OK ladies and Gents, heres one for you.
Something different and something that probably only a few have done before. I for one have never done this so its all new to us. Yep, a night ride!

Luckily we have well marked tracks so getting lost won't be a problem.(yeah right) and you will require a light. If you own a MX bike, strap a dolphin torch on and give it a whirl. Although one of those twin helmet halogen lights off the net are bloody good.

You can ride all day and do this at no extra charge. Plus we will have the food organised and hopefully a party bus complete with soundz.

TWO MOONS...:moon::moon: and I promise you we will see one or two...maybe the undie man will make an appearance?LOL

Check out the attachment.

depends on what someone would want to spend (given this appears to be a one off) but there are heaps of different types of lights out there.

Nordy
10th June 2008, 19:11
you could build your own (http://www.mountain-bike-world.com/diy-halogen-bike-light.html) halogen lights that use a motorbike battery (Sealed Lead Acid 7Ah battery)

And we will have glow sticks marking entry points to the tracks as well as crossed red glows to signify wrong ways.

mmm, starting to have second thoughts about this ride. Especially if I've got to wear glo-stick goggle things, while some dudes riding around in the night in just his fuckin undies.

Cheese, you might be able to borrow Daves KDX as that has a light on it, you seemed to enjoy riding that. shit you were fast on it too, swear you even got out of 2nd gear at one point.

cheese
11th June 2008, 17:14
LOL I'd rather ride the CR! That KDX was fucking funny. the front is so soft you can't feel a thing!

FYI - I've been investigating lighting kits and I can get some Luxon 3w LED kit modules and build them up for a pretty good price. Don't be fooled by the 3w - that gives out about 250 lumens of light (fucking bright) and cause its only 3w it uses fuck all power. I'm going to set up two of them and they will fit under the peak on my helmet and they will use 6w which is .5amp so a 2 amp hour battery will last around 4 hours. I should be able to build the entire thing up for under $150ish including a battery. The light is about 1.5cm in diameter. I might have to make up a holder out of some ali or plastic though. I'll keep you guys updated.

Ktmboy

Hold onto your ideas about lighting for the mo as I may have an idea.(thx Nordy).

I entered LED as a search on TM and ended up buying this for $25 delivered. I also bought a 14 unit LED unit for $10 and will be doing some trials to see how good they are. If the 14 LED is OK then we may consider buying 20 or so and hire them out for $5, or maybe Heineken donations.

Standby for the results when I recieve the goods in a couple of days.

Whoa boy, Hold up.

For the uninformed here is the go on the Undie man.

For the last few years this bloke puts in an appearance a couple of times a year. He's starting to be a legend.
He used to park his car at the old car park, get out, look around 360 deg and then run, yes, just like Forest Gump (and I ran and I ran and I ran and then I stopped) in his white jockey Y fronts complete with tea stains on the front (Chop tells me.)

This guy did this in the middle of fuckin winter stripped to the waist. Funny but freakin scary when you were down there by yourself on a winters night.

Then about three hours later he would reappear, still running, from a totally different direction, always dripping wet, jump in his car and be gone.

Since the bike park has moved he has only put in one quest appearance.

The legend lives on....will he be back to show his TWO MOONS on the 2nd August?

Surely there are better ways to get your kicks? Like streaking at the Big Day out?

these things rock(still abit pricey tho), there mainly used in adventure races, locally made too.
forget about the LEDs, go for Luxeon LED setup as they're heaps brighter, check out jaycar, or soanarplus.com (Jaycar's sister company, and much cheaper) if you want to make your own setup for cheaper.

If you want things bright just wait for the sun to come up.

Think I'll just ride around with a ciggy in my mouth.

These are the B's n E's. I think these are the ones that Chris Birch has set up for his night races overseas. Last Man Standing and the likes.

one of the most recent nz mountain biker mags had a night light review that covered ayup, topeak, hope, night lighting and a few others, showed beam output and it was awesome to see the different lights compared. Could be worth a looksee.

ok so any one found one like the old push bike style that salf charges as you go think they had attachment that had small wheel that run on the rim with a small chargeing system in it???? No idea if these have been advanced to give out better light.

Another idea....

Night vision goggles!!! There are a few on TM. I will recommend a model that is waterproof and could be used in the water up to around 15m deep. Who knows, you might miss 1 turn...... then another... a big sand dune jump... and splashhh!!!!!! you are swimming!!!!

FUN!!!!

WR's will have no problems that night!!!! :sunny:

13th June 2008, 08:55
THe lighting kits I was going to make up was the Luxeon or the Cree LED star LEDS. Man those things are bright. And use piss all power!!

Do you think that its better to mount the lights on your helmet or the front fo your bike though?

barty5
13th June 2008, 09:37
i would go with front of bike you might find the lights on helmet create to much glare that close up to face could make it a bit hard to see.

LittleJohn
14th June 2008, 09:05
There are the ones in the Jaycar catalogue. Both head and handle bar ones.

Nordy
14th June 2008, 10:01
mounting it on the helmet has the advantage that you see where you are looking, however if mounted on the bike you see were its pointed, which for the road is fine but for twisty tight track type riding having it mounted on the bike is a PITA (IMO anyways.)

If you want to build your own these guys have already done it and seen what works and what doesnt with most of the stuff avaliable here. http://www.vorb.org.nz/ftopic-55312-days0-orderasc-0.html
