Anyone know how to get out to the bombing range without driving up the beach? Me n a few friends are keen to check it out but we dont have a 4wd so driving up is out of the question.
we tried to find it yesterday, drove right to the end of wilsons road only to find a dead end with a PRIVATE PROPERTY signposted drive that looked like it carried on out there, then went all the way up southhead to the forest to drive up a big hill and come to another dead end with a fenced off walkway :angry2:
Any help?

Maybe people fence their property off for good reason... like, maybe its theirs. Maybe it has the name bombing range for another good reason...like maybe its a RNZAF bombing range. Yes, they were bombing up there today as the red flag was flying.:ar15:
A few riders do go up there but go in through Wilson Rd, (the private property sign) Hence the locals are a bit shitty. Can't see the attraction myself unless you had a Quad. KDX will struggle.
Besides its Deer Hunting season at present in the forest and them Clampits get mighty twitchy with the trigger when bikes are disturbing bambi.:2guns:

I duno could be exciting if you hit a round that hasnt gone off might get some real serious air off one of the dunes.

why would you go all the fucken way up there ?
when you could ride at the bike park,
what you would pay in gas to get up there would nearly cover the price to ride at the woodhill, much more fun/challange /rider support, better tracks

RNZAF bombing ??? from what, a Helicopter or a kite ??

you can get to it through the forrestry, but thats all private access
even down at the woodhill end you can get right through, but you'ld
get done for tresspassing if you get caught.
i worked in there for 6months about 8 years ago, theres shit loads of deer and good riding in there, as for the no access farm entries thats because of all the pouching that goes on up there, and the odd grower trying to get access, if you sneak in some where just make sure it's not ballot time for the
hunting or else you might find a hole in the tank about the size of a 3.03.
but there is some good riding to be had up there but it's such a hassle to get in an stuff not many bother.
might add to the fun getting chased by sucurity

A squadron of pink flying elephants :shifty:
As far as inland access to the Bombing Range, there are a few through the forestry, but without a 4x4, I wouldn't recommend it, and besides, you need keys for the various gates (which you probably already know).
I don't know of any other public access than Wilson's or Rimmer's and our band of mates are up there more often than not. Besides, as was stated earlier, it's Bambi Killing Frenzy time, so I'd steer clear and let crazy gun people have their fun in peace

also run the risk of a 2 year tresspass notice if you try and sneak in via the forest.

Oh btw...I forgot to mention that DOC is seriously looking at gaining control over that area as well, and closing it to unrestricted public usage
If anyone knows anymore, I'd love any updates.

Will look forward to it.
One note folks, and cringe if you feel like it, but any unauthorised (and caught) access to the beach will only give them cretins more reasons to close off this awesome playground that is the Bombing Range.
So please, please...try to go easy and preserve our right to go and have good clean fun in the dunes.

Probably a P-3K and either practice bombs or Mk82 500lb 'dumb' bombs...
My mate did a course on the new Pinzgauers up there... they made light work of it, but that's probably due to a f***off V8 engine and having 6 wheels.

I'd say more probably a bunch of grunts on demo exercises.
It's fun to sneak in on foot and watch the fun at a safe distance when they're at it, but they do tend to get pissed off if they see anyone hanging about.

Talk about you road boys takin us off topic Jeepers!! LOL!
I used to go there when the kids and me where learners. I have a 4x4 ute so just continued on past the pits at the old sandpit then 15mins or so up the beach (check on the tides though!). Park the ute on a dune, take the bikes off, and there's some OK tracks, forest to explore, sand dune jumps and a few good hard pack places to practice wheelies behind the dunes and not on the beach. So its not to bad for a free, fun, casual afternoon. Now that the family price is reasonable at the sandpit for 3 bikes and we have gained a bit of ability I'd probably not go there now. But the Bombing Range was fun for a hoon without havin to worry about other bikes to much. Plenty of quad tracks back there. But last time I went was some time ago now so the rules could well have changed since then. I don't know if you can still get in that way now the Sandpit has changed where the pits are. Ktm boy should be able to tell us?

You dont go to the end of Wilsons, there is a car park next to the lake about 5 minutes up Wilsons, access road goes from the carpark to the beach, its rough, 4x4s only or ride your bike. Then ride miles up the beach to the bombing range, I got dragged out there a few times cause my pussy quad riding mates wont ride anywhere else. Im so over it now especially since the last time when we met oncoming police in there 4x4 ute, got a telling off and threatened taking our bikes off us, fines etc. Fair enough I guess.
We also tried driving right up to southend too, accessed the beach through foresty roads, dragged bikes under gates etc. Naughty.
Bombing range is ok, there are a few big jumps hidden away in some of the sand dunes but its all torture on the bikes and dangerous, no direction etc so risk of head on collisions are high. Better than riding around in circles through whoopy old sandpit but definately rather go to Kimmys or Thunder.

lol, to be honest it'd be nice if there was a decent size whoops section, can't say I like them, but I know I need to get more practise on them :).

Nahh - I've ridden approximately 24,984,537 sandwhoops in my lifetime and I've just about had enough of them, thanks all the same.
The smooth trails up there now introduce a new factor - scary speed on the open trails. On occasion, I've seen peak speeds in the mid to high 90s (km/h) on the more open tracks at the Sandpit - I'd hate to hit a tree at that speed. I stick to the singletrack in the trees these days.
Keep up the great work KTMBoy - the park's in great nick!

We have started to ride some of the fast open tracks and yeah the speed does get up there and things can happen quickly. I've had a few close calls. My mate Aaron had a high speed head on with a tree on the Gum Tree Ridge track. Lucky he had a neck brace. Reckons it saved him but he was a bit dazed for a while. Didn't save his bar risers though.
The big thing I notice is that since the whoops have gone that I've got really unfit and fat! The whoops did wonders for your fitness. Also don't have the confidence to just nail a set of whoops when I do come across them now like I used to.

the navy divers, S.A.S, army, armourers and orions blow shit up there, and it's really neat when some dickheads turn up and we have to wait around until they fuck off cos some idiots think it would be cool to die from shrapnel hitting them....stay off the range it has to be closed each time you go on there....and hell it's pretty dangerous with all the unexploded shit they haven't found which has been known to just go up......seriously it sucks when you fullas ride on there- there's plenty of other good spots you can ride without disturbing our day!or at least only go there when the flags aren't up and they aren't using it.......the defence force is in a sad state but believe me the explosives used are REAL and will fuck you up!!!just my 2c
