I was working in Sydney in 1987, when they had their "Official Parade" and welcome home. Something sorely missing when the Vet's returned from Vietnam.
The Vet's I spoke with were over the moon to have that day, finally.

One guy (according to the media at the time) had returned home after combat, stayed the night with his family and then disappeared never to be heard of again... until he came out of the shadows for that parade.


Why NZ has taken so long to say "Thanks, and sorry", goodness only knows.
They bloody well deserve it.

Agreed. Interesting though that the ''great pacifist of our time'' aka Frankensteins sister chose election year to make such an apology. Interesting also that she would have been one of those protestors at the time of that war decrying the servicemen.
The biggest problem with Vietnam was that General Westmoreland wasnt given the tools to finish the job as the war was fought on television. I have absolutely no sympathy for the communists.

I was not in Australia when the 'Welcome Home' to the Vietnam Veterans was held in 1988 there. So today, I am very thankful for the opportunity to have participated in the march and attend the ceremony at Parliament House.

Arrived at the Civic Square in my riding gear and reporter Emma Jollap [sic] from TV3 asked the digger carrying the Aussie flag and me for interviews.

1969 seems many moons ago, but yesterday listening to the dates (KIA) of each of thirty seven Kiwi servicemen I could not help but reflect where I was that year: Perth, Sydney, Sea, Sunda Strait (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Sunda_strait_map_v3.png) , then off Singapore, then into South Vietnam to unload military equipment and disembark numerous soldiers from a Royal Australian Regiment that joined the ship in Brisbane, then embark numerous more from a returning Royal Australian Regiment shipping them back to Fremantle and Port Adelaide. Listening to the dates took us back there immediately....Lest We Forget.
