Any Paraglider Pilots carry their wing around the country on a phat sprotsbike ? How well do these two machines go together ? Seems an ideal way to hike from one "on" site to the next - swap coasts in a couple of hours. A little tough to get up a grassy hill on it, but oh well. Tempted..

That would seem more appropriate to an adventure type bike. Quite well suited really.

Meekey_mouse's brother (aero something something on here) used to do it before he sold his :).

Thanks Guys. Swoop, yes it does seem that way, but glider pilots spend sometimes hours travelling between sites - wasted on an adventure bike. Also, the feel of a sportsbike is the same "type" of thing to a paraglider.

I am surprised there are not more paraglider pilots on KB.

I want to get into paragliding this summer. Where and how to get started? (Auckland bound) Can anyone provide details?

One serious wannabe rigth here. Did the trial day - still makes me smile.hee hee, wicked az ay. I have about 1.5 hour airborne. I didn't finish my ticket coz my instructor screwed me over. I'll finish it off this summer I think. PG is right up there with hardass sportbike riding. Excellent.

Waxxa, go here http://nzhgpa.org.nz/db/commercial/index.php and ring around and ask to if you can go along and watch them training. Warning: you will like it, and you will like it a lot.

Sour grapes department - this is what happened to me;
Read all about it here http://meshnetworks.co.nz/~steve/pg-report.txt.asc.pdf
Result was Shane Tims got himself cited. http://meshnetworks.co.nz/~steve/NZHGPA%20Disciplinary%20Meeting%20October%2014.doc
BTW, he arranged the glider sale to me too. I wondered why no bastard wanted to fly it.. it was a dangerous piece of crap - thats why. Never got my thousand bucks back, and he kept the glider. YMMV with mr Tims.

I've thought about it a few times but never tried it. I had no idea there were so many PG pilots here.

One of my best mates broke his back paragliding near Wanaka, he was in traction and staring at the ceiling for three months, and more months wearing a freaky metal brace. He'd still like to get back to it though, still has his wing.
He rides a postie CT110.

Yeah there is no room for mistakes, as in sportbiking. Actually, you get a lot of leeway once airborne, unless you are doing something risky, like taking off or landing. Once you are clear of everything its pretty hard to make a fatal mistake. The biggest problem is not following the procedures, or flying into the lee of large hills, or flying in gusty or otherwise dangerous weather.

He rides a postie CT110.more dangerous that a paraglider ?

Did my apprenticeship many many years ago with a guy who got involved in paragliding way back in the late 70's I guess. Unfortunately was killed in a tractor accident on the family farm. Go figure. Always had a hankering to go up in a glider myself

Try it guys. Its a superb feeling.

edit: I probably shouldn't, but when I get my wing, when I find some cash, if anyone wants a wee glide down a grassy slope ur welcome to try it. Can't really hurt urself doing this - only one meter off the ground..

I finally got back to this. The paraglider is a little big and lumpy to tour extensively with, but it's ok for an hour at a time. There's plenty of space in it to put your drink bottles, bananas, radios etc. It's quite awkward hanging your arse off the seat and cornering the bugger hard so heavily loaded. Even getting on and off the bike should be done with some care.

It's a good feeling knowing you have a foot-launched glider on your back while you are belting along on your bike. :not:

Can only assume you gave up on the idea of the sports bike and just used the Hyosung?

When I cant afford to travel to Ruapuna no more, away with the birds I'll soar...thats the plan anyway.

This is working out damn good. Well off the richter.. It took a while to get used to a 15KG pack, but after that - just go hard...

Hello there - this Shane Tims just did something very similar to me - if you don't mind keen to know more about your story - might help with my complaint and citing to NZHGPA. PM me?
Cheers.
