View Full Version : Brass Monkey dilemma

This thread is about determination, dealer support and an efficient insurance company. Last Wednesday, a mate (Dave '07GSXR750) from Auckland, was on his way South to join us in Welington for our annual trip to the Brass Monkey. However, 50kms north of Masterton, he hit a brick that was sitting in the middle of a curve. This unfortunately badly damaged his front wheel and destroyed his rear wheel. He did stay on though. He found out who the local Suzuki dealer was, Dave Anderson Motorcycles in Masterton, called them. They immediately dispatched a vehicle to pick him up. New rims required, new wheel bearings and new tyres. A call to Suzuki NZ had the parts on the way immediately. Now to get hold of the Insurance Company (Vero). Photos were taken of the damage and sent to the assessor who okayed the repair. 23 hours after the incident Dave was back on the road again and managed to join us in Hokitika. A big thanks to Dave Anderson and his crew who really went the extra mile and to a very efficient insurance company that allowed things to happen when they needed to

Its good to hear that Vero and Dave Anderson Motor Cycles provide such great service. We usually only hear about peoples bad experiences and not often the good ones.

This does more good for Vero than any amount of hard sell advertising like in the AA thread.

Nice to see DA, Vero and Suzuki step up.

Were the whole wheels replaced or did they try and rebuild 'em?

Well done, nice outcome good post but what about the brick left in the road?

Police do not "seem" to pay enough attention to the crap that is being left all over our roads!

The state of the roads caused by other errant road users is a bloody disgrace.

Roads are contaminated with stock effluent from cows etc being driven on the road.

Trucks are dropping it everywhere, diesel spillages, firewood dropped and now, as in this thread, a bloody brick!

ACC charge us motorcyclists more and more but nothing seems to be done about the bastards that cause most of the problems that knock us off our bikes.

Two of my mates got their bikes written off , because of a diesel spill, just this week end.

Enough is enough. :angry2: C'mon Police, clean up our bloody roads. John.

Highly impressive work by both bike shop and insurance Co.
Always good to have one's faith reinstated from both.

Damn! That's awesome!! If ever anything like this happened to me, I would hope the same impressive service was afforded to me by the local bike shop, bike distributor and my insurance company.

That's impressive...:niceone:

Yip, he got the ferry Thursday night. Stayed in Picton. Arrived in Hokitika at 12.00 on Friday. He left for Auckland this morning. We were all very impressed with your service.

I'm quite sure Dave would have beaten the brick to a pulp. We travelled from Hokitika to Haast dodging stock effluent dropped by some lazy arsed truck driver. He could have pulled over anywhere and disposed of it. Afterall it is just grass shit.

As usual, had a fantastic ride. The BRASS ride is unique, and a challenge to any biker. As for sitting around a fire in an open paddock when its pissing down.....well its all just part of it. Roll on BRASS '09. 360 sleeps!!!!!

I met dave for the last couple of hours of his ride back to Akld. No sign of the bastard brick, but the wheels and tyres are now looking second hand. Good work by all who keep him going. I have a claim with vero after my 4burger received a punt up the c@#t. The only negative comment re Vero is poor communication but most importantly the claim was accepted promptly and repairs are under way. Vero = recommended.

I've lost count on how many truck retreads seem to be on the roads too. It's where the whole tread has come off. Nearly got killed from one them a few wears back that came off a milk truck.
There but the grace of God or my case a second or two and a few yards on I'd not be here.

Mate you guys should live in the Naki region at the moment, the gypsy shifts are on,that is when the local farming community shifts farms, usually lock, stock and kitchen sink.We can get the farmer doing the old time honoured droving along to the farm,if in close proximity. As you would expect the odd bit of shite, mind you from here on it is not so bad,and with the rain it washes away quickly.

You can't blame the trucky for all the effluent, sure they have tanks, but there isn't many dumps, and or they don't have the time to empty(at this time),between loads. The cockies could help by putting the animals on a no feed regime the night before,so they are empty when picked up,means they crap on the concrete of the yards or races by the loading area.

To say the truckies are busy is an understatement, when the exodus of cows and cockies shifting to Southland from here,I knew of a driver doing 3 trips to the ferry in Wellington in one day, each trip took about 7-8 hrs,he would load in Hawera go to Wgtn & return, load & return, the last trip another guy loaded and he left after catching 2hr rest whilst the truck was fuelled, and stock loaded, took some magic work on his logbook, but he had 4 days off on his return.

Can't see a hell of a lot you could do about most litter on the road !
local bouroughs have awareness programs going on to secure ya load on the way to tip and there are penilties for insecure loads if seen by a coppa !
Truck tyres ie retreads peeling off, 9 out of ten truckies would pull over and have the tyre replaced, ok ok 5 out of ten ! So you'd think if they stopped they'd move it off the road ! Can see alot of the rubber peeling at night so it gets missed by the driver till he checks the rig next !
Shit ?? Well shit happens ! Still see a lot of stock trucks with a pipe hanging out the rear ! Have they changed regulations so they have to have storage tanks now or something ?

True. The person 'responsible' for the brick was most likely completely unaware of it's destination on the road. I know that doesn't change the end result of a bike hitting it but as road users we all know there's potentially all kinds of crap strewn in our path. Small things are often more subtly dangerous as they're much harder to spot, especially if visibility is poor.
What really gets my knickers in a twist regarding the litter problem is seeing a car load of people (kids and adults responsible for this) throwing their rubbish out the window of the car; often takeaway leftovers/boxes/bags. The attitude is treating the environment like a big rubbish bin rather than the small inconvenience of having to wait until they get home or to the nearest township to put it in a bin. Heaven forbid they might have rubbish sitting in their car for a while! Unfortunately the people I'd like to rant at the most over this would just give me the finger and tell me to f**k off (if not beat the shit out of me for daring to mention it).
Great to hear that the paperwork side of things seems to be running so smoothly and that the rider was not seriously injured. We're with Vero too and hope not to be in a situation where we need to put in a claim form!

There already is an active group now, it's called BRONZ!

The only problem is that they probably don't get enough support from the people who need their help.

There are posts and directions to their Webb site on KB somewhere. :o Cheers John.

So true, I thought it was just a British disease, with the exception of those that try to kill me, nothing pisses me off more on the road, such a beautiful country, I'd hate to see it go the way of Britain, Just one big rubbish tip and your quite right if ya bring it to their attention, Ya get treated like you've done summat wrong, I just overtake these days and gesture rather naughtily, and a lot of good that does eh. :bash:

It might be just be me but i got that, Wont toss it out the window buzz going on, but does it pile up lol ! No respect for cars and it aint till someone complains about the lack of footroom, or it starts spilling out when someone exits do i have a cleanout ! (into a bin of course ! Usually a council one lol)
Thinking about it, it must be near 3 years since i owned this white deisel slug, lol Off white now cause it aint ever been washed (oil, water, tyres and brakes is all that gets looked at)
