How do you track your mileage??

I am currently just recording my odometer reading on the petrol receipts but was thinking there must be a better way as I'm not the most organised person so there is a good chance I’ll loose some of these receipts before I get back to my computer to record it all...

I was thinking there must be some sort of java application that I could put on my nokia phone that would make it easy for me to record.... It is unusual for me not to have my phone so this would be ideal.... even better if it could sync up with my pc via bluetooth.

Has anyone used a java application on their phone to do this task? or are there better options?

On a trip I normally just record the k's as a note, but you could give this a try too,

Trip A + Trip B + Odometer :msn-wink:

Usually reset A on a new Tank, and use B for recording Trip.

Heh... That would be nice... I'd love some fancy gadget to do it all for me but at this stage it looks like keeping a pen in my jacket pocket or under the seat seems to be the way to go....

I just liked the idea of using my phone, it already has a GPS in it so I can track average speed etc.... but the notepad feature is a bit clumsy for recording everything...

I reset the odometer thingy every time i fill up then promptly forget to do anything about it then promise myself that next time i fill up i will reset it and take note then promptly forget to do anything about it then promise myself that next........................get the drift?

Seriously though, you only need to monitor your mileage a few times to get a feel for the average consumption. You can easily do that with pen and paper. Once you know how many k's you'll reliably get off a tank you simply ride off the trip meter.
except when you forget to reset it, doh!

I use the trip metre between tanks. Oh and when I clocked over from 39,999 to 40,000km, that caught my attention.

I'm a total geek. I write the mileage on each receipt, and enter the info into an Excel Spreadsheet.

Three different sheets - Petrol, Insurances and Consumables. And one sheet called Summary which calculates the Total Running Costs.

Which, incidentally, if you don't count the purchase price (as I paid cash for the bike) and not counting for depreciation, is $0.23/km.

I may try doing that for a bit :)

1) go to www.carfax.co.nz (http://www.carfax.co.nz)
2) type in your rego.

Voila! Free mileage tracking.

mine is just one big sheet. first part is just fuel costs, then 6 other sections
Tires, hot up parts, maintenance, dress up parts. with all having notes at the mileage installed, and the cost.

I don't.
I have no idea how many miles I get out of a set of tyres or a chain, or mileage between oil changes, that sort of thing. I usually reset tripmeter A when I fill up, but don't note the mileage - it's just a habit thing. Mebbe I should find out how many mpg or litres/100km or $/metre I get, but it's kinda academic.
And maybe scary. :pinch:

I do something similar. 3 pages,
1] Petrol
2]Oil, general maintenance,
3]Cost not related to this particular bike, eg riding gear, accessories that will pass from bike to bike etc.

I have set it up to display, mpg, km/l, and l/100km. It automatically updates whenever I add new data.
As I have a fuel card I have the option of entering the mileage on the docket.
For times when I cannot do this, I have printed out small forms that I can fill in at the pump. I stapled these together so they don't go missing.
Worked fine on my S.I. trip.

[p/t]

I just reset my trip everytime I fill her up - approximately 200 km later I'll tootle back for a refill.

Buy a hand held GPS unit. It keeps record of MILES traveled, number of stops, average speed, maximum speed.(dont show the missus unless she thinks its in KM/H)

I'm a geek too. Expenses only $0.25/km or $15.37/day. Av economy since new 5.87L/100km. And lots of other useless information...

 Why bother????? I ride from reserve to reserve on my tank. I have clocked it twice and get 250K's /tank. with the price of gas going up and up it just seems like a futile exercize. What you get today will be different tomorrow and even more so next week. I don't want to know what it costs to have a shit load of fun just as long as I have fun. Life is to short to analyze it to the inth degree. :2thumbsup

At the pump I enter the date, mileage, and fill-up info into a spreadsheet on my phone, and then transfer the info to a real spreadsheet at a later date.

What, you don't have a spreadsheet on your phone? :)

Accountants give you a whole lot of information you don't actually need too.

Yep, must admit I never use that function.

Interesting looking at the top speed recorded though :niceone:

An analogue speedometer does that - and all you have to do is, like, look at it.
