Mondays At Panmure.

Im starting up the learning nights again as it keeps being requested.

When - August 4th
Where - Panmure Mobil next to the big roundabout.
Time - Depart at 7pm
Who - anyone welcome to come learn/improve their riding skills.

This will be run every 2nd Monday for now as its winter, during summer we will decide as a group weather to keep it fortnightly or make it weekly over the summer period. If its raining it will be cancelled. I'll post up the following date when the next session will be.

More towards summer we will be at some stage covering wet weather riding. Monthly short rides will be decided on case by case. Our choice as a group to have it on a Monday night or weekend day.

Please note I am not a qualified instructor and this is voluntary, so any info given is entirely up to the individual as to weather they accept it or not. I will NOT tolerate dangerous riding, showing off or stunts.

ALL riders who attend have to participate in the exercises, I too will also demonstrate the exercises and give things a go. We are all bikers and are there to meet others, have good laughs and fun along the path of riding and learning. :headbang:

Just a note for those concerned - When we meet at Panmure Mobil, we will ride for about 5 mins to the location. The streets are lit. This is not like AWNMR where there is open road riding at the start of the session.

The open road night riding is a seperate thing, reason for this is because not everyone is comfortable riding at night or on unknown roads. We will stick together as a group when we ride etc.

here is the link for our online clubroom lol
http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/group.php?groupid=56

At this stage I still can't ride and am still typing one handed  have been pillion here and there but my shoulder and arm are still giving me grief. Thats why I set the date in August, But it looks doubtful that I will be riding by then.

No worries Portokiwi :Punk:

I dont quite believe in the whole "Mentor" status etc. You can be riding a 250, and be an experienced rider for years.

Its like this, We all have some experience at riding, we have skills, keep an open mind try new tyechniques, its just a matter of finding your own riding groove and becoming that step closer where the bike and you are one.

What works for one rider and their bike may not suit you and your bike.....I look at it like this "every bike and rider has their own special powers" :chase:

Thanks for that I look forward to going... was riding since 16 but after getting hit twice both at night last one was in the rain. Put me off riding for about 4 years. Only started back overseas only a year and a bit ago only riding when I was on leave. I am not ashamed to say that riding at night or in the wet weather puts my balls in my chest. I have had too the last week due to the crappy weather here in Auckland. Day time I am ok just getting use to the 900. We need a reverse on these bikes lol.

For me I used to ride every friday night after i finished work at 9pm, best way to wind down for the week. Little steps and youll get there.

But in all seriousness, those who are thinking of attending, DO IT! I came along to these when i was just learning the very basics, and it made me the rider i am today. One of the very reasons why the old KB mentor scheme was shut down. Mentoring is about helping people to reach their potential safely. Scraping pegs is never doing it safely as that is the last resort action when things have already gone wrong.

For the record that was on a GN, so sod all lean angle got the pegs down. And for me it was about learning and confidence getting further over in lean, learning where my internal gyroscope said "NO MORE", and where the bikes safe working limits were, building confidence in my cornering so that as you say, when things go wrong, i have the confidence to know that i can get further over if needed, and know how she'd react to various inputs.
With the GN it was heel touchdown, then later peg touchdown was the furthest i took it in the controlled environment and relative safety of 1st gear circles in an empty culdesac. Having that confidence in my machine and my own abilities has saved my butt on a few occasions when i have found myself in an "oh-shit" situation.

For the record i am not encouraging people to ride around with pegs down on the road, and did not mean for it to come across as such. If you ride at the limits (of either yourself or your machine), you have no room left if something doesnt go exactly as you expected. I do however believe it is important to know where those limits are, so that you can ride within them, and know that you are able to apply them if needed.

A few points of my own,

The mentors are obviously not going to tell people to scrape their pegs, and the exercises and easily achievable without getting anyway near that low, even on a GN. But the point of going is to push beyond what you already know and try something new. It's how we learn. It's why on group rides people's skill will increase in leaps and bounds because they push themselves, just takes the individual to know when enough is enough.

And also, on a cruiser you tend to scrape pegs extremely easily. It's why they have an extra plate of metal welded to the bottom of the foot peg, and why the foot peg can lift up. It's hardly dangerous, it's a good indication of your maximum lean angle before you start scraping the frame of the bike, that's your limit on a cruiser.

I don't see where all the angst against the mentor rides is coming from, everyone rides safely. Everyone comes back next week beaming about what they'd learned from the week before and how it'd improved their riding, avoided a potential accident, whatever. People bin, very rarely. Every bin on a training ride i've seen myself was pretty much at a standstill and it just falls over. (Except my own bin.. that was my fault)

Anyway,

I'll probably be attenting the Monday's aswell then, looks good :headbang:

I rather just turn up help out and leave it at that. The person chosen will be confirmed at the first meeting of MAP.

If the weather looks doubful or any hint of rain it will be called off. The next session will be held 2 weeks from the 4th of August..

7PM AT PANMURE MOBIL.

The DR will be there!!:whistle::whistle::whistle:

This will be an insight on what to look for when buying your next bike, and also how a bike reacts when something brakes such as front fork seals/leaks...front brakes warped, and well past their use by date, not to mention how to push start a bike.

Apart from the motor ticks, everything else is in miserable functioning order of some kind. And you will be asked to try various exercises using the bike. This will demonstrate how a faulty bike reacts to something like emergency braking. If the bike is dropped, its fine. (just dont snap the brake or clutch leavers)

THERE WILL BE NO STUNTING, OR STUPID BEHAVIOUR while riding the DR!! this is purely used under strict supervision and anyone who misuses the bike will be told to leave.

See ya there!!

You have permission to demonstrate how a stoppie can go wrong but please ensure it is in slow motion so we can capture the moment.

Want to borrow my bicycle?
