View Full Version : Going solo on my South Island trip. 29th Jan - 14th Feb
Ms Piggy
6th January 2005, 13:06
Due to a change in cirmcumstances I am now riding solo for my trip down South. :ride:
Anyhoo - anyone who would like to hook up and ride with me at any stage would be welcome. PM me if you wanna meet up & I can give you my mobile #. These are all new roads for me, so any guidance is very welcome.
Please note: I've only been riding for just over a year and I am on a 250cc bike, so this will be scenic as opposed to speed riding.
My plan is as follows:
29th Jan - arrive in Picton at 11amish off The Lynx and ride through to Nelson via Queen Charlotte Drv.
30th Jan & 31st Jan- ride through to Takaka and stay in that area for 2 days.
1st Feb - ride through to Motueka & stay there the night.
2nd Feb - 5th Feb - not sure really. Maybe ride to Karemea and the surrounds.
5th Feb - ride over the Akaroa and stay there the night, possibly with a whole lot of other KBers.
6th Feb - (depending on the weather) ride over the Haast Pass and then back over the Lindis Pass up to Dunedin or whatever takes my fancy really.
I want to stay in Dunedin a few days and also have to be back in Christchurch for a family wedding by the 11th Feb.
14th Feb - Crossing back over to Wgtn on a 7pm crossing.

Scenic is always better than speed. Because after all, it's about the ride.
I feel envious. I don't have enough annual leave to do all the things I want to do bikewise... [sobs, like some pitiful mummy's boy]
Hopefully the weather will be better by then.

You're a pitiful mummy's boy. :Pokey:
Yeah, I'm just saying that because you've got an STX 1300.
Yeah, I know I just sabotaged any hope of ever getting a ride on it.:bye:

Too many favourite bits, too little time...
I must go down to the SI again, cross that lonely sea to the SI,
And all I ask is motorbike and a road to steer her by;
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the handlebars shaking,
And a light mist on the hills' face, and a gray dawn breaking.

Just so I can stalk you I’ve booked on the Lynx 14th feb 7pm from Picton to Wgtn.
My CYT (cute young thing) insists on coming along on all of my stalking missions so look out for us.
Really, I booked a week ago. :innocent:
Sadly (& this is the hard but to admit on this site) but Bec has insisted we go camping hence take the van & will be around the Nelson –Taka area from the 8th.
I’m going to hate doing the Hill in the Van again.
Have a good time & tell us about it on the trip back. Worse case if the CB has a slight aneurism you can put it on the train to picton/txt us & can put in the back of the van for the return.

I must go down to the SI again, to the vagrant bikers life,
To the Takaka Hill and the Kaikoura windies, where the wind's like
a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And a long bath and a good shag when the long ride's over

Anyone considering going down the Coast, would be best to check the weather first. On a good day its a fantastic trip, in the wet its OK in a cage, beautiful even, but on a bike it tests the best of wet weather gear to the max.
if there is no need, other than for the view(ei no friends to meet with on the coast) the Inland Scenic Route is a good road to cruise down the middle of the South Island

Hi Guys and Gals,
Just a reminder that I'm heading South this coming Saturday (I'm sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo excited!!! Can ya tell? Can ya tell? Huh? Huh? Can ya!??   ).
It would be really great to have some riding buddies along the way.
Stevo and Chick'n'Charge are meeting me on Saturday morning off The Lynx at 11am and I'm riding through to Nelson that day.
If you'd like to meet up with me at some point just PM me before Friday or text me after then (my mobile # is in my profile notes).
Cheers CSL :2thumbsup

karamea to akaroa is a decent day's ride presumably thru Lewis Pass.
We did a 3 dayer a couple of weeks back: chch to Fox Glacier, Fox to Wanaka, Wanaka Chch. It pissed down from Fox to Haast. not pleasant... but the ride from Greymouth to Fox is FANTASTIC..... generally if its shitty one side of the island, the other is OK.

I am so jealous...
It will be fantastic.
Stay upright at all times while riding (I have observed that it helps for a more pleasurable experience).
It will be hot and that norwester in particular can dry you out very quickly. Make sure you stop often and replenish your liquids as well as those of your bike.
I am so jealous.

One suggestion if the weather is good on the coast go all the way down Hasst, Wanaka ,Cardrona, Queenstown, ect ect and do Akaroa when goin up east coast. Mussel Inn 10 mins north Takaka a must, Blackball Hilton Cardrona Pub, Buller Gorge, Westport Graymouth early in Morning when mist cuming of the road, Lewis better than Arthurs, Both hot pools. Queenstown Milford Sound, Catlins.

Well Cath arrived in Nelson OK.
Coffee at my place then off to Takaka.
Lunch stop in Motueka at the Rolling Pin Bakery (My cousins place and he rides a Guzzi).
Off over the Hill and every car we came up behind pulled over and let us past!
Must have past about 20 odd bikes/bikers and only 2 didn't wave :wavey:
We got to within 10k of Takaka and saw a guy in leathers running beside the road and a flash of red in a paddock.
Rider Down! :shit: :pinch:
While Cath was busy calling 111 I was over the fence into the paddock and it was not a pretty sight
Bits of red Ducati all over the place but fortunatly no bike blood was leaking.
Oh and there was a guy lying on his back 10m from the bike.
Injurys were mostly confined to the screen/side panels/blinkers and the battery came loose - The FOR SALE sign on the screen was a nice touch - may have to drop the price a bit now.
Oh the rider (John)...
Looked like a broken collarbone as he'd landed on his right shoulder fairly hard. Helmet just grass-stained up.
Got his helmet off and got him comfortable and shaded.
Cop went straight past with his lights on following a Guzzi, he may have been looking for the accident site but he may have just hated Guzzi's (understandable of course).
Ambo arrived and then a doctor arrived (got a shock off the electric fence). The helicopter was in the air before they were told not to come so they came anyway.
Diagnosed as broken collarbone and probably 2 ribs.
Mr Plod arrived.
Second doc arrived.
Helicopter arrived.
Morphine arrived.
Just needed a bbq and it would have been sweet :Punk:
John's mate (fellow KiwiBiker) got photos of all this :first:
Got John into the helicopter and he was off.
A van had been orginised for the bike and Cath and I were off into Takaka.
On the way home I passed the van with the bike on the start of the hill and after that no-one pulled over for me all the way home :confused2
They only pull over for Cath?
I don't smell or something do I?
Good to meet you Cath, have fun on the rest of your trip.
Hope it's not as exciting as this though...

Off to Hokitika tomorrow with a stop in Westport. I'm not going to Karamea now as I have a mate to catch up with. Will pop by Blackball though.
Been swimming & sweating. Betty & I are having fun but, riding alone does suck a bit at times.

Good idea - good ride up the hill and the place has amazing history and an unsual atmosphere - check out the top of the Denniston Incline (go left at the top of the hill) there is an shelter with photos and info board - the Incline was one of the greatest engineering feats of its time.

Shit I remember that place I musta been bout 10 at the time, the drive up was in fog could only see just past the frount of the car hood (near new Maxi) At the top of the hill all I remember is the old buildings left the way they were when the joint was deserted. There were no other people around, it had a very weird feeling and I clearly remember the fire house..... we pushed a half open door open and snuk in, the fire truck was still there as was most of the gear................... but I bet today its either been ransacked or comersialised either way it would be naffed.

Yeah I first went there about that age but there were still a few things operating - went down a working mine, and had a "shandy" in the little pub (yes, my first underage drink - in a West Coast pub of course) that was formally the grocery store that my Dad was born in the back of in 1918)

I have been there recently and there isnt much left - a lot has been ransacked as you suggest. There is still a few people living there and a Museum in the old school house. But there is still that eerie ghost town feeling that is hard to describe.
Cathy, if you can spare an hour it is worth the trip. Take the Karamea road, about 15ks north of Westport is Waimangaroa. Turn right (East) and go up the hill - its easy to find.

Yes I do confess, I was driven to Karamea! :o Well it was just that he had a big 4WD and a great thumping stereo!! :Punk:
So I arrived on Greymouth and met up with my friend Craig - he's a possum monitor and cruises all around the SI, he just happened to have a few days off.
So the very short story is: we drove to Karamea from Greymouth and back as far as Westport. We left Betty & his dogs at Craigs mates in Greymouth. We went and looked at the Pancake Rocks (oooooo ahhhhh) and saw dolphins in the surf, we went to the seal colony at Cape Foulwind (ooooo ahhh some more), we also went up to Denniston (OMG it's hopt & windy), we stopped at Grnity at a superb cafe/bar called Drifters. Arrived in Karamea and immediately went for a swim, then to the pub and then drove back to Westport.
Left Westport this morning and drove back to Greymouth, I picked up Betty and we rode over to Reefton (cruising through Blackball for a quick squizz, sadly I ran out oftime to stay there). In Reefton I met up with Kickaha and Diesel Pig (who had been waiting an hour - oooppppss) and we haeded off. I had fuelled up there and was told it was 31 degrees! It got hotter! And hotter! And hotter! It was actually too hot to ride! Also! I lost 1 of my side panels! The LH one - bugger!! :pinch: It must've blown off along the way, so someone on the road between Reefton & Culverden there is a newly painted side panel.
We were all reeeeeeeeaally hot by the time stopped to fuel up again at Culverden and so headed to the Hurunui River. Fuck it was nice. I promptly attempted to drown Kickaha (he started it!!) and I suceeded...well a few times anyway. :shifty:
Diesel Pig headed home and Kickaha and I stopped in at the Hurunui Pub for a cold one and a bit of food. Lovely in the shade.
From there we headed back to Rangiora.
All beautiful, gorgeous, lovely and fantastic. Now I am buggered! It was a hard ride today in that heat but, great.
Thanks to those of you who have kept in touch.
See some of you tomorrow. :)

I think the ratio of heads being shoved under water was about
Celtic Sea Lilys head 20
Kickahas head 1
I woke up about 7.45am and had told Neil I'd be round at 8am,but gambling on his inability to get out of bed before lunchtime didn't think a few minutes would make much different, rolled around to his place and he was ready and waiting so off we headed, just as we get into the Weka we hit the first traffic through the best part which holds us up a little bit but we get around that and head through to Culverden and gas up.
We head out of Culverden (after push starting Diesels pigs bike) and a few km down the road we hit the first roadworks at Mouse point with the lollipop men playing stop and go,we get the green and off we go,the ride up is pretty uneventful with us sticking around 110-120 and not getting held up by the traffic,we gas up at Springs and I ring Cathy and find she's still in Greymouth so we decide to ride through to Reefton to meet up,between Springs and Reefton there's more roadworks and grit spread on the road but nothing that isn't managable, arriving in Reefton we grab a drink and something to eat and hang about waiting for Cathy to show up,an hour later she shows up and grabs a drink before we head off.
I swap with Diesel pig and hop on his GSX1100ET,which has decided it needs a push to start, lucky for me I'm not doing the pushing in 31 degree heat, first impressions are a very linear power delivery and for a bike weighing well in excess off 200kg fairly easy to turn, perhaps helped by the wide bars,
compared to the XJ550 its a rocket twist the throttle in any gear at any speed and away it goes we cruise back through to springs and gas up again and head off to Culverden,by this time I think the temp is over the 31 degrees and even with a 110kmh breeze it's not much fun,so we head to the Hurunui river and splash about for a while and feel a hell of a lot better for it.
Diesel Pig heads back off to Rangiora to sort his starter and a minor carb problem while Cathy and I head off to the pub for some food and drink and then after that we head off back through Waikari the Weka and home, stopping off at Diesel Pigs place to show Cathy a fuel tank with her bikes new name on it(Black Betty)and then around the corner to home and blob out

I'll write up about it later. Pissing down from Fox to Haast and then still wet until Wanaka. Dried out in Wanaka and rode thorugh to Oamaru via Waimate (Yes I did visit Bootsy HR, it was good to see him and the Guzzi in bits). Onto Oamaru for a hot shower, roast lamb and a good catch up with some dear friends. PM and we can sus out a meeting day/time. Until I get to Dunedin I won't know which day we're heading down and it will just be a day trip.
The bike is going so well. Cruising along very nicely at 120 some parts (oh the speed!!!). Most annoying thing that happened yesterday was getting stuck behind some ignorant wanker in an older model Subaru crusing up the Lindis Pass at 70!!! He wouldn't pull over at all. Grrrrrrrrrr.
Beautiful, gorgeous, lovely & stunning...breath taking actually. It was so amazing noticing the contrast in terrain & vegetation from The Haast Pass through to the Lindis Pass. I had a smile on my face for a lot of the way yesterday as I recalled years earlier (before I ever owned a bike) thinking how awesome it would be to zoom along the Lindis Pass on a motorbike! And now I have! Wow!!
I noticed by the end of yesterday I really needed spme compnay b/c I had started tooting at the cows & bulls as I rode passed to keep myself amused. Tee hee!!!

Today my sister (Lulu) and I rode down to meet Scum Dog (HAPPY BIRTHDAY! ) - we were not dissapointed! Hospitality & friendliness abounded from SD & his wife Chrissie Bimbo (thanks!), also met Jantar.
Once we had sat around talking shite having bickies and coffee we decided to head down to Kaka Point for lunch. It was pretty windy and but a great place for lunch and more talking of shite.
Then we headed back to Balclutha and said goodbye to SD & CB, Jantar and I headed to...Beaumont (??) and Lulu headed home. Lulu hadn't been out riding for a bout 3 months so the ride to Balclutha was enough for her and the XR250.

Yes you read it right peeps. Betty & I did 3541kms from the my house back to my house. So that works out at 208.30 kms a day but if you take off the days I didn't ride at all...which was 3, it equals 252.92kms a day.
Now I am having some semi-decent coffee and cuddling my pussy. Will post pics later (no not of my pussy, you've already seen it, of my trip) if they worked out.
The only road I didn't get to ride was Queen Charlotte Drv b/c
(a) The weather turned decidedly dodgey just as I arrived on Blenhiem
and
(b) My mate noticed my headlight bulbs had both blown and we had to drive back to Blenhiem to get the big one, which took up most of what could have been riding time.
Oh, I also had the very pleasant company of F5_Dave and his CYT on the Ferry crossing home. :2thumbsup

Welcome back CSL - we've missed you - thank goodness you did regular updates to make us all extremely jealous. I think I'll do the south island this time next year.
You haven't missed much on the site - it's all been bollocks really, especially all my postings. But I will be in Welly tomorrow to get my new bike and catch up with any Wellingtonions who can come out tomorrow night! :wari:  Maybe see you there!

You should be allowed to drive fast and safely. No you shouldn't. Yes you should...
The Scottish Thread approaches its 3,000th post.
There are currently options for KB Thursday evening rides in Wellington.
Ramius is recovering in Gisborne after damaging himself and his ride after one such Wellington ride.
The "sin bin" has been used to good effect. A "big ups" to our moderators.
This action has mitigated greatly ravings of anger and hatred against Police, particularly those who enforce traffic laws
Quasi has organised the next KB rally for ANZAC weekend. Be there or be somewhere else...
Jrandom has, gulp, got a mountain bike
The summer racing season is in full swing
The taxman pursueth White trash
CSL has been swanning around the South Island on her 250
Cage drivers are pricks and should be banned
Summer is terrific and should be extended
Riff Raff has a new bike, probably powered by bottie coughs...
Blakamin stands like a Colossus as the site's most numerous poster but has relinquished his standing as the most frequent
A brief flirtation with doggerel/rap has abated
There's probably more that I have forgotten...

Wow, can you do this on a daily basis for all of us so we can spend more time riding, and less time sifting through all the claptrap that is spewed forth (I include my own demented ramblings under the 'claptrap' banner). Thanks.

Sounds like you had a great trip - pitty about the weather, When we were down there in Jan it was fabulous weather. Queen Charlotte Drive was real nice - lots of windy corners and nice view of the sounds etc., oh well next time.
