That's hilarious. Long but hilarious.
A good example of knee jerk politics

The new bulbs require more energy to create, and contain mercury.
i'm not entirely convinced......

Meanwhile the councils and Governments continue to do things like light our cities so they can be seen from space.

Yip the green bitch lectured us in uni, a 4th year engineering class, and tried to sell solar panels as a brilliant solution...... failing to forget the many heavy metals that go into their construction.

solor panels are awesome - free energy :D
if only if they wernt so damn expensive :P
If I build a house, its going to have alot of solar pannels on it. I love getting stuff for free (minus the initial costs).

Too bad solar panels require more energy to manufacture than they can produce in their lifetime :-((((

Some green idiot on Sunrise this morning dismissed the mercury issue by saying that we put mercury thermometers in our mouths every day and they're much worse. Bullshit!!! I haven't owned a mercury thermometer for more than a decade and the one we do have (digital) gets used about three or four times a year.

I may have heard the same doofus on the radio.
He was questioned about mercury leakage into landfills (a huge issue). His come back was that lots of mercury thermometers are thrown out.
??? Hmmm, wouldn't 98% be disposed of in a very controlled manner as hospital waste? And would the volumes be anywhere near as high as the turnover of lightbulbs per annum?

Point being? That it would be ok to make things toxic because people thought them away anyway?

Yes - also I have about 100 light bulbs in my house.....ever so slightly more than the number of mercury thermometers.

No! The exact opposite.
The greenies want to force these things on us, and have pie-in-the-sky ideas of how the down-sides will be dealt with.
No matter how many toxic bulb recycling station are set up - many people will still just chuck them in their normal household rubbish.
Perhaps sad, but that's reality.
For the power savings these bulbs give, why not just build another freakin' wind farm?
(Or get rid of that smelter to which the Bauxite is shipped from OZ (using diesel...))

Anyone want to try replacing the light in their fridge with one of those things?
And the flickering effect gives some people migraines (I'm told).
And, ultimately, where do the greens egt off, banning the old sort. By all means encourage people to use the new ones. But banning the old ones is way beyond what any government should have power to do.
I use some of the new ones, in palces where I don't want to ahve to change them often. But broken ones just go in the rubbish, I don't recycle (except for the inorganic collections , of course) . I can't be having with sorting rubbish at my time of life.

It's not up to NZ, Australia is pressuring us to ban them so they can bring in their ban. Something to do with Trans-tasman trade laws.
So it wasn't our idea, it was theirs.

Ironically, it's the inefficiency of incandescent bulbs that I rely on to heat my carbon fibre curing oven

I'm going to be stocking up on incandescent buls before they're phased out. I don't want powersavers in our bathroom fittings, and the dimmers in the master bedroom and lounge are there for a purpose.
But you're right - it is insanity.
Their figures of power saving seem to be based on the average number of lightbulbs in a NZ house (28?) and an assumption that they'll all be on at once.
Also (furthermore), they forget that lighting is not a big part of the typical household power usage - hotwater and heating would be more. In our household, the PS3 would use more than the lights. In any case, who the fuck are 'they' to tell me what I can and cannot do? I pay my power bills, so I'll use the power for whatever I want to.
Fukkem. :Pokey:
I think I'll go and turn some lights on right now, kill a few baby furseal whales.
