View Full Version : Deano's VMCC Round I

Deano
27th May 2008, 10:08
A few of us had rented a house for the weekend - it worked out at $60 each person - much better than a motel and it had it's own natural thermal 'plunge' pool. Luke (Driftn) and I booked the house on this merit alone.

The only downside was that my 8 month old son had to sleep in the same room as Nikki and I - and he was very unsettled both nights.

So, it was a very tired Deano who rocked up to the track Sunday morning. The upside was that we were there just after 7.00am, so we had plenty of time to set up and get ourselves sorted.

Qualifying.

Our pit garage just happened to be right beside the dummy grid, so I was able to wait the third call before lining up with the rest of the bikes. I also got the 'holeshot' leaving the pits and decided this was a good opportunity to get a quick qualifying time on a clear track. The only problem was that my enthusiasm got the better of me and as it had been a while since I had been on the Taupo track, I totally stuffed up turn 4 (cresting right hander) and promptly ran straight off the track.

Thankfully I didn't drop it though and rejoined the field mid pack. Not a very good start !!

Qualified in 5th place in pro twin, and 8th on the grid (Pro Twins and Superlites run at the same time)

Race 1

The new lights used to start the race are awesome, but caught more than a few riders out. This helped me to get a bit of a jump on a couple who had false started and had to stop, then start again.

I got in behind Jarrod Wintle and was gaining on him over the first 2 laps. He was holding me up in a few places and I decided to try my luck and go round the outside of him at the inside hairpin. This didn't work at all and the rider behind me slipped up the inside. I couldn't regain the position and finished
4th.
Jarrod was my biggest rival in Post Classic Junior last year, so I know I can beat him but I think I still need a bit more time to get to grips with the SV. It was a promising start to my Pro Twin season though.

Race 2

I got an even better start (nearly looped it off the line) and again slotted in behind Jarrod. This time I was unable to gain on him - a rider ran off in front of me and I thought that I might collect him on his way off the track, but thankfully missed. Jarrod opened up a gap and I just couldn't reel him in.
Finished 4th again.

I was really aiming for a podium, so I will have to lift my game a bit for the next round at Manfeild.

Thanks heaps to the Anglo American Club guys who helped out in the pits, Luke for transporting the bikes to the track, Firestone/Bridgestone for the fuel, Teng Tools (the tools are great) and Zany Zeus.

Choice write-up Deano. That Jandle Wintle can be a tricky bugger I hear. It will be good seeing how this battle develops over the season. Just to make things more interesting, why don't we arrange for the loser of said battle to sell his bike cheeply to a certain keen bald-man? I can get the papers drawn up tomorrow.

"Binty" Wintle

 I take it you mean "beat you" on the track right. This is a different deal than the "beat me and I will give you a cornering tip" deal?
By the time I beat you on the track SVs will be in a classic class.

I dont know wether to put my money on Binty (cos he lent me his bike to finish the nationals & is an all round good bloke), Or Deanno , cos he can organize me a favor or two at the next hill climb, Or Clive - cos maintaining a strong political connection within the club pays dividends.........

Binty gets my vote & I will start him on the appropriate diet (BP chilli & pork pies) , physical training (sex) - (not with me) & on track tutorial. If none of this works - then he can simply borrow my spare engine...................As power will outweigh any talent deficiency (as I have proved unequivocally).

Roadracing old fart , - maybe you provide Deanno with some wisdom & trickery ?.

 Bastard. Sprayed my tea on the keyboard. The only flaw in your plan is that you have overlooked the superior performance properties of the BP buttered chicken pies. I know what you mean about your engine too. If only I had 120 hp.
