Thinking about it but would have to do the 3 northern points over Labour Weekend, so I'll see how the fuel prices go and how an already full riding program pans out.

Maybe the GC will take us pass 1 or to of the checkpoints...didn't last time I did both together though!

I'm keen to do this providing I've got a bigger bike (and the right kind of licence to go with it) by then. Probably do the W and S as day trips and then something more organised for the other 2.

Still not sure if I'm up for it as yet - makes for a big week of riding after the GC: http://andrew.l.thomson.googlepages.com/20064pointscompassrally

to be honest, I would rather ride 1000k a day for 10 days than ride all night. I did hope to do the GC this year but I am not prepared for it. I really need to sort my headlights out. I am REALLY bad riding in the dark because I just cant see anything. And when I say really bad I am talking about getting down to 1st gear to corner 65k corners!.

There are 5 points.

You register and get a card.
You ride round the county to pick up a playing card (which happens to be a stamp) from each of the four points (extreme points north, west, east and south of the north island)
Then you show up to privegiving and get the 5th card and play poker with it.

You have 3 1/2 weeks to pick up the 4 cards and have to be at the final checkpoint on a ceratin day. Works well for us cause the final is in Palmy.

Simple as that.

Would be an impressive holiday from Manawatu destination.Cruise to Rahotu, then up north (Whangerei)for day 1,to top and back down to east coast day 2,and home next day, then leisurely final day return to southern point.

Or to Rahotu and back to Taumaranui to east coast,up to top of island, then to bottom.Imagaine the haul from Kaitaia to Palmy?

Brother did Kaitaia to Hawera in one day in his van years ago took 9 hours or so.

So it won't take long for the head to dry out from copious rain expected?

Shit 11hrs seems fine given conditions, just a prick of a place to get to is Rahotu, can't just flick up SH1and return,be a leisurely 5 day trip the east, west and north parts.Need a bloody good hand after those 4 cards given to pay for fuel.Be close to 2700km all up,at the end of the game.

To true, but that was my miserley back pocket speaking, was purely monetary, the ride will be great, good weather a bonus and a royal flush the bonus at the end.

Would make an ideal holiday if ya could arrange it though, even from Rahotu and stop at say Whanga pub, then up north, back to Warkworth next day, then over to east coast for a day or two, home.

Haven't got that week off at the moment and will be in Turangi on the 20th anyway. Still dunno if I'm gonna do it yet - extra 3,000km just after the GC. Plus, will probably be just me on my lonesome (doesn't worry me too much) as blue bandito is gonna be a daddy sometime around then (he's still doing GC though).

Yeah I think so too,it's not the distance putting me off it's just a financial thing coupled with the fact that there are some things a really want to do to the bike , i've had it for a while now and have'nt gotten very far with that yet and would'nt mind seeing a bit of it sorted before xmas, pretty sure i'll still have it come the next four points anyway but no time like the present..

Yeah it is a bummer but such is life, gotta think a bit longer term if I want to get any decent milage over xmas, gotta think about rubber for the car too.
Speaking of xmas, a scoot through the east cape or at least part of might be an idea, plenty of time to sort that anyway.
You guys will have a blast and it'll be sweet if you fulla's hook up with some of the northerners on the way.

Did Lake Ferry today and apart from a few very small showers it turned out to be an awesome day for riding. Reasonably uneventful apart from Horse loosing his drive belt somewhere in the Hutt, got it back on his brothers ute i believe, it was a bugger but at least he managed to get to lake ferry for his card first and it wasnt Friday somewhere around the east cape that it happened. He should be up and running for next Friday 5.30 am start
Well i,m knackered so its off for some bueaty sleep

uneventful? The gps tracking overlaid onto the route plan is interesting. The plan was 439km. The track is 460ish! It was fun. Some good roads over that way and the weather was mint. I was almost convinced we were going to get very very wet at one stage there but it didnt turn into anything.
Harley was mint on the back and enjoyed the day. Someone needs to work on Jacobs taste in bikes - gave bonez something to brag about anyway.
The $52 tyres got a fairly decent workout and are coping just fine.

Bring on Friday!

As usual good company, food and hosbitality. And for the record we left on time. We failed to discover the whereabouts of Wherethefuckarewe tribe but had a good go at it with Gerble going left when the rest of the group going right, maybe another time perhaps. Both ways were no exits but obviously none of us can read road signs. Myself relying on my trusty mapbook and the usual suspects relying on Meanies GPS. Did stumble apon everyone at the metropolis that is Martonborough though.

Riding behind Horse coming down into Upper Hutt there was aloud "CRACK" and the Electra Glide suddenly grew a tail. To Horses credit he did manage to get the behemoth gracefully over to the verge without causing any havoc to following motorists. A few quick calls and recovery was organised. Probably was recovered quicker than Sarah was last week I should imagine.

Meanie was kind enough to escort me to Lances sis's for a late lunch and then a touch of lane spitting though the traffic to balmy Palmy. Couple of cokes at the Yods then of home.

Thanks all for an enjoyable days riding.

If not, tell Meanie that somewhere in under the key (not sure how far under the key - ie in the guts) there is a little circlip and this could have moved preventing the key from being pushed down far enough.
