View Full Version : WANTED: Company name ideas

Sanx
25th June 2008, 14:10
I'm looking for ideas for the name of a company. The company will be for me to sell my services as an IT consultant.

What I'm looking for must be:

Relatively generic and not too obviously geek-related
Available to use in Australia
Have an associated .com.au URL available
Not have any unfortunate connotations (like this one (http://www.penisland.net))

I'll handle the availability checks and the final decision is mine. However, the person whose suggestion I like best will receive green bling, eternal fame (maybe) and either $50 cash or a $100 Quasimoto (http://www.quasimoto.co.nz/) voucher, which could get you a back protector, a pair of gloves or go towards a the finest custom-made leathers in New Zealand.

So - suggest away guys and girls!

I don't want the name to be IT-related, necessarily. The company may end up providing more than just IT services.

And the sanx name is a possibility, but given that I've used it everywhere for the last ten years, I know it's too open to mis-pronunciation and mis-spelling.

Microsoft did a big promotion here recently handing out 100's of shirts advertising what a veek is (A geek proudly working toward total virtual nirvana or somesuch).

Might be fun to piggyback on the MS advertising dolar for a change...

So basically, you're saying, "Sanx, but no Sanx."

What kind of IT consulting do you do?

Are you a PC Geeky guy, or a Enterprise systems consultant - You need a name that will be acceptable to your audience.

Just don't put specialist in the domain name, email signature...some spam filters see "cialis" in the content and reject it.

The .au domain registrar requires you to offer evidence that you have the right to use a .com.au domain name.

Basically this means that you have to register an Australian company if you want a .com.au domain.

You want something that describes something visible. I am a proponent of the theory that "Red Hat" is the finest company name ever. It's something you can visualise and therefore remember really quickly; It lends itself to an equally memorable logo; and it doesn't commit the company to doing actually anything at all.

Also witness "Apple Computer" becoming just "Apple" a year or so ago.

This sort of naming process could go on forever. The best name have nothing to do with the product. ie:
Sun
Apple
Dell
Disney
all don't mean anything in relationship to their product but are now synonymous with their products.

Yes but it has taken a shit load of cash to do it. Best names are incoperated into the the logo and are usully one word. Fedex and Kodak are two that spring to mind..........even Coca Cola as dropped the cola for marketing purposes and changed the spelling to boot.

Fixit's not a bad name but unfortunately not very descriptive of what I do. I'm a Systems Architect, so I design and implement new stuff rather than patching up existing systems.

I think I have a name, actually. I've decided to resurrect a business name my father used 15 years ago in the UK. I'm not going to mention the name as the registration process isn't complete yet, but it fulfills all my criteria and it's a name I'm both familiar with and comfortable with.

But thanks for all the suggestions; it's really appreciated.

My mind interpreted the information in your posts in the suggested manner below.

You want to go beyond the known world based on your current IT beginnings.

Beyond the end of the known technical world, not restricted to IT

Company name. BEYOND OMEGA-IT [www.beyondomega-it.com.au] ( beyondomega-it@xtra?.com.au )

For what it's worth, it's easy to forget if you think it's crap. Cheers John.

Awww well looks like your sorted, missed the thread earlier, sorry it took me so long to get aroundtoIT

If anyone's interested, the name I chose is Mason Frost. Yep - sounds like a bunch of lawyers or accountants. But, as I said, it's a name my dad used for many years for his business (technical and user documentation).

Advantages for me:

The company name's available in Aus. Well, was available. I've got it now.
The .com domain name, likewise, was available before I snapped it, and the .net, .org and .info up with it.
It's not IT-specific; my other half might also use it to bill through when / if she gets the translation work she's looking for over here.

Thanks for all the suggestions though. I'll still pick a winner regardless...
