Looking at this rg on tradme, only $1400. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Sports-tourer/auction-20646488.htm
Who thinks I should go for this or wait for an FXR to come along?
And how much would it cost to buy a full set of safety gear; leathers; boots; gloves; and helmet?

Hey mate, welcome to the site :niceone:

That RG has alot of Km's on the clock, so i would be wary of buying it unless it can be proved that there was a recent rebuild (ie within the last 10-15000km's)

Great bike and awesome to ride (hence why i dont want to sell mine) but take a bit maintainence compared to the FXR...

Alot quicker than the FXR.... Ask about the rebuild life its had, then if it has had rebuilds get it checked out by a bike shop... If they ok it, go and buy it :niceone:

Jeremy -- Welcome.

Be wary of used two-strokes. To paraphrase Jrandom "you don't know where they've been!"

Budget for good riding gear? Allow a couple of thousand. If you plan to be a rider for the long haul, then buying good quality gear is essential. Hopefully you've got an average sized head, which should give you some choices when buying a helmet...

those RG's are really great toys. But they are getting a little old now.
Go ask to sit on the bike. I actually found the RG comfier to sit on then the FXR - but the FXR is still a good bike.
i still would have either for a first bike.
Depends how long your gonna keep it too - most of the guys i know that have FXRs, only keep em for about 6 months. Where i kept the RG for about 2 years til i blew it up.

damn i was budgeting about 2k for the bike and gear! I have an old leather jacket already, it's my dad's old one, good nick, just needed some boots gloves and helmet right? that shouldn't be a couple thousand! I'm only 15, and kinda small for my age, so I'll probably have very limited choice in helmets. didn't read the auction properly, says pickup only, i live on the other side of nz so won't be able to sit on it. I thought bikes went about 100k b4 they started to run down? didn't think 50 was that much... hmm i don't think i'll risk getting a crappy old bike. Also saw one in trade and exchange for 950, but its been spraypainted. done 8000k. I wish I won Lotto damnit. Or I'd get a 500% payrise. Where'd everyone get their first bikes? Local shop? Newspaper? Internet? Trademes looking awfully dodgy nowadays.

You need leather or cordura trousers as well. Denim does NOT hang together at motorway speeds or even 70k very well at all.

2 Stroke engines require more thourough maintenance more regularly than a 4 stroke, hence the comment about that being high ks. High km multi (i.e four cylinder bike) will likely be in better condition than a high km single.

Trademe is only as dodgy as you let it be.

Boots: 150 - 700
Gloves: 70 - 500
Helmet: 200-2400
Trousers: 299 - 799

Well I can't comment on the fxr much but i started out on an RG when i learnt to ride. It was the best little bike i ever could have had. The 98 model is pretty reliable but the 2000 model has a reputation for blowing up. My mate with a bike shop had 3 (2000 models) through his shop in 6 months needing a rebuild. Like the guys said, get it checked mechanically if your not sure. I put about 60k on mine and it was still going strong, but i kept mine meticulously maintained with only the best synthetic oil, regular services etc etc. Whatever you buy, good luck. :ride:

My first bike was an FXR so I am biased.
I may know of an FXR for sale in CHCH -one of my workmates. I won't know if it is still for sale though till next week when I go back to work.

Welcome to the site mate. I'd really advise saving up for the gear as opposed to risking it. Just read some of the other threads on here for explanations why. :wavey:
