Press release just issued by Metservice:
(Put yr thermals on and take care out there!)
Issued at 12:42pm 24-Jun-2008
SQUALLY WESTERLIES
Chilly southerly winds laced with rain, sleet, hail and snow are sweeping across New Zealand. MetService forecasters expect these southerlies to move off tonight, and be replaced by squally westerly winds on Wednesday.
"We are in for several days of squally westerlies," commented MetService Weather Ambassador, Bob McDavitt. "They are expected to bring blustery winds to western parts of the South Island and all the North Island, with gales in exposed places like the Manawatu Gorge, Tararua District and Golden Bay at times.
Winds may reach severe gale force when enhanced by cold fronts moving onto New Zealand on Wednesday afternoon and Friday. These fronts are also likely to be accompanied by brief periods of heavy rain.
Mr. McDavitt added that the combination of windy and sometimes wet weather will occasionally produce hazardous driving conditions. "It's not good for travelling. People who need to travel this week should check the latest weather forecast and warnings, and road conditions."

We had some very powerful gusts followed by an intense but short hailstorm complete with thunder and lightning - that was a couple of hours ago. Pretty cool if that thing has made Wellington already.

Been and gone.
Yeah, that's pretty much how it was down here. 20 mins of AWESOME weather (when you're sitting in your office looking out the window) and then 'gone with the wind'.
Ok, so we now have hail in the rain, and wind to blow your house down if you were a little pig and did not use bricks...LOL
Hi to winter! Better be over by Saturday

Gah... just spent the morning cutting down two trees when they fell and rested against the fence ---- mere inches from my bike!!
Dam NZ weather... it's all bark and no bite... where is the huge blizzards? Massive snow storms that cut of whole towns?
Flipping eck, if it's going to be 'nasty' at least make it worthwhile... *sigh*

Visit Russia during the winter, if you're lucky enough :) , can get -35C in Moscow or 45cm of snow in one night (both happened few years ago, not all the time, got 'lucky', actually a lot of people were unable to start cars). Or just go to Syberia, those are pretty much everyday events in some parts :2thumbsup
