View Full Version : #74 - Korea's Bucket

Korea
22nd June 2008, 19:46
Well, at long last here is Korea's bucket, coming to us by way of Shel Racing and carted down all the way from Auckland by F5Dave...

I present to you the RG/RX125 super-contender for last place in both B and A grades at next week's racing round at Slipway!
You just see if I don't!

Anyway, the bucket has actually been sitting idle since it arrived a couple of weeks ago - finally got around to doing something about it this week.
I gave it the works:
- charged the battery
- bump started it

Hmmm... bump starting seems pretty difficult...
Hmmmmmm... can't seem to find neutral for the life of me...

Finally after 20 runs up and down the street, success! However, engine dies whenever I let the clutch out.

Confused and at the end of my mechanical acumen, took it around to Skunk's for his professional opinion:
"Gearbox is reverse pattern" :gob:
...hence the bike's reluctance to pull away in top gear... :bash:

Skunk next had the carb off in 2 seconds and gave it a stern blowie removing about a litre of water from the float bowl (yeah, my carbie is off a big rig).

Carb back on and the satisfying ringa-ding-ding of a happy 2 stroke was coaxed out of the 1980's vintage Yamaha RX125 engine on the 3rd bump.

Huge thanks to Skunk for his help, without which, let's be honest, I would still be scratching my bum right now.

What's next? Well, throttle cable has about 2 inches of play, but otherwise the bike is rideable. It's got a belt to hold the battery in place - keeping it looking 'club racer'. Already given some thought to a gaudy colour scheme (see below) but that'll come after everything else is working and it has had a chance to prove itself at the next round.

Roll on next weekend!

None of my buckets will ever have names. The ZX1R comes close as I refer to it as the Queer Kwaka.

Good to see it moves under it's own power Korea!

Awww, it's already pretty tame but we'll see what it can do next weekend :msn-wink:
Now, about learning reverse pattern shifting...

Except the AX100 has a race pattern shift standard. Putting the lever on backwards makes it road pattern. Korea's is on backwards on a road pattern box so it's race pattern...

Korea
23rd June 2008, 21:39
Here, this photo of an actual RX125 should explain things...

The gear lever points forward (standard) but on the RG bucket, the shift lever is pointing backwards (the RG frame has the footpegs further rearward)

The gearbox shaft rotates clockwise (standard shift = toe up) to shift up, however this translates to toe down (still going clockwise you see) when it's facing the other way.

Clear as mud, eh?

Hey, looking good. Thanks for this thread by the way -- stopped me from throwing my new-old C50 Cub in the bin when I thought it was so gutless it wouldn't even pull my small arse downhill. Cubs have race-pattern shift too! :D Explains why I couldn't find neutral either.

F5 Dave
25th June 2008, 17:40
Nah neutral is easy. Put it into 1st then push the lever with your heel which will select another neutral.

Then hold the throttle open for about 4 seconds until the revs build up & take your foot off the lever.

Who says cubs can't wheelie?!

That's exactly what I've been doing -- unintentionally. Idle speed too high, gearchange heavy, clutch maladjusted. Have to hold on rear brake while I shift into first otherwise it's a wheelie every time :D

Well, after watching the weather report in the vain hope things would get better - the weather conditions actually got worse.
Up to 130kmph wind warnings, torrential downpours and flooding - I took my HTFU juice, protected the RG/RX's open carbie with some sheets of plastic and had the battery charged just in time to meet Skunk and the boys with the super-trailer to take us up the back of the wind turbine to Bucket Nirvana - which was more like bucket hell given the conditions.

<object width="425" height="350"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WCeeYJKnhMU"> </param> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WCeeYJKnhMU" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350"> </embed> </object>

Got to the track and hooked up the battery (total loss ignition) and unwittingly shorted it! The insulation around the wires started smoking and I thought my day was over before it had begun - but luckily after pulling the plug and sorting it, the bucket got started.

Practice was tentative, given the waist-high water and challenging freshwater fish for the best line - I was the only squid out there.
In fact, I think I was the first to throw it down at the carpark end - lost the front and earned me the bum-pants.

Two laps later, I lost the clutch altogether and spent the rest of the day raping the gearbox and starting from the carpark - which was fine as long as I was upright and moving, except that didn't last long either:

Race one and I was all cockyness and cheek - because I had no clutch, I started from the carpark but was catching up the group after about a lap. Overtook 1, 2, 3 riders... 'wow, this thing's grea~' ...and dropped it at the far end - this time lost the rear gassing it up too hard too early. Sullenly watching everyone I passed pass me back and then, adding insult to injury, lapping me as I tried to bump start without clutch again... :brick:

Rest of the day was more of the same - in between me grappling with the reverse shift pattern and wringing the poor engine in the regions of 15,000rpm.

All in all, learnt a heck of a lot of lessons but the most important one: go fast = good, go too fast and fall off = not good; you lose.

See you at the next meet (hopefully a little dryer)

Trudes
29th June 2008, 18:06

Hey, thanks for giving me a kicking to get motivated. Been working too hard and poor bucket has been suffering alone in the dark (and having only been ridden once in the worst conditions imaginable - talk about the acid test!)

Tonight, I managed to fix the clutch cable - no more clunking through the gears and I'll maybe even be able to start from the starting line! :niceone:
Charged the battery and got it started after only a bit of legging it up and down the alleyway behind our place - what a trooper!
Lastly some minor adjustments to the brake / clutch levers.

Can't wait to test it out.

However, bike needs some love to get running proper:
- throttle cable has excessive play (think half the grip turn)
- chain is hanging off (stretchy? OR just needs adjusting)
- clutch is slipping a little when hard on the gas. Not very good...
Not sure if I have the aptitude to do the clutch and throttle. Suggestions?

Other than that, brakes appear to work well and suspension is OK.

Roll on Kaitoke~ :woohoo:

F5 Dave
4th March 2009, 09:09
Sounds like Th cable too long or out of adjustment. Can move the nipple down the cable but needs some tools/setup. Can't help atm, broken bits on body slowing me down.

Clutch, assume at least some slack in cable? Or is it badly adjusted? If there is some slack then inside to fix, have some suggestions if so.

That should be able to be sorted at the track. I'm a little short of time at the moment otherwise I'd offer to do it. I'll have my tools at the track.

Bit of an update on #74:

Clutch still out of commission, however took this time off between rounds to work on the bling-factor...

Want to spray the frame when I get time but that's a big mission so for now the wheels will suffice:

Whipped the wheels off to begin the prep (remember kids, in painting -preparation is 99% of the gig).

Now, how to get the existing paint off the rims? Sandpaper - a potential 10 hour job? OR...

Gasket stripper! (feel free to cringe). Yes, gasket stripper melts paint off metal in seconds, burns exposed skin and scorches your eyes! :niceone:

A spray here and there followed by scrubbing with steel wool and the rims, reduced to bare metal came up shiney as a shiney thing.

Next, a couple of layers of metal primer (light, even coats, people) after masking off the tyre (don't have no tyre irons, but deflating and sticking tape in the bead sufficed).

Finally, a couple of coats of the most excellent Warehouse Metallic Blue - a bargain at $12.99!

The finished result? Well, a bit brighter blue than indicated on the can - and with the front fender still in red, looks a bit like a Superman colour scheme...

See you at the next bucket meet - I'll be the guy in the cape... :wari:

Pic #1 - before
Pic #2 - stripping
Pic #3 - primer
Pic #4 - layer 1 of 2
Pic #5 - team super-zuki!
Pic #6 - after (amazing what a bit of paint will do, eh?)

What's actually wrong with the clutch? ie what's needed to fix it?

Seems to have seized up. The clutch lever was very tight at the end of last meeting - and it's not disengaging. Not sure if it's a cable thing (cable is frayed - could use a replacement v.soon). I'll have a proper go at it tonight and see if I can find out more... Will let you know.

Replace the cable, pull the clutch cover off and take out all of your plates one by one out of the basket.
Give them a good clean up, reinstall and also replace your gearbox oil.

Nice work on the wheels.

Yam plates of that vintage do that esp if there has been some moisture.

As Chris sez & should be fine. esp cable.

Skunk

I'd free the clutch cable at both ends and check it's movement. It should be quite free. If not replace it.

Replace the cable, pull the clutch cover off and take out all of your plates one by one out of the basket.
Give them a good clean up, reinstall and also replace your gearbox oil.
Drain the gearbox oil first...

If you need a hand give me a yell.
