Apparently driving a cage to work is really expensive.

"Porirua workers are paying more than $120 a week to run their cars into Wellington from Monday to Friday." - and I doubt that includes $50 a week to park the bastard too.
"living in Wairarapa and commuting by car ... costs of almost $300 a week."
Ahhhhh. Diddums.

Don't forget that those figures take into account running costs, including depreciation. Some of those costs apply to a vehicle wether you use it for commuting or not, so it's not a straight comparison. (It may be better, economically to utilise your car fully by using it to commute as well as shopping etc).
I think you'd find that taking the bike in wouldn't be that cheap if you factored in your all up running costs.
The other factor that's not looked at is the time taken to commute. I can get to work in 10-15 minutes on the bike (Newlandsish to Petone), whereas I'd need to take a bus and train (if they connect), at the same cost per day as it would taking my bike for almost two weeks!

"As long as you can live with the unreliability, walks at either end, and other inconveniences ... it's a no-brainer," Mr Kiernan said.
 Nice little jab at public transport whilst trying to seem as though they support it.

Spot on. Since getting a bike and riding it to work whenever possible instead of the car. I have saved money, at the last count over $1300.00 in six months. Fuel/parking all the associated costs.
Plus the times I have had to take the car in instead of the bike, I am left with a drudge feeling. The trip in is not as much fun, and I don;t arrive at work with the same levels of energy as Iwould if I had taken the bike in...:)
Plus it's brilliant to ride past other workmates as they sit in the cars, in the minor little traffic flow problems the center of Welly encounters each and every day at peak time....:)

I Only Get Slightly More Than 300 A Week :o - Spendable Money That Is.
Pulled up at the pumps the other day (BP), and was opposite a guy with one of the HUGE Dodge Ram trucks (fucken cool truck BTW).
Hes filling, and filling, and filling.
I pull up, take off helmet, gloves, turn off bike.
Hes still filling, and filling and filling.
I take from empty to full in $26 dollars (paid at pump), and start getting ready to leave.
Hes still filling and filling....
I'm looking at the truck and (being the nice guy I am) say "nice truck mate"
He looks at the bike, looks at the $$$$ on the pump and goes "yeah - wanna swap?"
I don't feel sorry for cages - but I absolutely piss myself laughing at guys driving huge ass things like that.
