View Full Version : I got a wet arse!
We took our first ride out today on Maha's new bike. The weather was not so wonderful, rain off and on, but wet roads all the time. This bike is naked and obviously must throw a heap of water up at the back as the back of my jacket was saturated, as was the back of my legs. By the time I got off the bike when we got home, my backside was wet. The quilted thermal lining in the seat of my pants was wet, and I had a really cold bum! Interestingly my back was dry. This was after a return trip of 45 mins each way. Next weekend I am facing the reality of about 11 hours on the bike. It might even rain then too!
I wear Codura gear, and have never got wet wearing it before, even riding my own bike in some fairly heavy rain I have stayed dry. I realise I could take a half dozen HTFU tablets before venturing out in the rain as a pillion, but I am not good at taking pills at the best of times, so...
Can anyone suggest how I can prevent my arse from getting wet and cold, do I need to re-waterproof the pants? Do I have to buy some really sexy waterproof overpants to make me look even more like the good year blimp?
Any ideas?

Have you tried 'Depends' ?
Alternatively, a black rubbish sack with a couple of leg holes.

This bike has a huge rear mudguard though, the talk is to remove it and install a neat little tail tidy! It is weird I never got wet pillion on the Triumph, the water must be coming up the side walls of the tyre.

LOL, thank you. I had actually thought of the rubbish bag to be fair, I dont want to do depends, reckon they would get a bit uncomfortable after a few hours. Just seems weird that the seat of my pants are the only part of my gear failing the water proof test.
Heaven only knows what I am in for now after making a comment like that...LOL

Shut up! We need to get this ride done in a reasonable time. It would take 2 days to complete if I was riding too!

water could be getting through the stitching in the pant, if there an older well used pair.

Could be. Especially if the stitching has been under strain :devil2:

Yeah you may be right, they are 4ish years old. I would seal the seam with wax if I wore a canvas awning and the seams were leaking...LOL Any idea of how to seal pants seams?

I think your best bet would be to check over your kit for holes, bad scuffs etc. and make sure it is properly done up. it doesn't take much of a gap for alot of water to piss in. Gear seems to become less water proof with age too. You could try a re-waterproofing agent, I think revit do one. Otherwise it might pay to get some new good quality pants.

Hey don't know if it helps but when i brought my textile gear i got a pack with it. One is for cleaning it (which is meant to help the waterproofing too somehow) and the other is to waterproof it , its called NIKWAX -Tech Wash and TX.Direct.
But I havn't done alot of miliage yet to see how well it works.

I wonder if the water is running down the seat and pooling under your bum? Logic says that the only part of wet weather gear thats gonna wear out is the er underbum area. -Its the bit rubbing on the seat constantly.
I suspect you need to either buy new pants or waterproof the bum of ya old ones. -Be careful of you'll have a whole new problem

NO! I borrowed a mates pair and they split as I mounted onto the bike, bought another pair, they split dismounting off the bike! yes same day.
Get the waterproof overalls from a bike shop. I have a pair and they will keep you so warm and dry, If I'd known like 2-3 weeks ago you could have borrowed them...I moved them into storage.

I have a friend with old Cordura pants and jacket that leak but he simply wears PVC under the Cordura. So his pants and jacket will be wet but not his clothes. And wearing it underneath, no one will see the "classy yellow Warehouse gear"!

If you go with the tail tidy, get your self a Brazilian!
It wont stop you getting wet but you should be able to dry off quicker when you get home! :shifty: John.

This happened to the vifferbabe back when I had the FahrtSturm and we went for a ride to Roundabouta (the city formerly known as Tauranga) one Saturday. It wasn't a super wet day, and only her nether bits got wet. Like you, it was the spray from the back wheel, but in our case it was hitting the backpack, running forward onto the seat, where her leathers sucked it up.
The solution was going to be to buy a piece of mudguard from the wreckers and bolt it onto the FahrtSturm's skimpy mudguard. I had it all jackeed up when the vifferbabe came up with a better solution - buy another bike! The VFR has no problems with this. Sure, the mudguard may not be as sexy, but it is practical.
As for your pants - go to the supermarket (cheapest place I've found) and buy some Scotchgard - the green can, for waterproofing tents and outdoor equipment. Give your pants at least two coats, making sure you completely saturate the fabric each time, before allowing it to dry in between. Oh - and do it outside: the solvent is the same thing used for drycleaning, and it whiffs.

I only just cleaned and re-sealed (cost me about $50) my gear about 2 weeks ago, I hadn't used them up until yesterday... When I rode to Tokoroa and back in some pretty heavy rain. Was rather frustrated to find my pants were just as un-waterproof as before  So I know the feeling Mom! It's not nice:baby:
Hope you find an answer :)
