View Full Version : Akaroa for the night on the 5th Feb

Ms Piggy
30th December 2004, 14:17
Hey All you Southern Bikers,
I'm renting a house for 1 night on the 5th of Feb in Akaroa. As yet I'm not sure of how many rooms or beds it has but, I think it's reasonably sized.

Sooooooo, how many of you would be interested in a bit of a gathering? Just putting it out there b/c I'll be riding over that day and staying there that night regardless of if anyone else does or not.

Cheers CSL

Are you asking if anyone can stay in the house with you? If so, I might be interested, otherwise I can't afford a place of my own :S (I just bought a big ass garage/shed for my bike). Akaroa, thats North Island? Whats the occasion?

What I really want to do is organise another ride up to auckland, and go see the autobahn, and surrounding roads :scooter:

Sounds like it could be fun.
But with that many m/cylists in one house, that could be fatal to the house. HEHE :2thumbsup
Sorry but..Where is it??

You boys will need to get on the ferry and ride to Christchurch to get to Akaroa.

I possibly might be able to go (50/50)

I am a slow driver with a slow bike (I have no need to compensate for other things), but it is not that far anyway.

From wikipedia.org

Akaroa is a town on Banks Peninsula in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is 82 kilometres by road from Christchurch, and is the terminus of State Highway 75.

According to the March 2001 New Zealand census of population and dwellings, the permanent population was 576, a decrease of 69 since 1996. The town has a high (31%) ratio of residents aged over 65 years.

Set on a beautiful, sheltered harbour and overlooked by craggy volcanic hills, Akaroa is a popular resort town. In summer the temporary population can reach 7000 which places stress on the water supply which is entirely dependent upon rainfall on the hills.

Although sailors from the hastily-despatched HMS Britomart proclaimed British sovereignty over the South Island at Akaroa in 1840, the area was settled that same year by French settlers who had intended to establish a colony. The area still has a French influence, reflected in many local placenames.

Many Hector's Dolphins may be found in the harbour, and 'swim with the dolphins' boat tours are a major tourist attraction.

I'm inviting anyone who would like to come. It's only costing $50- and from what I understand it's a good sized place, Kickaha & I will be there and I thought a few others may want to pop over for the night.

Sorry luv it's in the Mainland, hence why I was drawing it to the attention of Souther riders.

The missus and I are always keen for a quick trip over to Akaroa... will make for a damn busy week, Akaroa on the 5th and then probably down to 12 mile on the 8th/9th... good thing I got some new rubber before xmas :)
Do we need to bring anything other than sleeping bags and drinks ?

ok, now I know I am going completely mad.... for some really fecked up reason I was sure that either the date for the ride was 5th of January or that we were in the start of February, not sure which but either way it does not bode well for my mental state or my reading ability [thinks to himself that perhap he shouldn't me admitting to this slip in sanity]. Anyway, glad that I didn't miss out on a trip to Akaroa today... might just have to head over there tomorrow, maybe the madness has been brought on by too little riding.

...to hear the details of the Akaroa place back from my cousin. I don't even know where exactly it is yet.

Just thought I'd let all interested parties know that it's definitely still happening and I reckon we could try for a BBQ and general drinking of liquid refereshments.

Ms Piggy
12th January 2005, 18:38
Ok here's some info on the house.

I'll be in ChCh on the 4th Feb, but I'm not too sure where would be a good central meeting point. Can 1 of you ChCh lot suggest somewhere?

Details about the house in Akaroa:

The house is two-storey “Colonial-style” approximately 125 years old. It sleeps 14 people (approx.) over five bedrooms (double and single beds and a child’s cot). It is fully furnished except for personal sheets/blankets/sleeping bags, which tenants need to bring. Some spare pillows are supplied but we recommend tenants bring their own pillows.

Bedroom 1: Double bed, single bed, child’s drop-side cot and mattress. Wardrobe. French doors open onto west-facing deck. Bedside cabinets

Bedroom 2: Two double beds; one single bed. Duchess & drawers. Bedside cabinets

Bedroom 3: Small room. Single bed. Bedside cabinet

Bedroom 4: Two single beds (can accommodate portable 3rd temporary bed provided by tenants). Bedside cabinet between beds.

Bedroom 5: Two single beds. Bedside cabinet between beds

Off-street carpark for 2 to 3 vehicles via lay-by off driveway shared with rear neighbour. No parking in driveway !!!.

There is a concrete block barbecue (charcoal or driftwood) & outdoor tables and chairs etc, with lots of grass (which is mowed by a local contractor). French doors from lounge and main bedroom open onto a west-facing deck. Clothes line. ‘Front lawn cricket’ is a popular pursuit.

Sounds pretty good aye! If you want to come and stay can you please PM me.

Also if everyone could possibly flick a couple of bucks my way per person :o Sorry to ask but, apparently if it's a larger group they ask for pay more. When I say a couple I do only mean say $2- each b/c there was originally only 2 of us going anyway.

Cheers CSL

So for the slower or guys or on smaller bikes you will have someone to

with comfort.
And I have been their before so if you are unsure, I can lead you

I get my licence on the 29th hopefully, well I'm going for it, and if I get it i'll be keen to head over...

Only problem is that I ride a 1978 Honda CG110, so it's not very fast, max speed is about 90.... I'll ride as hard as I can, but it's just a lack of power?

I'd be keen to stay over and have a couple of beers with some randoms, I'll see if I can get the carrier off my mate for the bike to put the sleeping bag on, although I fear that having luggage might slow me down a bit....

Anyone else on slow bikes?

I have got the Mrs as far as Chch, but looks as if I will be tagging along to Akaroa with y'all.
I will endeavour to be at the pub by 1130 cause any earlier means leaving Picton at "too bloody early for a Saturday".

I really wish I could join you guys, sounds like a blast! Work! Some times I feel like

I want to break free
I want to break free,
I want to break free from your lies,
you're so self satisfied, I don't need you
I've got to break free
God knows, god knows I want to break free

haha. I'll be thinking of you either on my long ride, or sitting at home if it's raining.

I followed Manuboy....err that should read Manu followed me (cos suzukis dont belong in frount :shake: back to the turn off to Gebbys pass were we were going to have a beer at the weetcheif, but Gav was the only bike to come pass in 20min so as I got a txt from SuzyQ I knew all was ok so I buggered off (have to go around to help manu replace a window..... makes me wounder why he befriended me when he is doing up their house and I'm a chippy :brick: Every one has checked in but Warren.... were are ya fella.... someone said you stayed in Akaroa, so thats cool.

Hey... good ride aye,
Hell yeh, great ride. It was hot as, so the tyres got nice and sticky, but not so hot that there was melted tar everywhere. Pretty much perfect conditions.
Highlights for me apart from meeting everyone:
Was about 500m ahead of most of the group after leaving Little River. Looked in rear vision mirror and saw some head lights coming around the corner in the distance, one pulls over into the right hand lane then disappears "Here comes Aaron!" Caught me about 3 seconds later (slight exageration)

Being chased by Manuboy up the hill.

Following Aarons mate (VTR1000) up the hill on the way back and watching him get his knee down with sparks flying everywhere. Beautiful to watch- looked like a real racer, not hanging off miles with his knee stuck miles out

Realising I could actually match his corner speed while he was getting his knee down (initial reaction was "Shit, he's got his knee down and he's hardly hanging off- I must be going too fast")

The weird sound effect I could hear when behind the VTR- it sounded like there was a third bike there, so much so that I kept checking my mirrors to see who it was.

Basically an awesome day. Can't wait to do it again!

Doesnt Waikato uni have a "job search" thing happening down there...

Or go and work at MacDon's or a garage/service station... once ya got a job (which is hard to get) and ya work there for a while then ya get references etc to help ya get work in the area that you want to work in.

All the best.

Warren.... do I get the feeling yesterday when I rocked up a tad late
.

So you were late because your bikes so slow? :shake:

Stevo turned up later and became chief cook and bought enough steak along for us to have it for tea and breakfast :niceone: he also seemed intent on getting Warren hammered insisting on him having few of his bourbon and cokes

When we left we turned off just out of Akaroa and road around the summit road to the hilltop, climbng up the hill stuck behind a truck and with limited visibilty due to the fog

Once at the top we had climbed above it but we were in and out of it most of the way around to the hilltop, bit of grit and a few damp patches and it's a narrow little goat track, got back to Tai Tapu and gassed up with Stevo heading off to the classic car meeting at Ruapuna and Warren turning off a bit further up the road

Escorted Cathy out the old West Coast Road and then we swapped bikes for a litle bit,the CB250RS was interesting to ride feeling like a bigger version of my Bucket and Cathy saying it was a novelty not to have to change down for every little elevation change in the road or head wind,we carried on down the road until we got to the turn off to the Waimak Gorge, where we said our goodbyes and I headed back off home

Got a txt from her later saying she'd reached Hokitika and after forgetting to gas up at Arthurs she made Kumara with 225km showing (normally fills up about 180km)and she was feeling pretty stuffed

Yeh, it was really strange. It basically sounded like there was another inline 4 behind me. I could still hear the FZR engine and the VTR clear as, but it sounded like there was another one as well. Glad I'm not the only one who heard it.
