Just wondering what oil I should be putting into my '81 RD50? I don't know whether the oil currently in it is synthetic or otherwise.
Any help?
Cheers :D

Cool bike.
I use Motul in my small two strokes but that might be overkill. Depends how good a condition the motor is and how long you want to keep it running. Oh, and how you use it (flat-out, puttering along or somewhere in-between)

It's just my round town bike, and occasional 80kph thrashfest. I'm just wondering about synthetic, natural or mineral, or whatever else there is or isn't. What should I go for?
The motor's just been rebuilt and is in pretty good order. It's blowing a bit of smoke, but I just put that down to the current oil that's in it.

It's always going to blow smoke, its a 2 stroke, if it doesn't blow smoke your in trouble! Quite the opposite to 4 strokes.
2 stroke's burn the excess oil (hence the smoke).
I think your probabaly be ok with a mineral or natural 2 stroke oil. Try to buy some what quality stuff and look for "air cooled motorcycles" on the back of it.
I used to run my DT on mineral stuff no problem.

Cheers :D thanks for the advice. Will I have to clear my oil tank if it has synthetic oil in there?
*Edit* I've been told it's blowing more smoke than is 'necessary'?

Autolube or Pre-Mix? Easy fix really just turn the ol oil pump down :).
Nah i wouldn't worry about it personally but if your anal you can.

Everyone will go silly at this point & tell you what brand you should run based on their preference. Just find a decentish sort of one from your garage & stick to it. It will be fine for the RD. It will be mineral in there so I wouldn't worry about mixing issues, no one before you would have.
If it really is smoking a heap don't adjust the pump less than std (although an idea to check adjusted correctly & cable isn't 'hung up' pulling it too far on.
More likely is that your pipe needs a clean out after years of old oil collecting in there. My old RD50 would hardly run until I did this. Ideally you take the baffle out & burn the oil out with a gas torch.

Something like Castrol 2t would be good... Think it's about $10 a litre and will last for miles. Smells good too... You can get it just about anywhere too...

Its a nice wee bike but even from new Yamaha did not recommend synthetic in these, its not worth the extra dollars, save that for decoke sets and plugs.
Don't be tempted to try the hotter plug thing either if it appears to be smoking a tad excessively, personal experience tells me this can be a bad thing.
Also as was suggested get a reasonable dino based 2 stroke oil then stick with that brand, see if you cant find the replacement for what Yamaha originally specified for the bike and go with that, it wont matter what you have in the pre mix tank now as it will be diluted after a couple of fills that it will make no difference. No need to adjust the mix ratios with the pre mixer until you have put a couple of tanks through, different oils behave differently and you could potentially end up running lean on oil and ruining the engine.
BTW come along to the Wed night maintenance evenings and feel free to ask questions there, that is if you have not already, personally been a bit busy to attend recently :(.

Cheers for that, I'll have to go on a scout for some oil then :niceone: I'll see if Romeos keen for the Weds night meetings, and you may just see me there.
