Hello people from Christchurch!

Firstly, lucky! Visited twice already this year and love it. Fiancée and I are planning to move there in 2009.

I have only really been there when it is brilliantly sunny and warm. As much as I would like to believe it is like that all the time, I think it may not be.

Now can I borrow some of your sweet time and ask a naive question about the weather?

Does it snow in Christchurch central in the winter?

I have many more questions to ask but that will do for now. I am from the north island and two many questions would overload my brain.

Dunno, but apparently you need a gas mask to deal with the smog.

I drove the Family from Invercargill to Hanmer on Saturday (Well I tried to anyway) I got as far as Oamaru when the Blizzard hit. I drove through the Snow for a further 3 hours before walking into the Waipara hotel for the night coz SH1 and SH7 got closed.

Mind you it was only about 3 inches of snow rather than the 3 feet of snow I was used to in Scotland every Winter.

I am going down this weekend so I hope it snows then, but it probably wont!

Christchurch is a lovely place, I was born there and all my family live there basically so I go down a wee bit. Can have very very hot days in the summer but can get very crisp and cold.

Briefly - it's cold and wet stuff.

One week we had a snow fall follwed by a freeze (1 week of minus 20 through the day and minus 27 at night). It was cold but the snow lost all cohesion and was like fine white sand all week. Not wet but very cold on that occasion.

lived there for over 20 years

saw snow in central chch twice

the city does not get snowed on, except in extreme circumstances, but you can expect regular frosts and zero degrees through winter

the port hills DO get snowed on pretty much every winter but probably only once or twice each season and usually only a few inches down to around the 400-500m mark

Snows rarely, but does happen. Weather is cold and dry in the winter, does rain, but not particularly often. You can bike all year round, although with early morning starts in the middle of winter, you should watch for ice. Never really notice smog, but then I've lived here since ages ago. Generally the weather could be described as neutral... not stunningly warm, but doesn't rain or blow a gale either.

Generally fucking cold when I get up in the morning (6am), and sun is up at about 8am, cold edge not gone until about noon, starts getting colder again from 3pm on.. 9pm you will feel a shiver and chill

Snow.. bah.. the "snow fall" we got here the other day was laughable. I jumped onto the road and couldn't believe how a little bit of snow made everyone pack up their vehicles and stay inside!

There aren't any polar bears here at the South pole. Fuksakes, don't they teach anything in school these days?
