Wellington City Council have just released a set of new Traffic Resolutions for consideration, which includes several new motorcycle parking areas. It adds up to a total of 54 metres.

WCC Traffic resolutions. (http://www.wellington.govt.nz/haveyoursay/publicinput/2008-06-traffic.html)

"Information:
Council has received numerous requests to increase the availability of motorcycle parking in the CBD. Currently demand for on street motorcycle parking space exceeds supply. Officers consider that, with rising fuel costs, increasing numbers of commuters are turning to scooters or motorcycles as a cheaper transport option. From a demand perspective, it is likely that an increase in use of scooters and motorbikes will reduce the numbers of cars commuting to work in the CBD, which will in turn reduce car congestion and demand for on street car park space."

"Information:
The demand for motorcycle parking in the city is growing rapidly, mainly as a result of fuel price rises. An assessment of parking within the CBD is being undertaken and it has been found that small motorcycles stands can be shoehorned into existing parking arrangements without significantly compromising existing arrangements."

Proposed new parking areas include:

Cable St (opposite Te Papa) - two new sections of parking.
Victoria St (opposite Central Library, at the Mercer St intersection)
Wakefield St (near the pedestrian crossing opposite the City Council, near the Lido Cafe)
Wakefield St (near the intersection with Tory St)
Jessie St
Tennyson St
Marion St

There must be snowball fights in hell today.

Who do I email to say "shit yes, go for it"?

Superb!
With roughly 2 bikes per metre (yeah, I know that rarely happens), that creates a few happy commuters.

Please Sir! Can we have some more?

Well done WCC. Hope they keep them free.

Well I can tell you (based on inside info) that the free parking isn't permanent as of yet, just shelved for now.

I got asked my opinion on where some of the most congested bike parks and where the best locations for new ones would be so hope my 2c helped :)

Without being negative, there seems to be an emphasis on parks at the south end of the city. Is that in response to the parking requirements needed there or some other reason?

Nice,
(although I still park at work undercover)

I walk past the Victoria park (outside farmers) from time to time. It seems to have been taken over by scooters :)
Once upon a time there were some nice bikes in there.

More parking is great, and keeping it free as long as possible is even better.

Park mine on Lambton Quay, near old Dog & Bone. Once the new pavement work is complete, will be interesting to see if the same amount of parking spaces will be there.

If they raise the idea of charging again, then more emails will be sent.

So is it happening?

Well, yes it is happening, unless there's a flood of enraged cage drivers making submissions that there shouldn't be more motorcycle parks...

Just to bring up an old thread,...there is a new motorcycle park opposite the library on Victoria Street for us to use, no time restriction or levy.

First of many to come :)

Does anyone else who uses the Victoria St parking (opposite the library, on intersection with Mercer St) have problems with delivery trucks and couriers CONSTANTLY blocking it?

Delivery trucks and couriers constantly park in the chevron area in front of the bike parking, especially first thing in the morning. This means that bikes are forced to ride on the pavement in order to roll off in to a parking slot. Alternatively they have to wait, which can be 15 minutes or more in some cases (I've had to wait 15 minutes myself).

I've emailed WCC via their Website to ask whether this delivery parking is permitted and they responded by saying they would inform parking officers to be on the lookout. However, this was a month or so ago, and nothing has changed :-(

While I haven't experienced the problem myself, I have seen it while walking past in that area. I hope that the rider I saw suiting up on one occassion didn't have to wait too long!
