I dont know any more about bikes than the next guy, but I can have a look with ya if you like. Best thing to do is get a mechanic to check it over. I have a van we can use to take it there, or I can just ride it for you(if the current owner is happy with that.)
Strike

that'd be awesome! maybe able to have you take a look at it after all Frosty..
provided the owner doesn't mind of course.... i'll get back to you

Get one us to ride it there? Frosty would only need it for what 1-2 hours Frosty?
If you enplane to the dude what you are doing and say that you will pay for the gas to and fro i am sure he will be accommodating.
Hell the guy might even ride it there for you

The bike was good all weekend, took it for a blat (a sensible one mind you:nono:) on saturday, was awesome.
MONDAY MORNING!!! THE DRAMA BEGINS!!
riding to work, came to an intersection, went to take off, bike stalled and WOULD NOT start again, tryed all that i could think of, nothing, called a mate who has alot more exp then myself to give it ago, still nothing...
uh oh.
Had to leave it parked up in some strangers drive (good bugger for lettn me do that) and ask around for help on what could be wrong with it. Battery? Spark Plugs? Earth wire? i have no idea, all i know is the bike wont turn over, all the appropriate lights come on when the key is turned and when you hit the ignition switch they fade and the head light goes off completly.
so i called the previous owner, turns out he didn't get the bike serviced before he handed over the keys like we AGREED he would. Asshole:mad:. then when i said that he said he would book the bike in for a service he denied saying it, told me " I didn't have the time, i was moving house, i went on a course, i have been fair to you and now your getting smart. i will warn you once, BE CAREFUL. WANKER.
Chances are if he got the bike serviced like he said he wud this wouldn't be happening right now.
Any ideas on what could be wrong with the bike would be great. i can't leave it stranded at some random ( but good) dudes house for long....

Very well could be, apparently the bike was sitting for quite some time before the sale

Did you try bump start it? (They dont have a kick start do they?)
I hope you did a VIR report on it before you bought it, if he was dishonest about doing a service I hope there is nothing else nasty about it.
Could just be that the battery is poked, if thats the case a voltmeter across the battery terminals when it is running should show 12-13ish volts.
Where is it now? I might be able to come take a look after work if you want to drop me a pm with your number.

Mind you, I dont think we really need the "exact" location disclosed on a public forum, but a PM or general indication might be a good idea :niceone:
Am happy to help, but would need to know before 5.30 so I know if to head over the shore or not. (I live cityside)

Yeah.. sounds exactly like a flat battery to me.
I s'pose that's the best case scenario. Specially if he mentioned it's been sitting round.
Ofcourse it could be a whole lot worse like a broken electrical componnent or rah-dah rah-dah. But it's probably only the battery. Bump start ftw!

Battery hopefully is all thats wrong but I suspect you may have charging system issues

but I suspect you may have charging system issues
Not necessarily. If a battery sits around long enough the plates will sulphate up. Eventually plates will touch and short out a cell(s).

got my hands on a voltmeter, battery only reading at 10.6 :Pokey: as for charging systems issues... god i hope not, but funnily enough, the idea of ripping into my bike really appeals to me:doctor:, bottom line, if its just the battery, sweet, if its something more then thats just more mechanical exp for me huh:rockon:

Battery in there at the mo is a Yuasa YTX7L-BS 12v, that sound right?
Lee Rusty
18th June 2008, 15:47
Lee here, bugger, started ok on the night I looked at it, sounds like the dude selling it didnt do what he said he would. He did say he would get it serviced.
Ok anyway sounds like battery stuffed and that sounds like right battery for it. The number srefer to size etc and placement of terminals - s that one fits ok just get another one the same.
If you need a hand drop me a line, if i had got email earlier I would have picked up for you as i have trailer.
Before fitting new battery put it on charger for a couple of hours to maximise its life, new batterys just put in bike and then statered on lecky start suffer in the long run.
If you have any probs call me - if you dont have my number it is in the pm section from last time

18th June 2008, 15:49
when I checked it out the charging system was ok - so unles something has broken it will prob just be due to the down time of battery
And you can get cheap batterys like Rocket or Yacht brand they are ok if used every day but they are not as good as the Yuasa.

Errr... that wasnt with the engine running right? Running should be more then 12V.

Should be 14V+ with the engine running :bleh: (up to 17 at revs depending on the strength of the alternator + reg/rec setup)
If you need a battery charger you can borrow mine
