This may have been done before but I am too stunned to care.

I thought it would be kinda cool to get a personalised plate for my new bike and so rang the PP people yesterday to throw my idea at them and get a price etc... $749 ????

$749 ? How ? Why ? It costs $26 to replace your plates if they are lost or stolen... so therefore the cost of a set of plates to be manufactured is $26 or less. What in the hell is the remaining $723 covering besides lining the pockets of the PP company?

Last time I had anything to do with Personalised Plates my brother bought one for his car (admittedly that was 15 + years ago) and he paid $250 thereabouts... and even that was considered a high price to pay for two bits of tin. For $750 I can have my "idea" professionally sprayed all over my bikes tank and probably get change! :argh:

Geez that's steep. I paid about four hundy back in the late nineties.

I think the pricing is something to do with them being considered tradable as investment plates. Personnally I think that's a crock. In my experience most PPs only have significance to the original owner and are never traded.

I wanted to get one for Maha for his birthday. I was gobsmacked when the guy told me the price. I said I only want one, it is for a motorbike! That did not matter. Much as I love my man I can think of many better things to spend my money on frankly.

I bought a set for a car about 6 years ago, cost just under $500 then.

Anyone want a plate that says CHRLYS

Charlie was my nickname, the plate was on my MX5, it now resides on a shlf in the garage.

Less it is.
Last time I 'lost' a plate (it wasn't lost - just the wrong shape), it cost $8.

but just to transfer from one car to another without a replacement plate, it's the princely sum of 20c - I didn't have any change on me the last time I did this so the nice lady behind the counter at the AA paid it for me! top chick!:niceone:

Yeah I said the same thing - I figured surely for a motorbike it would be less than a car but apparently your paying for the 'right to own that particular combination of letters' and therefore the price stands.

I reckon they are outta their minds - it appears that nowadays P Plates are only for those with more money than a bull can sh*t

yea, and you can't even get the one with small writing on them for bikes :(

I checked it out too , but yea , 750 is too much.

My ideas for spending $750:

1. Buy a new meaty exhaust

2. Buy a Set of new sticky tyres

3. Do the Coro Loop 9 times :niceone:

Well, lining the pockets of the PP company is probably the PP company's primary directive <_<

If it's for your bike it's all of a sudden one piece of tin - and you could then argue it's twice as expensive... :eek5:

Anyone know what the $750 covers? I mean, obviously it can not be the fabrication of the plate itself - must be some bureaucratic overhead, in which case I guess $750 is pretty cheap considering what other bureaucratic overheads ring in at...
Also, I have seen plates that seem to be homemade - what are the requirements for a numberplate here in NZ?

Bingo.

The cost of the plate is about $28, the rest of the cost is purchasing the right to "own" that particular combination of numbers/letters etc. for whatever use you want it for, be it car, bike, etc.

Its funny browsing through some of the plates for sale and the amazing amounts some people are asking for plates that I cant really imagine people wanting to buy.

My Mum got one for Dad when they first came out, think it was $150 way back then.

Dad's no longer with us so it's sitting gathering dust.

Anyone interested in the plate BRYAN let me know.

$750 is a bloody ridiculous price and it's getting harder and harder to get a combination that resembles what you want.

Personalised plates? Gahh! They should be banned.

The purpose of a registration plate should be to clearly and unambiguously identify a motor vehicle. Personalised plates significantly compromise that task.

They also demonstrate the ineptitude of many people in applying rudimentary naming conventions. I suspect that folks who name their children "Cleeshaye" or "Shithead" (google these if you don't believe me) also have an attraction to vanity plates. And vice versa.

It's the laws of supply and demand. To see the future go to the UK where they can cost tens of thousands of pounds.

I got mine for less than $500 for my car when I first moved to NZ. Then transferred the personal plate to my bike in 2006. I still have the car plates if I want to put them back on a car at a later date though.

If it's not how you spell your name, why bother? I am amazed at times by commercial businesses who have different names for their business and web site. And have then squandered more hard-earned dosh for a six character plate that says something else again. Don't people get branding or identity?

Best couple I saw were in the old car magazines parts for sale,as follows -MOTSUX,GMSUX,was about 15yrs ago.

Old boss had a plate for our work vans, plus his own car about 1995 ish, thought good adds for business, except his car was cryptic and noone new what the hell it meant, except him when he bought it,weird sense of humour.Had a few beers one night after work,a funeral director was with us,we talked about a few plates for his vehicles,we came up with-DEAD,
DIED,DEATH,DYING,DEATH1,2,3 etc,and the one for cemetery BURYED,and crematorium BURNT.

what are the requirements for a numberplate here in NZ?
This is from a taken from a post on a different site (http://www.vask.org.nz/index.php/topic,10041.0.html)where there's a discussion about Personalised Plates. The issue there is about the Euro spec plates (longer than normal with a pic). PP charge $399 (not personalised) and germanplates.co.nz (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/germanplates.co.nz) charge $29(USD).

The relevant portions (http://interim.legislation.govt.nz/libraries/contents/om_isapi.dll?clientID=231605003&infobase=pal_statutes.nfo&jump=a1986-006&softpage=DOC) are Sections: 8, 9, 9E2, 14 & 17.

Section 8: The registrar shall register your vehicle and issue 'original' plates.

Section 9: Personalised plates. Of note are 9.2: The Registrar may enter into a contract with any person entitling that person to dispose of the right to receive personalised registration plates. & 9.4: There shall not be more than one contract under this section in force at any one time. Meaning, Personalised Plates have a legislated monopoly of the registration process and the issuing of 'original' p/plates.

Section 9E2: Details that only symbols etc. approved by the registrar (Ministry of Transport), can be displayed on a plate.

Section 14: Deals with how the form and colour of the plates. Any changes by the Transport Minister and announced in the Government Gazette.

Section 17: Deals with unauthorised, obscure and deceptive plates. i.e bogus rego, deceptive characters such as the Mini I saw Friday night, ÜITIÜ. The fine for this is $200.

As for the plate description, that's detailed here (http://interim.legislation.govt.nz/libraries/contents/om_isapi.dll?clientID=231605548&infobase=pal_regs.nfo&jump=r1995-136%2fs.2&softpage=DOC&wordsaroundhits=6#JUMPDEST_r1995-136/s.2): Specifically colour and letter/number combination. For non p/plates one is limited to embossed silver on black or embossed black on retro-reflective white. It doesn't even mention the size of the plate, I haven't found those regs yet.

That's all the applicable legislation for rego plates in NZ. You are required to register a vehicle and receive the plates. It doesn't say anywhere that you cannot affix a facsimile thereof. Should wish to present your recent plate as silver on black, you're within the law, unless it's ap/plate.

However they can have you on the additional characters and/or symbols as per Section 9E2. But as long as the plates meet the criteria re colour and material, they can't touch you.

Bumping up.

Was looking at a plate and chucking ideas around, wanted & could get GSX86,but that would only be good for bike at present,so thought YNOT,nope n/a but a few variances, then surname(5 characters max for bike)but most taken bugger, then eureka something simple "I BT IT" stands for I Beat It,for beating cancer, corny as but wtf.Wanted to add message but can't on the bike, then afterwards was playing with YNOTZ available so have option on either as plate not manufactured yet,so small time to change yet if wanting too.
