I think personally they could have put a decent King/Queen sized Corbin seat on the thing. Instead of the dumb things they have on it now. After all said and done it's a Retro bike "not a Sports bike whereas you are hanging over the tank. Anyway it's a start and a vast improvement for Harley, 10/10 for effort

THE MCN WRITE UP
The XR1200 is styled on the flat-track Harley Davidson XR750, which is the most successful racing motorcycle ever built.

The XR1200 features Dunlop tyres, Showa suspension and Nissin brakes and is priced at £7,655.

Harley-Davidson and Buell UK Marketing Manager Greg Willis said: “This is a very exciting time for us,”

“The XR1200 is a completely new direction for the Motor Company, but based on the racing success of the bike’s predecessor – the XR750 – we are expecting a lot of interest in the motorcycle.

"It’s also a great opportunity to welcome new owners and sports bike riders looking for something more unique into the Harley-Davidson brand.” at long last.

They have been making excellent sports bikes since they acquired Buell.

Love the XR1200 concept. From the photos (that have been around for 12 months), I'm not blown away by the execution, be interesting to see it in the flesh.

ROFL oh god no! Not that hideous thing...

Have to agree with young David here -- the production model seems very toned down compared with the concept bikes that were trotted out. This has a lot less XR and a lot more Sportster than one would expect.

Um, from the doco I saw last week on the making of the Vrod - they had been making sports bikes for racing for a LONG time.

As far as dedicated Harley trolls are concerned you can't hold a candle to Huck Farley in his prime.

personally I don't like it

when they had a ZR750 for inspiration

when over 20 years ago they could produce the XR1000

and then they produce this, have seen it in the flesh and parked alongside an XR750 it just does not measure up

MCN might rave about it, they raved about the V rod but the real measure will be in the market place

McJim
28th June 2008, 18:38
I think the looks are unremarkable personally. However I do think the V rod is very sexy but I can't afford one of them.

Why do you think they call the Sportster the Sportster? Whats an XR750? Harley have been making sport bikes for a very long time

XR750 is the most successful race bike ever - mind you when most of the bikes in that class are XR750's that is no surprise

Firstly, regardless of what Harley or Eric Buell say, it's far from a "Sports" bike. The handle bars are just a little high and wide and even if they're the best fucken brakes ever fitted to a Harley, the weight, suspension level and geometry dictates that they simply wont work very well and possibly lock the front all too easily. The chrome pipes need to go in the rubish in favour of some yummy true upswept Super Trapps.

All that being said, I might just head off to see Kerry Jeffs at KTL Motorcycles......

I've always said that if I was ever to buy a Harley Davidson it would have to be an XR750 replica.

I still stand by my comments. The bank balance and wife disagree with me of course.

See I'm in the enviable position of having a missus that's (possibly) more into bikes than I am. It's ME that's the voice of reason in our house.

I think WE need one of those babe........

Fuck off, I'd have a "Cross bones" if I was going to have a Harley outfit.

I was talking with Steve Bron last weekend at Manfeild and he was actually in the proccess of building a road going race style outfit. Now THAT would be a hoot. They tested one in PB about ten years ago and it looked fucken cool.

Regardless of what WT says, Buell makes a great sports bike.
Harley even did a pretty good one in the FXDX.

What WT means is in fact a track bike these days.:wari:

Buell do indeed make superb Sports bikes mates. I'm looking very forward to slinging a leg over the new water cooled critter when you do a story on it :D

What I'm saying, is regardless of who sez wot, the XR1200 is nowhere friggen NEAR a sportsbike.

Whats really interesting about it is that it will not be for sale in the USA - its designed for the European market.

HD probably still remember the big flop of their last XR replica in the early 80's (I think). The funny thing about that is they are now worth huge dollars as they are very rare.

You're not thinking of the XLCR are ya? Rather than an XR. XRs were never a flop but the XLCRfailed miserably.

And if that is the machine you're thinking of, they're actually not very valuable at all. Check Ebay.

I'm a sick cunt, I know, but I still lust after an XLCR1000. Bloody beautifull.

I was 19.
I had a brand spankin new black and gold SR500 with a bikini fairing and drop bars because it was as close as I could afford to a XLCR.
I read that brochure more than any other. I'd still have it in a box somewhere.

Everything with an AMF badge on it flopped.

I'd still pick the Harley Buell motor over the rotax buell motor.
What is better sport these days - flogging a low/mid power unit - or idling 5k off the powerband on a fire breather - huh? huh?

The fairing on mine was closer in size to the XLCR, but that was the deal.
Traded it on a XS1100.

HA HA WHAT!! You could have fooled me. Get real dude. A Suzuki GSXR1000R and a Yamaha R6 are two REAL sports bike that come to mind. With respect: Certainly not a HD.. Both the bikes above would blow your HD away. To suggest that HD have been making true sports bikes is truly in your mind. (nobody else's)
