View Full Version : Should diesel vehicles be banned? - Poll

TOTO
26th May 2008, 20:45
I was riding behind quite a few Diesel 4WDs today and trucks. Had to keep overtaking because the smoke was unberable. I would be quite happy with no diesel vehicles on the road.

Here is a Poll - Vote.

No.... my work vehicle is a diesel....

but they should do that 0800 SMOKY thing again where you can report excessive smoke... I hate being behind a dunger that smokes!! chokes ya up!!

Not all diesels are bad... my ute doesnt smoke :)

diesels up over $1.70 now... eeeek... lucky I dont pay for it lol

On the basis of them exhausting more smoke ...no

On the basis the bloody great 4WD's seem to get parked on the corners of intersections and cause you to have to edge into the middle of the road just to see whats coming ....yes! :oi-grr:

Another pole,Another pole plz

these new diesels today they have them fairly good, they don't smoke anymore. i'd imagine an old motor that has'nt been serviced should be kicked off the road.

gotta say no to that one.
the misus drives a 4x4 diesel wagon.
can't afford a v8 anymore.

The diesel in this country is SHIT quality.

Ride over in europe or similar and you'd see a hooooooooooje difference.

It always gets me that buses are so "good" but they put out 100x more visible pollutants - that shit can't be good for your lungs.

No.

Diesels are fudging useful.

But everything to it's place.

And unfortunately the place a lot of diesels should be going is straight for a tune-up.

No they shouldn't be banned but failure to service injectors at appropriate intevals should result in mechanical disablement. Oh yeah, and fuel tank overflows should go into a collector bottle not onto the road.

Diesels make excellent tow vehicles, and there is nothing wrong with a modern well serviced diesel.

Any smoking vehicle should be kicked off the road, I have seen a heap of smokey petrols lately that should be failing a WOF.

I cant wait for deisel bikes to get more popular. Imagine that for a commuter bike, you would save so much!

You obviously arnt familiar with Road User Charges, the govt all ways gets its tax and just because it is cheaper at the pump doesnt mean that they are cheaper to run.

Modern deisels are highly efficent, and as long as they are serviced regulary they are fine (reminds me to go book in a service for the ute)

Its not the diesels that need banning but the owners for not being a responsible owner and keeping them tuned (diesel pump, injectors and clean oil)

If i start seeing smoke in my mirrors I run a bottle of injector cleaner, injectors have been done.

Now lets get serious here.... should we ban blowhard drifting boy racer homo's?

The more Diesel's on the road the better.
Especially if the Police have them issued to them.
Think about it.
Diesel Cage verses Bike?
Who is going to get out of the trouble spot faster?
yeap more diesels, more fuel availabile for bikes.
Put all the cagers into busses and trains, leave to roads to us . Yeah!

It's only old crappy diesel engines that are a problem.

All new diesels (TDI, etc.) observe modern emission standards. Diesel engines are still one of the most efficient (if indeed not the most efficient) engine design to date. There is no viable alternative...

No, diesels should not be banned.

Hinny
27th May 2008, 00:23
Diesels might put out more particulates but their gas emissions are not as bad as those from petrol engines.

Well said Dangerous - ban those little tossers. As far as the trucks etc go, I have had a few days riding to work where I felt sick after being fumed out on the way down the motorway.

It seems some of these new diesel cars are pretty "clean" compared to older ones. Not sure though of the benefits once you pay for RUC on top of the fuel then add in the high cost of servicing a diesel car.. I wonder if they really are worth it in the end.

Hey Toto! Do you write the Stuff polls? Because they're about as well thought out as this one.

007XX
27th May 2008, 09:30
What should be banned are morons with diesels not looking after them properly...

007XY has got a system going on his Series 80 Landcruiser which injects a small amount of LPG into the burning chamber of the diesel (or somewhat...gawd knows, I'm a chick alright!), which means he gets more boost (:Punk:), and the diesel burns a lot better, reducing the emissions of his vehicle :niceone:

Being an engineer, and very conscious of the environment (without being a tree hugger), he is always making sure things run smoothly. He's also considering getting his whole system transferred to LPG. Given how much the price of fuel is getting to be, it'll be worth the change over.

BAN THEM! They create diesel spills on the road!

OK this is a bit off topic but.... Srsly WTF is a diesel???? Some says "Aah the diesel got me! I binned" etc but.... I don't know if I've even seen it! WTF is a diesel!

I dunno which is worse - a badly maintained diesel, or a crapped-out petrol engine burning heaps of oil. Either way, I *hate* following them. But ban diesels? No.
Modern, well-maintained diesel-engined vehicles are actually a very sensible solution for NZ.

How do you think your petrol gets to the pumps? Getting towed in a tanker trailer by some pimply faced school leaver in a $300 323 with $1500 worth of wheels? No, it's brought to you courtesy of diesel. Oh and plus I have a diesel ute so of course I'm pro diesel!

In Europe, some companies now make and sell more Diesel powered cars than petrol powered, and the new high performance diesels are capable of outperforming their petrol equivalents.

Euro diesels, I was in Vienna a few weeks ago. I think there was a even split petrol/diesel amongst the cars, maybe even higher in favour of diesel.

Running a diesel cant be that cheap now, diesel use to be about half the price of petrol now only a few cents behind, poor diesel owners cant afford to do servicing I supose!

Bloody diesel servicing costs are a mith, christ they go for ever, but it is importent to have fresh oil, as oil dilutes down with diesel... hell if anything its cheaper, not like ya hev to replace the spark plugs is it

BAN THEM! They create diesel spills on the road!

Sorry, but they don't.
Humans ignoring the pump auto shutoff, topping off the tanks and filling up the designed expansion space in the tank cause spills.
I had to politely ask my local Caltex operator to not do it.
