View Full Version : Safe to ride?

need to have some plastic welding done on my fairings so took them off tonight.

Life would be easier if I could ride my bike to work tomorrow but concerned aboutt he air intakes being open the way they are. (open road riding to work). Worried about the very large intakes missing. There must be filters or something in there. I am not pulling them apart to find out.

Safe to ride to work for a couple of days or should I ditch it and bum a ride off the neighbour?

There should (unless someone has removed it) be an air filter in the airbox that provides all the protection needed against debris.

thats what I thought. Then when i started pulling it apart (bearing it mind its not a honda so it doesnt just fall apart - it takes some effort) on the front just behind the fairings are two very large boxes that look like they are for trapping water or something. I think I will ride it unless someone has a big no no dont do that your bike will have a hernia before I leave at 7am in the morning.

Yeah you'll have an airbox with a filter in it (under tank) so shouldn't be an issue. On the positive side you might not have any issues with the :Police: riding a naked round as a bit more effort to go faster :Pokey:

...

As I understand it a motor vehicle needs a headlight to be road-legal? :Police:

probably needs indicators too. I also understand the speed limit is 100kph. Police/legalities are not really a big concern. More concerned about potiental damage to the system.

I've investigated this as I'm still in the naked bike conversion process, and the 6 is pretty similiar. There was an argument that there could be a loss of performance due to potential intake length tuning issues, but given that (at least on the 6..) there isn't an airtight seal where they pass through the frame I doubt it matters.

As for safety, the engine should be fine with a little water coming in. Usual disclaimer applies for when you come back with bent conrods....

Did you through it down the road recently?

no. just a little wear and tear at 105,000k. Broke a irritating little lug off the fairing that holds the headlight in place. Tried to see if the guy down at manawatu plastics could weld it in place but he couldnt get his hand in there so have to take the whole thing apart for a 5 min job.

Ah crap like that just pisses you right off.

I'm at the stage of designing my new fairings, so hopefully not too much longer til I'm back on the 6.

ldnz
9th June 2008, 20:18
Yep lined the frame up with lasers and confirmed it was straight, found a new set of forks and a front wheel off ebay that are in better condition than the originals, and did some work on the engine.

Just waiting for the frame/swingarm etc to get its top coat, then make the new fairings. Still gonna be Kwaka green. Of course.

You could always tape a couple of your girlfriends/boyfriends :love:pantyhose over the inlets if you are worried about crap getting in there.

Crap getting in the inlets that is, not the pantyhose

Just to be different, I'll answer your question.
Cruising along will be just fine, the motor may hunt around a bit as the ram air pressurizing system/equalizer hose thingie will be disconnected. You will not damage the motor. And yes, your air filter will still be inside the box, so no worries there either.

cowboyz
9th June 2008, 21:23
be careful there. you will get infracted for talking on topic on kiwibiker.

Just dug through the manual and the "secondary" air intake has a inline filter that is still far enough along that it is still connected to the bike. Thats what I was looking for. All is good. Bring on the naked look tomorrow.

Looks like my zx7 with the fairings off actually...

Bloody big bastard those two boxes! Been wondering about exactly what purpose the secondary chamber on my ones serves. Probably something to do with standing wave resonances and other funky details that might make you 1-2 hps at 150+ km/h - fluidmechanics = black magic!

But I'm sure Sugilite is right on the money:

You'd expect that the air filter is there - otherwise it probably wouldn't make much difference whether the ram-air ducts are inplace anyway.

probably needs indicators too.

Unless it's vastly different from my zx7 it should be quite possible to screw the headlight assembly on to the structure that holds the instruments as well. It's that which supports the weight of the headlight assembly, which in turn supports the top fairing.

Indicators are easily duct taped to the sides of the headlight assembly and hooked up. I drove my zxr250 like that for almost a month.

well it went well. - ish.

I did end up attaching the headlight this morning cause it was a bit too dark for my liking when I left for work. The motor "hunting" could more acurately be described and Lurching/stalling/having a massive hissy fit/ bursts of power and then none. Above 60-70k/hr it was a real joke. Just couldnt get the bike going. Made it to work on time though and got the fairing repaired (top job from scott at manawatu plaastics) for $25. Dropped it in to Meanie office this afternoon so he could bring it home for me (what a guy)

Got rest of bike back together. Just waiting on the rest of the bits to arrive.

Sweet.

That's a surprise. Are you sure it was not your feeble arms struggling to hold it all together with the wind force of a naked bike?

Hmm, ok, the 2 or so times I had my fairings and snorkels off, it was not that bad, did you try short shifting to keep the revs low?

cowboyz
11th June 2008, 16:28
tried everything. It was really bad. I didnt think it would make that much of a difference but it had me seriously wondering if I had fuel in the tank. Below 60 (once I got to town) it came right but open road it run like a dog. As soon as I put the intake pipes back on it was just like new. Learning experience I guess. and it did get me to work and back without breaking down so that is a good thing.

cowboyz
11th June 2008, 16:29
just thinking. On the 7 is the snorkels upright (so to speak) so the vents are pointing striaght up where as on the 9 they are fully open pointing forward. Maybe?

sugilite
11th June 2008, 21:07
I was talking bout the c1 i used to race. The 750 snorkels just go to the top of the motor for cooling, naff eh. lol

cowboyz
11th June 2008, 21:09
oh. Oh well, beats me. Its all back together now and running mint so that is all good.
