Buying pants?

Ive been looking at buying some pants but would like your input:
for $200 dollar what would you buy and why?



Kevlar jeans (Quasi of course!)
leather (cheap pair?)
cordura

I would always try Leather but for $200 someone else would have to have loved them first.

My first bin happened while I was wearing Cordura and the armour wasn't particularly tough. The armour slid round my leg as I slid along the ground and the cordura had a big hole melted through it by the friction from the road.

But others love Cordura. Never tried Kevlar jeans though so I dunno.

I got a set of J Rocket perforated leather trou with armour off ebay for $100 to my door in as new condition,perfect for summer riding and if it rains or gets cold in winter a $10 pair off pull over waterproofs from the warehouse is as good as anything.Ive a pair of Cordura trou with armour size 34 from memory in the garage you can have for bugger all if need be.Failing that get hold of Quasi.

Just got some today myself, cordura with thermal liner and protection, tad more than 2 hundy though, here's my plan, wear them with liner over jeans or leathers in the winter, wear my leathers in summer and with outer cordura when its wet.

as much as i'd like to have leather and kevlar jeans i would go with
cordura if i was only going to have one pair.(which i have done)

I've always worn Draggin Jeans, until the day I wore my old man's corduras. FUCKIN' Horrible things they were, they just made the entire ride crap! Cold, but sweating, sticking to you, sliding all over the seat - just a frightening day.

That said, I'm sure if it was raining I would have prefered the corduras!

Kevlar Jeans: I discount these for the very fact that they have no armour protection. Armour doesn't sound like a big deal until you hit something. That something is of course the road. It doesn't matter at what speed you fall off, there will always be an impact as the first event. Knees and hips are totally vulnerable and in respect of knees, hard to fix. Kevlar jeans, like your helmet, are a one-time use after a bin, throw them away.

Leathers: I have a set for racing because they are undoubtably the best protection when sliding. They also have armour. But ... I don't race for hours at a time at night in zero temps or in the pissing down rain. They would be inappropriate in those cases, you have to buy additional gear to be able to ride in those conditions. Leathers are multi-use in slides.

Cordura: They have armour. They will protect your skin in a slide. They are water, wind and chill proof. One product meets all the needs above. Cordura pants, like your helmet, might be a one-time use after a bin. You may not have to throw them away, KB member Spittie (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php?u=5575) repairs them. He has a stock of coloured cordura for patching up.

It comes down to how often are you planning on binning and whether you ride at night or in rain or in winter.

I'm in the same position as you. The best place to go is TradeMe I think, in my opinion I must say. The best thing is that you can go with a super-dooper good brand that was $800 five years ago, and to this date, never been in a crash, perfect condition, and just $250. Just got myself a jacket which was in the same position as above. Good brand, and cheap. Always good.

Also you can try your best to twist the bike store guy's arm! :p

Try before you buy! When buying off trademe make sure that you fit it first! Different brands may say the same size, but may be a few inches out. :msn-wink:

I have all three types they all have pluses and minuses ....

1. Draggins (jeans) .. great for summer bad for winter and cold and wet ... I love them but there is no protection at all ... so I know we don't plan on falling off .. but in these you really shouldn't cos you will hurt.

2. leathers - I love my leathers, they are not waterproof - which means bad for winter .. and they are not that warm .... but apparently they do great in an off ... again ... if they have no armour and you come off expect to hurt at least a little probably not as bad as the jeans.

3. Codura - I have had three pairs ... loved them all ... if vented well and with liners they work no matter what the weather - ensure that they have well fitted armour (the pair that grub came off in didn't and he hurt a little) .. not all codura have armour - but you do need it with this type.

The thought of having adjustable armour makes me think that the road might want to re-adjust them when you fall off, making if so your bone hits the ground the second time you bounce.

It's the same with the jecket that I have, I'm trying to find a way to permanently reside it in the right place!

Actually, they look pretty good value. I googled the brand and came up with nothing which is a worry. Historically we haven't had a great deal of luck with new gear bought on trademe due to quality and have generally replaced it fairly quickly but maybe its ok.

The 'height' adjustable knee armour sounds good if it works, that's where I feel most vulnerable (say he who now limps somethimes). Otherwise I'd ahve the same misgivings as StClingin

One point that struck me is the distinction between motorcycle protective gear and weather protection. I suspect that a lot of the cheaper stuff on tardme may fall into the second category. Just cos the armour has a CE rating doesn't mean the whole ensemble has been tested. The bugger is that when you start looking for ratings the price generally goes up.

Anyway check the link. You'll find good advice on what to look for when considering gear.

dicounting budgets there is some pretty decent motorcross knee amour available these days not to mention hip amour too.
Weather: cheap leggings.

Indeed no arguement here, leather is the best for abrasion resistance for sure.

I think cordura is just as compromised as anything else, it's really down to who you listen too, what your own experiences are etc...

Hi, I just happen to have a pair lying around, a sample I didnt end up using, they will work with anything.

Our jeans are the same spec just different Brand.........our brand:msn-wink:.

I just got some Alpinestars Textile Gear off Ebay saved a shitload over what it would have cost here , the jacket alone is around $1100 here cost $451 landed

Know am a bit late BUT....important consideration not mentioned:
What do you like/not like wearing all day/part of the day......?
I don't mind at all wearing a cordura jacket, BUT I hated wearing the cordura pants.NOT very comfortable when off the bike.
That is important because I chose a bike to enjoy myself.
So I got myself some leather ones now and love m....Feels lot more comfortable.
Got some Merino long johns for underneath.....nice and warm.
Oh and just some cheap plastic rain pants, just in case (fold up to nothing)
