Even if had insurance but when claim time comes they might find out and say since you are unlicenced therefore the insurance policy is void.....I think it is written in the policy that it is void if you do not have the appropriate licence. I just think insurance companies try all sorts of ways to avoid payout

Apply for a GDLS exemption for the 600 then you will be fully insurable. If they won't give you an exemption, then you shouldn't be riding a 600.

Yup, I had my old VFR insured for Fire/theft (it was insured while garaged at my premesis) when I was on my Restricted licence. Its insurable because you are allowed to own any bike (just like any other asset) you are just not entitled to ride it (on a public road presumably)

Anyway, short answer.... YES

This is good stuff... My last ride was out of capacity conditions (400) but wasn't worth enough to get worried about.

I'm looking to be in the same boat with a 600 but wanna spend between 4-6K so am def interested about covering it for theft.

My Mrs (broker) recons you should be able to get storage cover that will cover your bike for theft, just not while ridden. She said to try NZI as they are pretty flexible or else contact a broker.

Nup.
I got told...

They do, but as you are not ment be riding it they wont insure you exept at your house.
which kind of defeats the purpose of theft insurance unless you are trying to build a clean insurance reccord.
aparently too many "stolen" bikes were getting found in ditches etc etc etc...

what if you were riding said bike in somewhere like Glen Innes, and you got mugged, and your bike stolen. could you claim then?

or you popped up to the shop for milk, left the bike outside the shop, and it got stolen from there? could you claim?

or, you were out riding it, and fell off it (not likely i know, but) then called your mate from the killer beez, and he stole it from the ditch? could you claim then?

You can buy a decent 600 for 5k at this time of year...far less risk while you're unlicensed...

or apply for the exption...are you over 25? You'd only need do 3 months on yer restricted + some ghey test then you're on yer full and laughing ;)

I was in exactly the same situation as you - aint no way I was going to ride a pissy little 250 for a whole damn year. They just wrote out the exemption - no questions asked. There is only one problem, and that is you don't get to ride around feeling like a lawbreaker - much to be said for this.

Grow up - get off your high horse, get dispensation and get insured properly. Or if you cannot get dispensation - tough shit - ride within the terms of your licence.

Im sick of people that think that they are such riding gods that the law shoudnt apply to them.

I bought a '97 YZF600R with Ohlins suspension and a tweaked engine that ran with better/faster/newer bikes for 5k. that was from a dealer. Rode it to work every day for 2 years, did trackdays and plenty of weekend rides and sometimes wish I still had it.
Work mate bought a '96 ZX6R - 45000kms, near mint condition for $4600. The thing rides beautifully.

Yes - I did read what you wrote.

You said
anyway no its not my first bike, infact its about my 16th I just came from riding dirt bikes and riding a 250 aint my thing.

That's where I came to the conclusion that you believe your riding skills are good enough that you shouldn't have to worry about riding within the legal constraints of your licence.

Yes - you said you were looking for insurance - but its obvious that you are not looking to RIDE the bike insured.

You say that if you hit anyone you would pay - Nice theory until you hit a 100k BMW.

Anyway - glad to see that you got covered by Kiwibiker - so what did you end up with? Will you be riding insured?

Last time I checked, theres no law forcing you to have insurance. I believe if you ride without it, you should acknowledge and accept the risks/consequences (like if you crash into a nice beemer, turn around, lower your pants and get some lube. Or prove them at fault, like I did).
I have been in a position where the pro's out-weighed the con's in the instance of not having insurance.

Call me the insurance cowboy... :done:

Indeed - there is no law - and of course its rider beware. But lets be honest - how many of us can take the hit of (say) 30k (excluding the cost of fixing your own bike) should we actually be the at fault party?

To me its just common sense.

The only Pro of not having insurance (that I can guess) is not paying the premimums - thats not a pro's / cons argument but more a risk / impact.

To me the risk is simply not worth saving iro $800 per year. But each to their own.

Well if where asking honest questions, who here can avoid hitting the Beemer while concentrating, being careful, etc? Everyone?

If your trying to avoid the 30k hit your going to be very careful and not hit the beemer.

This is a good way to learn how not to make mistakes.

And if its not your mistake then you shouldnt have anything to worry about.

"But to each their own", yep, well heres our own.

Katman - is that you???

Dargor - The problem is that none of us are infallible. People, regardless of all good intentions do have accidents.

Falling off and dying is also a good motivation not to have an accident - yet (sadly) Ive lost count of how many KB'ers here have lost their lives already this year?

Again - it doesnt answer the question about what happens IF you unfortuantely do have an accident (and in the wrong etc).

Personally I'm for insurance being made compulsory. :devil2: Primarily because the majority of people who do have the unfortunate accidents and that are "at cause" without insurance often fail to have the balls or the means to stand up and pay.

At least 3rd party insurance. No matter WHAT you hit...your covered. If your bike isn't worth the premiums. It saves lengthly court battles.

I am 190cm and am exempt of this restriction because of the dangers of riding in a cramped up position on a 250 (I swear they don't know about hyobags)...

meh anyway, I thought they were going to restrict me to a certain model of bike, I told them I was keen on a Suzuki GSR600 (road bike) but they said I could ride anything up to 600cc... nothing said about a specific model of 600 - 2 days later I own an R6
