View Full Version : Do you acknowledge/wave at other bike riders?
alanzs
31st May 2008, 19:01
Having been born and raised on the freeways of Lost Angeles it was a fairly common custom to waive or at least nod at other bike riders. This was especially true when out on roads less traveled.
Having been here in NZ for years, I still do this, but almost nobody does it back, though a few will. I always figured their is a certain kinship amongst riders, as we are all on two wheels, sharing the same fun, and risks.
So, do you acknowledge other bike riders?

As long as it doesnt look remotely Harleyish i generally give a wave, years (and years) ago used to give everybody on a bike a wave as for many of us it was the done thing but then along came 55 year old divorcees on Harleys and it seems the usual pleasantries were forgotton, mind you i dont blame em,got an image to maintain.

I didn't want to mention that the Hardley Ableson riders never, ever waved, but I figured it was because they were too afraid to take their hands off the tassled bars. Never thought about it being their image; vest wearing and wearing all that matching HD outfit crap. But then 0-100 in three minutes ain't bad for farm machinery technology!:stupid:

yep pretty much wave or nod to everyone on two wheels, except when not able to due to concentrating on cornering

Funny shit.
When I was on my Jappa everyone waved apart from those on cruisers, When I'm on my HD I'm ignored, Apart from some riding Jap copies who become quite animated trying to get the wave thing going.
Personally, I don't give a flying fuck, I don't return many waves no matter what I'm riding, Does that make me a wanker?, Probably in some peoples minds, though the feeling isn't mutual.
The wave to me is meaningless
I'll give anyone the time of day when stopped, But when I'm riding, fuck it, I'm riding.

Being new(ish) in the saddle I gotta say I noticed within the first few days of riding even just locally that other riders were tipping their lids or lifting a hand as I went past. I started to return the gesture and now it is habitual... I have noticed tho (being a cruiser rider) that all cruiser riders I have waved / nodded to have returned the gesture, but sports / rocket riders dont seem to be as consistant... is there a bit of a us and them mentality between the two groups??? :dodge:

I think the official wave should be done with the foot, Lift it slightly from the peg and wiggle as you approach another bike.
Subtle enough that it won't be recognized or even noticed by anyone not familiar with it.
Lmfao.
Next time I have my helmet camera hooked up I'm going to do big goofy waves to everyone on bikes, and upload the results to youtube. And if I have time, pull up beside some jappas, and ask em if they feel like wankers riding them things.

Yes.
Each side thinks the other ones are stuck up cunts.
I went to house warming once and a lot of people there rode hogs. The conversations would abrubtly end when they found out I rode a sports bike.
I don't have a problem with Harleys. I have a problem with most of the owners...

First time I rode on the open road I had riders wave to me. I thought it was so cool to have strangers wave to me just because I was on a bike.. Been driving a car for fuck knows how many years and never once has a stranger waved to me on the way by. Had the odd one flip me the bird and had occasion to do the same thing myself from time to time but never a comrade type wave. I don't care what sort of bike they are riding they get a wave and if I don't get one back well it's just a case of fuck you.:finger:
I still want to know what that dude in the vid on one of the other waving threads meant by his "Asian wave" - I could practice doing it to gijoe1313 at school. Just like the secret masonic handshake or something.
Princess - I'm up here in Asia and the 'Asian wave' in my opinion is really a 'fend' = arm out, palm down, dip the palm a few times towards the road, means "let me pass, make way, do not collide with me" :innocent:

I first noticed other riders waving at me when I rode out to Riversdale a week after getting the new bike - problem was I was too scared to move anything to wave back! Things are more relaxed now and I give a quick wave to all except on the short ride to and from work (wrong headspace), some riders get right into their wave I've noticed - damn near a high five!
I wave to Harleys after talking to a friend who said he used to wave to everyone but Jap riders didn't wave back so now he waits until a Jap rider waves then returns the gesture. It appears there is some kind of Jap bike snobbery towards cruisers.

I always try and give a wave, salute fellow 2 wheeled travellers. Nodding is a little difficult to observe when you're getting buffeted around by the wind at 100kph so seems a little pointless.

Went against the traffic around the coro loop a couple of weeks ago. ie anticlockwise, must have passed 400 bikes, all sorts harleys, aprilias, moto guzzis, all the jap stuff, I would say 75% would have waved, I guess most of them were Jaffa's I say thats a bloody good percentage.
Those that dont wave who gives a rats arse. Some people are friendly guys & girls, others are just mean sonna of a bitches that have a huge chip on their shoulders to start with, thats life get over it, thats their problem, don't let it become yours.
When I go for a daily walk I say hi to everyone I pass, 95% say hi back.
I recently went for awalk with my Pommie uncle who was out here on a holiday. He was astounded that everyone greeted each other on a walk, through the park, I said thats what you do in NZ, he replied we dont often do that in England. I said that's the friendly nature of NZers, he agreed.
Lets not end up like the Poms, it starts and continues by waving to your biking comrades.

back a few years ago seems like everyone on a bike waved or acknowledged each other in some way, then when the Harley thing really took off I noticed that the majority of them didn't wave so now I just ignore them unless they wave first. Some BMW riders can be a bit snooty too...
Probably just a sign of the times, people seem to not be so friendly generally these days...

in my experience, as a learner you dont get acknowledged by many at all. i find a lot of the old school bikers will 9 times out of 10 nod my ways if im on my gn250 but no-one else seems to acknowledge me at all except for the scooter patrol when im on the rally travelling through town or where ever i may be.
i think its kinda harsh :oi-grr: but at the end of the day i ride because i love it not because i want to be acknoweledged for it. im not fussed what other people think as long as im enjoying the ride :niceone:

No one in Aussie seems to do it either yet very friendly when you pull up at a cafe and riders are there.

Veerrry interesting - I am the recipient of few waves, particularly from sports bike riders. But this morning I was getting waves and nods from every bike that went past! So what did I do differently? - I wasn't on my usual dirt type bike, but on a road bike....not what you would call a sports bike, but it has lowish bars and a small sports/bikini fairing.I still don't know why sports bikes don't wave at me on a dirt bike (and of course they all insist they wave at all bikes),but this is a sure confirmation to me.

I wave on open road mainly.
Harley riders I don't wanna see them fall off from letting go of the ape hangers to wave

Yer, when I get a set of ape-hangers I'll see if it's still worth waving to other riders.
In the meantime I will carry on waving (with the 'speshul KB wiave').

normally pick a Harley rider from a sports rider a mile off, even in the dark, headlights give it away, but find HD riders will NOT acknowledge Jappas.Iv'e been on bikes for 20 years plus but it still hasn't changed.I'd bet alot of them Harley riders and dreaded Jappa pilots would be awesome to have a beer with. After all, were both on 2 wheels aye!

hehehe - you should've seen the looks on some faces when the ex and I would wave to Harley Riders. Their hand would go up, their faces all expectant and happy, and once the got past the Electroglide screen and big spotlights they'd realise they'd waved at a GOLDWING rider!!! Nooooooo!!!!!
Twas fabulous!

back a few years ago seems like everyone on a bike waved or acknowledged each other in some way, then when the Harley thing really took off I noticed that the majority of them didn't wave so now I just ignore them unless they wave first. Some BMW riders can be a bit snooty too...
Probably just a sign of the times, people seem to not be so friendly generally these days...
then again, maybe I'm just getting old and cynical...
Sure you don't just delegate that job to the driver of your pilot vehicle?

Id agree with bik3rchik that sports bikers almost never give a nod back, prolly because theyre too scared to take their hand off their overpowered suicide on wheels:innocent:.. especially Ducati riders.. as compared to a cruiser rider who almost always acnowledge a nod or a wave.. :scooter::rockon:
Well that's the last f$#@ing VX I ever wave to!!!

Many clever minds have spent many hours debating an appropriate wave to help KBers recognise each other on the road.
We haven't yet come up with the definitive wave but your input would be very much appreciated Blossom.
Maybe we need to set up a committee.
