Hawkwind aren't a rock band? Eh?

Some that haven't yet had a mention: Sabbath, ZZTop, Motorhead, Mudhoney, Faith No More.

That is a particularly awesome version of that song.... they seemed to pick up an extra guitar player from somewhere?

I presume you've heard of drive by truckers? they are often unfairly compared to LS: being from the south, and a five person lineup with three guitars: advantages over LS are:

1. still alive; and

2. still touring.

Here's a link to an awesome early ish song of theirs called "Sink Hole"

I was looking for Outfit but can't find it on youtube.

yup, got drive by truckers too...The Dirty South is the album I have...they are real good too

I get sick of the fact that the only song to get airplay on the radio by LS seems to be sweet home alabama, whereas they put out some real good ones...Free Bird rocks, and Simple Man is fantastic too

Half the time I never know who the band is anyway, I just know when I like a song.

Then when I say "who's singing this, then...?" people look at me in horror/scorn and tell me.

It is to my shame that having been drinking with the co-writer of Motorhead's Iron Horses for several years (not Lemmy, I hasten to add) - I had never heard the song until about 9 months ago *blush* ... I dare not admit it to him, LOL

Other than that: I could probably recognise songs from most of the above, particularly Pink Floyd, Led Zep, the Stones, Status Quo, Hendrix, early Queen (anything before News of the World), several American bands noted above (Doobies, Lynyrd, ZZ Top) ... and recently I have discovered I quite like the Scorpions.
