly said recently, but as far as im concerned if you don't cover your front brake around the city/town then good luck to you.
You cant buy back that 0.5 of a second it takes to reach
i think I will start covering the brakes too. had a newar miss last week so it may pay off in the future.
lol at thge tags too
