Hi everyone,
Have a street fightered CBR600, has the original dash removed. Testing station reckon I need to have some way of knowing the indicators are on, and a high beam warning light type thing.
Thinking about wiring up some LED's, now is it simply a matter, for the indicators, wiring them up in series with the indicator wires? Not too sure yet about the high beam one.
Any thoughts would be good

You should be able to get some appropriate globes and bezels (*or LEDs and LED holders) from the likes of Jaycar Electronics or Deek Smeeth, or mebbe even the crappy SuperCrap Autos.
If you use LEDs, you'll need some resistor so you don't burn them out (LEDs work at lower voltages than auto bulbs).

Thems the rules.
Fabricate yourself a sweet little light panel out of a bit of alloy. Note re turn signals only one is required to show they are working (must light for both L & R though) but my last bike was like this a a pain as it does not indicate which one you left on!

What difference does that make? [insert spudwhat emotidweebicon here, if it existed] On the Hornet, don't you just push the indicator button in to cancel?

If you want to use one bulb for both (instead of one for each), I suspect you'll have to have a diode in each wire coming from each indicator, so the current going to the panel bulb doesn't make the opposite indicator go.

In answer to your question - the LED is wired in parallel to the indicator. That is, run a wire from the indicator bulb to the LED. This wire must have a resistor in it to limit the current to the LED or you will eff it instantly in one single bright flash. Many LED "lamps" have the resistor built in. If it doesn't say anything about a resistor, then it doesnt have one. You can dim LEDs by adding more resistors.
while LEDs are very cool, they are also very bright. VERY bright!
Go to http://dse.co.nz and search for "12v lamp bezel"
same on http://jaycar.co.nz
Consider also, it is possible to make anything into a "light" by putting an LED behind it. So you can get a weird shaped piece of perspex and rear-light it with an LED, and you have the new-cool art-nouveau panel lamps. I did this (not on a bike) with some polished alloy+perspex+LEDs. This was a lot of fun.

The wires should already be there, surely? From the previous OEM instrument panel. Or was the wiring stripped out?

Can you see the back of the front indicators. If so, drill a small hole in the rear of each and cover with a bit of coloured transparent tape (marker pen!).
Then you can see the light flashing (or not). Front bulb gone, no light, rear bulb gone, double speed flash.
It is , in the words of the act "a suitable device to indicate to the driver that a lamp has failed".
Of course the fact that you can SEE the front indocators flashing away is neither here nor there.

Not really....
How often do you see a bike with it's indicator left on? What if someone pulls out thinking you are turning?
They may have saved a life.

And most of the time I see it its on bikes with these warning lights...... go figure

unless of course you dont buy a superbright led

Only when im going down the motorway, otherwise no .. i haven't sorry .
I just hate when you spend a lot of time and effort and $$ to get something nice then for a silly reason its not legal.. may not be silly to you but I don't think ive left my indicators on on my bike before, forgotten to indicate yup never left em on tho.

its a cavemans idea but atleast u dont have to wire anything up. and you could have fun designing wat to do with it

1..Ixions idea is as cunning as a.. well it's cunning. !
2..DB points out LEDS need resistors and should be wired in parallel.
Use a resistor between 500-1200 ohms for a good result. Dont worry about voltage or wattage ratings.
3..Do you have a flasher relay that clicks ? argue it's an AUDIBLE warning device. The law does not say it has to be visual.
another one you may need to watch out for is the speedo needs to be lit when the lights are on. especially if you have chucked it in favour of a cycle computer.

I reckon Ixion has the best idea so far, cheap and easy.
I got stuck with this problem for my bike. I mounted a warning bulb into the top of the headlight. Drilled a small hole and fitted it, looks okish. Used two diodes (one coming from each indicator) and one bulb with mount from Dik Smiff, got the tiniest diodes I could get from Jaycar. Dik Smiff only had huge things which were as big as a pencil sharpner. Works ok, but to tell the truth, I never look at the dam thing as I can see the indicators when they flash. The high beam warning light came already set into the headlight, no diode, just an ordinary bulb mounted in there.
(You might just be able to make out the indicator warning bulb on the top of the headlight in my profile pic).
You will need to run a couple of wires from the indicators which means you may end up having to cut into your wiring loom. So you could end up doing some tidying up work with a bit of heat shrink, as well as a bit of soldering of wires and diodes into the circuit.
Good luck

If you can see the indicators, can you put an LED poking out the back of them so you can see them from the riding position ? Tidy, simple, and clean.

If you want to use a single lamp, you can just connect it without diodes as long as you can mount the bulb without earthing either wire.
One wire goes to the left hand indicator, one wire goes to the right hand indicator.

True.
Yesterday in the cage, waiting to turn right downa side street.
Bike comes out of gas station further down the street, blinker indicating a left turn (why do people do that when they leave gas-stations when their angle they are siting shows they are NOT going to turn right?).
Bike pulls out and heads towards me, left bliker still going.
"Aha I thinks, he's got to give way to me as he's turning left"
BUT I also thought "Has he left the blinker on by mistake?"
So I sat there and sure enough, bike goes straight through, still with blinker going.
Easliy could have T-boned me if I took his blinker for face value and turned on front of him.

In my last job, the last km or so of the ride was down a suburban street with multiple streets off to either side. Apart from the very last interesection, I had the right of way at every intersection (about 6 or so, at a guess). I remember one morning thinking, "WTF is wrong with these homicidal fkn car drivers! They all seem intent on going despite the fact I have right of way!"
Then it clicked - I'd forgotten to turn my indicator off after the first intersection where I'd turned left on to this street. :pinch:
Man, did I feel such a cock. :o
