View Full Version : Rossi accepts Cliffhanger Challenge

:bleh:Bullshit obviously.
However while talking shit with AJ Turbo (as you do) the other night, we wondered what a riding God like Rossi would make of the Cliffhanger. On identical machinery, how much quicker would he be than our current ruler, King Jay Lawrence? Would Jay's familiarity with the hill be enough of an advantage? Would Mr Rossi rock up, and be so full of highly compressed motorcycling ability, that he could knock out competitive times after the first couple of runs, or would he have as much trouble remembering the course as other first timers? Would he be bothered by the gravel on the corners?
I can only assume that guys like Rossi would tear it to pieces, but honestly don't know. How much faster is it humanly possible to get up there?

In the end. People like Rossi will be fast no matter what they are on and where they are.
But would still be interesting to see.

I reckon, but how much faster? Could we imagine 10 seconds on his first day?

Who knows, the price to pay of an off on a track is usually way more acceptable a risk than in an event like a hillclimb, faced with trees cliffs etc ones own perception of self preservation may well factor.Ive got some saved videos, pics of a guy i know in England whos done very well in hillclimb events on a very modified Tls and as much as i like riding quick on such roads i gotta say this guys got balls of steel, wet road and willow trees everywhere.

I think after rossi on his last three seconds leave world champ Casey stoner i think he would leave the fastest time behind and crack an un imaginable, it would be the best to see tho!
After all he is the KING ON ROAD!

I would be putting Money On Jay lawerence to kick his arse, Jay would be faster than a track glory boy like Rossi. Thats just my opinion.
besides Rossi would be to scared of upsetting his contractual obligations and upsetting his million dollar income stream to get down and dirty on a road race with da boyz !!

I'd be more interested to see what kind of times Jay could do on a GP circuit on Rossi or Stoner's current racebikes.

1st. Rossi would look at the course and then the organisers as if they had two heads if asked to ride it. It simply aint his scene.

2nd. If he was somhow enticed to ride there, it'd depend on the bike he was riding as to how he'd do. Chuck him in a WRX and I'm sure he'd have a shot, albeit 30 seconds down on Jay.

3rd. Jay hasn't got famliararity with the course, no one does. It's a road that you simply can not practice and is constantly changing. I'd imagine young Jay racer is also the first to admit that he's lucky Drew was riding a borrowed, un set up, fairingless, spaghetti slurper of a machine that he practically hadn't even seen before the meeting. Had he spent some time and a little money on the Triple 9, I imagine the results would have been far different.

Jay is the most spectacular rider that hill's yet seen, Drew's the quickest. For my mind.

Brotherly bias has nothing to do with it. Drew. I want my fifty bucks

Correct if wrong but didn't Brian Bernard set a record time the first run up there ??

:yes:Of course this has as much chance of happening as Jessica Alba asking to be my second wife. In my fantasy world this is exactly the sort of thing that Rossi would like to give a lunge. Grass-roots racing for the sheer joy of it and bragging rights.

I'd be more interested to see what kind of times Jay could do on a GP circuit on Rossi or Stoner's current racebikes.

True that.

Jay does have familiarity with the course in as much as he knows the corners, reference points, apexs etc. Heaps of other stuff on the Hill changes as you say, but it's still essential knowledge.
This isn't a thread about whether Jay or Drew is faster or who should have won the last Cliffhanger. On the day it could have been either of them and for the purposes of this thread it could be either. I just wonder if the local knowledge and the opportunity to give a multiple world champion the learn, would be enough to give them a fighting chance. I have absolutely no reference points for the comparison and would love to see what would happen.

That would be good to know. I do suspect that at the top level (locals included) fast is fast, and they learn a course quickly.

Yeah I believe so, but (thinking hard to remember the numbers) jay did take 6 seconds off it on a 600cc bike and Brian did it on a 1000cc.
As for Drew I would have loved to have seen him there with a top perfomring bike (he had issues on the 999) that would have made a great spectacle of racing Drew vs Jay, maybe next year.

ps a few more KB members should be making the pilgrimage to the event btw

Remembering though it was B Bernards first time up there at speed . Mate was quicker on his R6 than his R1 up there too .Have followed Deno & Jimb600
up there along time back now on my K3 1000 was pretty hard work from never been on the road before . Not abit of road I would like to get it wrong on at all . Hats of to thoughs that race there :2thumbsup

we wondered what a riding God like Rossi would make of the Cliffhanger.
He would hand everyone their arses.

I used to sail semi-seriously. I say "semi" because I was kinda shit at it and this is my out. Anyway, our club had a couple of really good chicks in it - one had won the Laser europeans a couple of times and one was a 'proper' Olympic hopeful. As a consequence between them they'd know other Olympic hopefuls, world champions etc and they'd come down to our nice cute club for a little Sunday afternoon race from time to time.

Now, we *had* these bastards. They bought their old boats, their old sails, and they generally speaking failed to take it at all seriously. To make matters worse we had challenging courses (top level sailing races are held around just three marks) around difficult 'local knowledge' terrain - moving mudbanks, large wind shadows from trees on the shore, lumps of water where the tide was either stopped or flowing in the opposite direction - they stood no chance.

So it goes without saying that whenever one of these Olympic types showed up, they handed us our arses. Occasionally one would get lost, go off on completely the wrong course, realise his mistake, have to sail all the way back, and beat us witless anyway.

My point is that people at the top of a sport ... you might think that the best locals would be able to use their superior local knowledge and lack of desire to live to beat them... But no. No offence to Jay who is clearly a far better rider than me, but I'm sure this applies to all sports and each of us. They're just much better than you think.

Methinks he'd obliterate us. We might be fast, and others might think we're stupid, but Rossi has a gift for riding the wheels off his bike.

Even on the bike I rode, he'd smoke us!

If he'd ride, and we can certainly say, he wouldn't.

Were this kinda thing his bag, he'd be cleaning up the Isle of Man field yearly.

Yarp. That's what I think too. I'm less confident about the IOMTT. That event is off the map with the size of the course and subtleties to learn. There seems to be another layer of skill required as well as the usual racing skills.

Hmmmm, dunno 'bout that one, I'm not disagreeing, i'm just not convinced.
It's one thing getting familar with 6 odd (and I do mean "odd") k's of road, it's another learning 50-ish k's. I look at guys like Dave Jefferies and Joey Dunlop in his later years, neither of them were capable of running at the front at a BSB event yet they were stellar on The Isle. Sheer outright speed is blunted when you are tipping into a series of blind corners.
Given a couple of years he might but first up I can't see it.
Without an FIM approved run-off area in sight the IOM is a test of nerve as much as skill so it would be interesting to see.

I reckon guys that can make a good living at the sharp end on a circuit probably dont want to risk themselves by pushing 100% on a road circuit. Theres no way in my mind if you were to put rossi etc with a 100% commited mind set in to race the IOM no one would beat him. Theres prob lots to learn and differences on a road coarse but you cant beat that sort of ability

I can't believe people think local lads would beat the worlds greatest ever motorcycle racer up that hill... What are you people on????!! Have you been out of your province and seen world level riders race?
What, somehow our boys have the biggest balls or something? What a joke - No one wants to die - racers tend to find their limit and ride to it. Anyone noticed Rossi's limit?

Rossi might do it for fun, he came out here and drove a rally car for fun !
The cliff hanger is GREAT FUN !!! I've done a couple ( so slow that Jay and Drew would have almost passed me if I'd started in front of them :-) The top times were posted by racers and as far as I am aware the crashes were by non racers ( the first time I did it I almost crashed, I've done 1 race in clubman's B so I should be OK now :-)
The fast guys have a good idea of the limits and push them more on the track (where the consequences are less severe) than on the hill. I suspect Rossi would be the same but his limits would be a little further. He can get an F1 car to lap within a second of Schumacher, he is a handy rally driver and was go-cart champ as a kid, he's the only person to win back to back GP's on bikes from different manufacturers, he's won 90 Grand Pix races - like Super Gran "aye, there's nothin he canna doo"

Dunno about a 1.05, probably about 10% faster than the record i.e. 1.56 (!). It took Warren Turner 4 tries at the IoM to get a replica i.e. get within 110% of the top riders. When Wazza had the record up the hill he weighed close to 100kg, rode an '98 R6 with 105hp, and rode a motorbike once a year.
